Holy Deja Vu Batman! I kid you guys not I swear Ocean just end up porting over the version of Donkey Kong they made for the ZX Spectrum because both versions are almost identical from how DK and Mario look, the stick figure at the top of the level, how the first level is set up, even down to the title screen the only major differences are in the speed as this version moves faster and the colours as the Speccy had a very limited colour palette
@Evilmonkey66699 No way, Mario looks much better in this MSX port and a lot different from the white ZX Spectrum Mario. Also the sprites are moving different on the MSX. Check the ZX Spectrum version again. But the rest is indeed almost the same (crap).
It would have made a lot more sense to buy the rights to Coleco's version, and make the small changes to port from the Colecovision to the MSX. Those systems practically have the same hardware.
I'm surprised at how bad this MSX version is compared to the ColecoVision/Coleco Adam versions, considering that they're basically all the same machine hardware-wise....
I just now noticed that Mario actually seems to climb a bit faster in this port compared to the MSX. This port is a little more enjoyable as a result. Not much more, though.
@Luigi84289 Ocean's C64 & Amstrad ports were nearly perfect except for the graphics having to be scaled down. The C64 one is superior to it's counterpart though.
It's interesting to see how different ports of games compare. I'm surprised Nintendo licensed this version in 1986! Did this come out a bit before the NES came out in Europe?
This game is '86. The NES came out in 1985. The NES port of this game was October 15, 1986 for Europe, according to Wikipedia.
I cannot find an exact date of release of the MSX port, but I think it is save to assume the MSX and NES ports were developed and released at the same time, for the same market. Both the MSX and the NES had their largest user base in Japan (at that time).
@oldskoolgamertje The japanese NES (Famicom) came out in 1983 along with Donkey Kong at launch in japan. It was quite old when it arrived for the rest of the world.
@oldskoolgamertje if you want to be more specific, the NES port itself was actually created back in '83 for the Nintendo Famicom. so it's a tad older at least in Japan.
How high can you get? Extremely high apparently. That screen scared the hell out of me.

Is the MSX capable of multi-coloured sprites? The jumpman character looks like he 2+ colours, so why not the barrels, etc?

C64 port is way better.

It's a horrible port.
An MSX clone / rip-off of this game called "Apeman Strikes Again" was even better than this one.

man the sound chip is worst than the standerd atari 2600 sound chip at least that isn't distorted

It's not due to the soundchip itself but to sloppy programming.

Ninendo let OCEAN port this game? BAD move.

This and the Spectrum port are actually pretty bad. You should see their port to the C64 and Amstrad. THOSE are excellent.

@Luigi84289
Ocean only assumed home computer rights, not console rights which were by Nintendo itself, of course.

The Spectrum version shows Mario as the "invisible man." That's one of the differences between that and this MSX2 version.
