I hve a question maybe you can help me with..I have been playing fingerstyle for about 10 years..doing mostly covers when playing out. Just in the past 3 months it is as if my fingers have began to pull up towards my palm when I play instead of falling back down. I have tried to relax but songs that I had under my finger perfectly I know struggle with..have you ever heard of this. I did play mostly strumming songs for a few months, could my finger have forgotten how to finger pick?

@lerlo I would say most fingerstyle players read tab and most fingersyle music is written in tab format. To be completely honest with you I read whatever I can find to play a song lol. So really as it is on a guitar you can find both tab and musical notation :)

Fingerstyle takes years ..i've started off with classical gas years ago , then made my own versions ..and i don't know how it happened , but over time i learned how to do it on my own ..guess a dvd would have helped me alot though .

I still am not that great like most of the players in this style, but i do have my moments :-)

Nothing more fun when friends come over asking me to play , because they love the sound and songs i've writen myself etc . This style is pure guitar-heaven in my ears !

Isnt this very similar to classical guitar? Just u are playing on a steel string?

@lerlo there are some slight differences

for example classical guitarists are rarely seen wearing thumb-picks (slight change in tone)

also the techniques used are different i.e fingerstyle guitar has a lot of percussives (hitting guitar body like a drum or slapping strings) and classical guitar normally just has straight playing (obviously with a few exceptions)

I have a question, is this DVD recommended for beginners? I really know little about guitar playing and I think he is great, but I dont want to buy something that will be of no use to me now. One more question. I got an acoustic guitar and found out that the string tension is much much higher than my classical one.... What string do you recommend for fingerstyle guitar? Is it going to be safe to buy extra light strings? These high tension strings seems like cut my fingers......

Mr. Haselhoff, I have a classical guitar but have played a few finger style songs. I still like the nylon string sound better but finger style has been my favorite... Do you think it is still okay to watch your dvd and learn with my classical guitar? BTW, nice playing.. very impressive technique. :)

@sociojeje - Fingerstyle can be played on any guitar. Famous players like Chet Atkins and Marc Casstevens have recorded fingerstyle performances on nylon strung guitars that have become classics!

Congratulations for the technique, but I don't agree with the Classical "example". It's not Classical music! Classical music is not called that way only because it's played on an acoustic guitar; similarly, a pop song played with a string quartet remains a pop song. It would be interesting to see if it's possible to play _correctly_ the Asturias by Albeniz, Paganini's Capriccio 24, Villa Lobos's Etude 2 or Berio's Sequenza XI using fingerstyle: maybe I'm wrong, but I think it'd be quite hard :)

@mailbox369 Eltjo sees classical guitar techniques as a subset of fingerstyle. That does not mean that classical guitar is easy, of course, but Eltjo has little problems playing the music you mentioned, maybe not "correctly" in the eyes of some, but most pleasingly in the ears of many.

@mailbox369 Classical technique is directly related to "fingerstyle" they are actually very close to the same. The biggest difference is how the guitar is held and tempo. both use the thumb for the base line and the first three fingers for melody. Your examples of etude 2, capriccio 24 and asturias are indeed finger style. try playing any of them with a pick and you will see that only fingerstyle can perform them on a solo guitar.
