JUST MISSED!!! "Don't Play That Song (You Lied)" just missed making the Billboard's Hot Top 10 chart; it peaked at No. 11 and spent a total of 12 weeks in the Hot Top 100 in 1962. Eight years later in 1970 Aretha Franklin charted with this song, and son-of-gun, she missed making the Top 10, her's also peaked at No. 11!!!
I love this song, 'Stand By Me' is mine and my fiances song so this is a great song if something (Pray to God it Doesnt) shud ever happen to me nd the love of my life
Yo sabía que existìa esta versión fue la primera vez que la oí y hasta ahora la encontrè que bueno, me encanta, yo era una niña cuando la escuche por primera vez y la he buscado desde entoncés, gracias .
I've always liked this. I think it sounds better thinking THE DRIFTERS, cus this has so much of their sound (post-There Goes My Baby), and of course Ben was the lead then.
Out of all the music I have heard, I did not remember this one, even though I must have heard it. I only remember the Aretha Franklin remake of later years. I love Aretha's version, and am now a fan of this one too!! Research I have done on Lieber and Stoller among others points how they were some of the first producers to use strings and sweetening on R&B (the newly names Race music). It's great to hear how the music form was developing and becoming SOUL music!!!
THIS IS THE SONG WHICH MADE ME FAMOUS AS A CHILD; BACK HOME IN MY COUNTRY; WHEN I SANG IT AT 12 YEARS OLD AT THE GLOBE, ASTOR, AND HOLLYWOOD IN GUYANA SOUTH AMERICA. THX U BEN E KING FOR YOUR INSPIRATION. Qyneares.
@Orthodox72 I know it does sound like stand by me :p I beleive he did that on perpose, refering to stand by me as the song he doesnt want plaid. This is my guess
I remember this song from summer of 1962 and the girl who stole my heart. So happy to have lived at a time of some great music. Late 50's & early 60's
Ben E. King is timeless! Finally, after many years, I bought the CD, The Very Best of Ben E. King from that fabulous Music Store on Broadway, in the high 40's. There it was buried in the treasure vault of oldies but goodies. Now whenever I drive, Ben E. is with me. This song is the one that should be played in the movie of your life, towards the end, reminiscent of not only Stand by Me, but of all the great hits that emanated from the genius that was Ben E. King.
@richarichie2007 Can some people like songs which others don't???? My personal opinion it that I like the original but I like Aretha"s better..This sounds (to me) a re-hash of Stand By Me (I don't know which came first and don't feel like researching)...Oh,there are some covers that sound better than the original-rare as it may be.......now we can agree to disagree not taking anything away from Ben...he didn't get into the R&RHOF for nothing....
@MorphiusIsDead Written by the head of Atlantic Records, Ahmet Ertegun. And yes, it sounds an awful lot like the legendary Stand By Me. I think it's safe to say it was based on the theory of when you're hot, you're hot....so heck, let's do another one!!!!
Wow, what memories this is bringing back. I had the original 45 but it has gotten lost through the years.
I can't think of any modern songs that would have the staying power and emotional impact like this and many others from that era. Music and artists just are just not the same-the magic is missing.. This was a very special time that will probably never come again.
@cheeznizt same rhythm slight variation on the notes, a lot of musicians use this, they pump out as many songs as they can, lots of them good, but there are always gona be a few golden classics that are remembered best like stand by me, this is why there is a misconception that all modern music is rubbish, its cos its being compared to the classics from before only.
I have loved this song since I was a little kid. My Dad would sing it and play it...I miss my Dad, but these wonderful songs bring me back great memories of him. Thank heaven for MUSIC!!
Oh I love this song, it is real SOUL!!!! This is sung from the heart.....The lyrics are fantastic and the orchestration is mind blowing....thankyou for putting this on youtube, it has brought back great memories for me.
yeah this song was written first also the instrumentals if this song wasnt made there would be no stand by me and that song is a classic thats made its way into alot of hands but this is the original and the best so i have just that more apreciation for this song Soph.
@BearWindAppleyard go to wiki search 'stand by me' go to bullet point 2. 'Notable covers, remixes and samples' and right there you'll see "Ben E. King recorded a song that paraphrased it musically, "Don't Play That Song (You Lied)"
Thanks for sharing man...I love hearing these memories from folks, who miss these artists like we knew them peronally. They will never know how much these songs and the singers meant to us.
things jus t don't seem to last forever. i hadn't heard a song bewildered by james brown and i just heard and that song brought back good memories. long live 50' and 60"s.
