I hate that I will never see him live. He had faults as a person(we all do) but as an artist he was so amazing. (And he was sexy too, but I didn't think that till after I got into his stuff lol)
does anyone not know that Neil Young was a HUGE skynard fan.... He was an honorary pall bearer at Van Zants funeral... He wrote Powderfinger for them.. Listen to Drive by Truckers Southern Rock Opera... it lays it out for you.
Great Song! not a poke a skynyrd or the south...like someone else said he could have used anybody in that chours ......I even think i heard a Roll Tide in there somewhere...
He always took risks with his lyrics. Warren Zevon had so much guts....no wimpy modern "career" songwriter would touch a song like this even if they had the smarts to think it up.
i wouldnt say this is a jab at anything. its shows you the simplicity and sometimes tragedy of a southern family, and the pride the south has despite its troubles. in a way it has the same theme as sweet home alabama, except warren's lyrics are 10x better. thats just my take on it though.
Being from Alabama, I'm glad to have heard this. I had no idea Zevon weighed in on the Skynard/Neil Young thing, but more than a war of words, would anyone agree that this sounds a lot like Faulkner in song?
Yeah I wouldn't call this track an attack on Skynyrd per sé, more one on the typical Skynyrd fan. Kind of like an older cousin to Nirvana's "In Bloom"
@Poopsmith01 I think it was because Skynyrd wrote Sweet Home Alabama as an answer to Neil Young's Southern Man, then Warren did this song as an answer to Skynyrd's song :)
@MrDavearama I think it's more a jab than a tribute, considering lyrics like "Daddy's doing Sister Sally ", "There ain't much to country living Sweat, piss, jizz and blood", "Grandpa pissed his pants again He don't give a damn Brother Billy has both guns drawn He ain't been right since Vietnam" Awesome song though
@Poopsmith01 "Play that dead band's song". This was released very shortly after Ronnie van Zandt's death. Plus, the entire thing is just a hilarious assault on the south skynard was defending. "There ain't much to country living; sweat, piss, jizz and blood", "the cattle all have brucellosis" etc.
this song makes me love the fact kid rock spliced werewolves of london with sweet home alabama, and knowing the fact that kid rock knows absolutely fucking nothing about music.
I'm 63 years of age. I've seen a hell of a lot of concerts in my life including concerts by The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry and many others, but the greatest concert I ever experienced was Warren Zevon by himself in the mid 90's in Memphis, TN. What an absolutely awesome, inspiring, one of a kind musical genius! Gone way to soon but never to be forgotten!

@agricolaemontanae Re you comment "He also could have left out his addition about throwing himself against the wall at the Louvre museum - is incorrect.
This is a line he took from Warren's song "It ain't that pretty at all" - Another of his best IMHO. What a loss!
I wouldn't say Warren is better than Bruce . He may have had more heart but Bruce is one hell of a performer . I would love to have seen Bruce and Warren on stage together ............. it would have been magic !
@theblitz8 It depended on the track. Sometimes it was the guys from Fleetwood Mac, the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt did some backing vocals. Sometimes it was members of Jackson Browne's band. He had a lot of respect throughout the music industry, so he had a lot of different people working with him at one time or another. Amazing to listen to. His music was that good.
I am always floored when I see the performances. Something about that makes it seem like the studio space actually held him back from really getting his stuff out there. Stand In The Fire is an amazing album, one of his best just for the LIVE factor it adds to his performance.
This gives me goosebumps. People always say what a genius and great songwriter Zevon was, (which is true) But he also was one hell of a performer and had amazing stage presence.
@JustAintthatWay It might be tied with his playing on "Accidentally Like A Martyr" - both sound amazing. I think ALAM might win, to me, but both are exceptional, and luckily we don't have to choose. We can have all of them...thanks to Mr. Zevon, Mr. Lindley, and others.
This song has nothing to do with the South (at least not in particular). Go to rural NY State, or anywhere else people are poor. This comment has received too many negative votesshow
lilleeperr91 , with not much respect, tis you that missed the reading not too deeply in between the lines support for attitudes of the old south in "Sweet Home Alabama". If they were indeed the "good " musicians that you seem to think they are /were, they are still proponents of a morally bankrupt attitude which makes them not only unpleasant to listen too but in fact scares me that there are so many people that like them & either deliberately or inadvertantly support the message of that song.
I think you're way off on the DBT comment. Thought it was a great treatment of it, and if it makes people like me dig back into my Zevon stuff, it's done it's job.
SoulMedicine is right on the money, not surprisingly, jackson had to call Warren back from lots of places, spain included. Thats where Warren met the man who inspired 'Roland', awesome!
Wow, just read this whole comment thread. As a proud son of the south, something of a conservative, and a lifelong Zevon fan, I can say only this... The idea of politicizing Zevon's music, and his memory, makes me want to hop a plane to Paris, France, find the Louvre Museum, take a good running start, and hurl myself against a freakin' wall!
Or, name another song that references "Brucellosis". C'mon, try! BTW, is it just me, or does his "dance" beginning at 2:39 remind anyone else of Ashley Simpson's attempt to dance when she screwed up the lipsynch on SNL? How 'bout THAT for a Zevonesque attempt to connect the absurd? (BTW, I have become a huge fan, and this is probably my favorite song of his...reminds me of my hometown of Berrien Springs, Mi...where Ali lives as well.)
just read the book 'ill sleep when im dead', he grew up in cali after moving from the east when young. colorado happened when he followed his woman there, cause he wasnt being recieved well in LA. Jackson got him a deal and called him back to cali (if memory serves me right) this is before he knew Hunter S. imagine they're conversations!
I haven't read "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead" yet, I really need to pick it up. Somehow, though, I seem to remember WZ saying, in some old interview or something, that he was in Spain when Jackson called him back home. I could be totally wrong about that, though.
Clearly you are clueless, since if you actually read what i said it was in reply to a post by someone else, but hey you are so smart you dont need to have the facts right?
Children! Stop ranting! Just love the music, politicians know nothing, and feel nothing, they dont deserve the time spent arguing the toss here...God bless you Warren!! Thankyou!
Its called a slide. It produces a very smooth liquid tone. Very typical in blues & country. Some players prefer it made of stainless steel, others like the glass ones. The difference is in the tones it produces.
The four dislikes are from people who were the result of first cousins mating and breeding.

Zevon was a friend of Neil Young. He thought Lynyrd Skynyrd dissed Neil's 'Southern Man' when they wrote 'Sweet Home Alabama'.
They say:
Well I heard mister Young sing about her
Well, I heard ole Neil put her down
Well, I hope Neil Young will remember
A Southern man don't need him around anyhow
Zevon retaliated with 'Play it All Night Long' .

(BTW, I have become a huge fan, and this is probably my favorite song of his...reminds me of my hometown of Berrien Springs, Mi...where Ali lives as well.)

you are an asshole, sir.
how's that for some Zevonesque absurdity?

just read the book 'ill sleep when im dead', he grew up in cali after moving from the east when young. colorado happened when he followed his woman there, cause he wasnt being recieved well in LA.

Whats the metal thing on the Lead guitarists pinky finger?
basslord7188 2 years ago
It's just a peice of metal.
He produces that unique wailing sound by rubbing it against the strings.

Its called a slide. It produces a very smooth liquid tone. Very typical in blues & country. Some players prefer it made of stainless steel, others like the glass ones. The difference is in the tones it produces.
