  • The four dislikes are from people who were the result of first cousins mating and breeding.

  • where are the other musicians now? They are so killer here

  • I hate that I will never see him live. He had faults as a person(we all do) but as an artist he was so amazing. (And he was sexy too, but I didn't think that till after I got into his stuff lol)

  • does anyone not know that Neil Young was a HUGE skynard fan.... He was an honorary pall bearer at Van Zants funeral... He wrote Powderfinger for them.. Listen to Drive by Truckers Southern Rock Opera... it lays it out for you.

  • 4 southern rednecks don't like this.

  • Yeah, you just don't offend Warren and not expect a biting response ... genius always has the last word.

  • This song is 20 times better than anything Lynyrd Skynryd ever did ... ironic ain't it?

  • The Lead guitarist is great. He Sorta reminds me of Buckethead. :)

  • Wish i would have had a chance to see him live...As D. Chandler said it best, "I was born too late".

  • Zevon was a friend of Neil Young. He thought Lynyrd Skynyrd dissed Neil's 'Southern Man' when they wrote 'Sweet Home Alabama'.

    They say:

Well I heard mister Young sing about her

Well, I heard ole Neil put her down

Well, I hope Neil Young will remember

A Southern man don't need him around anyhow

Zevon retaliated with 'Play it All Night Long' .

  • @djingodjango makes sense i hope its true cause Neil's the shit, and Zevons the man word!

  • 4 people pissed their pants

  • Man, this is by far the best american folk music performer ever!

  • Saw him at the Stone Pony in the 80's. Excellent show.

  • wonderful slide guitar

  • Great Song! not a poke a skynyrd or the south...like someone else said he could have used anybody in that chours ......I even think i heard a Roll Tide in there somewhere...

    Bamaboy

  • He always took risks with his lyrics. Warren Zevon had so much guts....no wimpy modern "career" songwriter would touch a song like this even if they had the smarts to think it up.

  • I feel a bit conflicted. I like Skynyrd...but I also like this song.

  • @evilemperordude It's not a condemnation of Skynyrd....just painting a musical picture...imo....I like both artists as well...

  • I front the band 'Wicked Gentlemen', my guitarist sings this song. Love to play it when someone requests Skynyrd!

  • @mrnobodie1 . I do the same thing re: Skynyrd requests. Most Skynyrd fans don't appreciate it.

  • dat bass

  • who is on guitar solo with warren?

  • Does anyone know who the members of the band are? Specifically the mustachioed man.

  • @Poopsmith01 i am almost positive its the same guys who played with him on the live "Stand in the Fire" album, which came out a year or so earlier.

there is a Wikipedia page that lists the guys in the band

  • One of my all-time favorites from one of my all-time favorite songwriters/musician/performers. Warren was one of a kind. R.I.P.

  • Looks like we got four Lynyrd Skynyrd fans here!

  • @whiskeypriest1 spose "Skynyrd" would approve??

  • I believe at that time his guitarist was waddy wachtel, another well respected LA session man.

  • Does anyone know who Zevon's guitarist is? He is pretty freakin awesome. Check out the Live Excitable Boy too...

  • @matador483 guitarist is john wood, he's awesome on the guitar

  • Happy Birthday Warren.

  • i wouldnt say this is a jab at anything. its shows you the simplicity and sometimes tragedy of a southern family, and the pride the south has despite its troubles. in a way it has the same theme as sweet home alabama, except warren's lyrics are 10x better. thats just my take on it though.

  • Being from Alabama, I'm glad to have heard this. I had no idea Zevon weighed in on the Skynard/Neil Young thing, but more than a war of words, would anyone agree that this sounds a lot like Faulkner in song?

  • @speaktruthtopower I agree with the William Faulkner comparison. Warren Zevon was as powerful a storyteller as he was a singer and songwriter.

  • Yeah I wouldn't call this track an attack on Skynyrd per sé, more one on the typical Skynyrd fan. Kind of like an older cousin to Nirvana's "In Bloom"

  • So damn close to home.

  • Can someone explain how this is a jab at skynyrd? Im asking seriously I can't figure it out.

  • @Poopsmith01 I think it was because Skynyrd wrote Sweet Home Alabama as an answer to Neil Young's Southern Man, then Warren did this song as an answer to Skynyrd's song :)

  • It wasn't a jab at Lynrd Skynrd, probably in his way a tribute.

  • @MrDavearama I think it's more a jab than a tribute, considering lyrics like "Daddy's doing Sister Sally ", "There ain't much to country living Sweat, piss, jizz and blood", "Grandpa pissed his pants again He don't give a damn Brother Billy has both guns drawn He ain't been right since Vietnam" Awesome song though

  • @MrDavearama I think it's more a jab at Skynrd fans, than the band.

  • @Poopsmith01 "Play that dead band's song". This was released very shortly after Ronnie van Zandt's death. Plus, the entire thing is just a hilarious assault on the south skynard was defending. "There ain't much to country living; sweat, piss, jizz and blood", "the cattle all have brucellosis" etc.

  • @Poopsmith01 yea and also bcuz a good portion of skynard died in a plane crash

  • Warren was safe at second

  • The guitar sounds like Neil Young a little more of a jab at Skynyrd than just lyrics....

  • grandpa pissed his pants again, he don't give a damn. LMFAO!

  • this song makes me love the fact kid rock spliced werewolves of london with sweet home alabama, and knowing the fact that kid rock knows absolutely fucking nothing about music.

  • 3 people have brucellosis.

  • this shit is legendary

  • this is without a doubt the most amazing song ever i really enjoy it i just wish he was still alive he was truly before his time

  • @kamen41 without a doubt the most amazing song ever? I'm not sure bout that one.

  • chunky bass goddamnmuthafuckinshit.

  • and he shall be zevon

  • This is why I love Warren Zevon!

  • fucking awsome

  • anyone know if I can get this concert on dvd? bootleg maybe?

  • @culturalstudent Contact me at rwhite1@stx.rr.com about the concert DVD - BlancotronCC

  • Play it all night long, Warren

  • A shame his talent is not around anymore....RIP

  • anybody know when this concert is going to be released on dvd?

  • Hey, wasn't there a live performance of Werewolves from this concert? I can't find it.

  • I'm 63 years of age. I've seen a hell of a lot of concerts in my life including concerts by The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry and many others, but the greatest concert I ever experienced was Warren Zevon by himself in the mid 90's in Memphis, TN. What an absolutely awesome, inspiring, one of a kind musical genius! Gone way to soon but never to be forgotten!

  • @trockout never too old to find widespreadpanic!

  • Shit I had no idea this was a Zevon song! Very nice! Muy bueno! Maybe I need to dive into some more Warren?

  • @easywind1975 Yes, yes you do. As much Warren Zevon as possible.

  • This song is over too quickly.

  • Thank you!

  • warren (rip) absolute legend!

  • @2112murphy Yeah :), have you ever heard of the band Drive-By Truckers? If not you should totally check them out

  • I'm going down to the dew drop inn

to see if I can drink enough

there aint much to country living

sweat, piss, jizz and blood !! true and poingnant, great song!

  • We're so lucky to have this video - great quality. Nice job and thanks for posting! Warren is missed.

  • warren is the man, he was better than bruce he just had more demons and they held him back... anyway check out my remix of this above on a dope piano version of the song

  • brilliant! thanks!

  • Warren Zevon is undoubtedly a class songwriter and performer.........but better than Bruce?? I can't have that, aside of all the usual awesome 3 hour live shows, check him out in 1975 at the Hammersmith Odeon. raw as it gets!!!!

  • drive by trucker version is better.... Maybe its just the 'd' tuning...

  • @ThelynxAZ

I love DBT, and I love the heavy riffs they use in this song, but after I discovered this original version by Zevon, I was very disappointed at how Patterson Hood slaughtered the lyrics. He should have kept with "Brother Billy has both guns drawn" rather that changing it to "Uncle John is acting strange." He also could have left out his addition about throwing himself against the wall at the Louvre museum...

  • @agricolaemontanae

The DBT version also includes part of the Zevon song, "Ain't that pretty at all",

  • @MNGS717

I spoke out of ignorance of this song. Thanks for enlightening me.

  • @agricolaemontanae Re you comment "He also could have left out his addition about throwing himself against the wall at the Louvre museum - is incorrect.

This is a line he took from Warren's song "It ain't that pretty at all" - Another of his best IMHO. What a loss!

  • the guy on lead guitar looks and plays like Eddy Shaver.

  • this song is sooooo fucking awesome. really makes my heart want to explode.

  • Nice to see Warren enjoying himself

  • God i fucking love warren

  • "There ain't much to country livin': sweat, piss, jizz, and blood."

    Truer words were never written.

  • Genius...the last interview with letterman was incredible as well...and I agree...2 minutes in is perfect

  • I wouldn't say Warren is better than Bruce . He may have had more heart but Bruce is one hell of a performer . I would love to have seen Bruce and Warren on stage together ............. it would have been magic !

  • Why draw the comparison, banana, aren't they both great. Steak or lobster? Fuck it, gimme both.

  • Warren was genius.

  • Anyone know the names/bands of the rest of the band?

  • @theblitz8 It depended on the track. Sometimes it was the guys from Fleetwood Mac, the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt did some backing vocals. Sometimes it was members of Jackson Browne's band. He had a lot of respect throughout the music industry, so he had a lot of different people working with him at one time or another. Amazing to listen to. His music was that good.

  • @336kgf I agree I was wondering who the guys in this particular concert are, because in they're seen in the other live videos.

  • everyone is better than Springsteen...overated hack.....backed by a great band

  • warren zevon kicks bruce springsteens sold out soul any day of the week.

  • yes

  • This has got to be my favorite Zevon song. Not quite as magical as Lindley but a great performance.

  • I am always floored when I see the performances. Something about that makes it seem like the studio space actually held him back from really getting his stuff out there. Stand In The Fire is an amazing album, one of his best just for the LIVE factor it adds to his performance.

  • This gives me goosebumps. People always say what a genius and great songwriter Zevon was, (which is true) But he also was one hell of a performer and had amazing stage presence.

  • why is the audience just sitting there. F those chairs man, i woulda been rocking out if i was there.

  • great lindleys is too - very fun to cover

  • I just love the humor in his songs

  • play that deadman song

  • @derbykid33

    It's "dead Band's song"

  • my bad lol i should probably look up a lyric sheet b4 i post lyrics

  • i like this live version better than the studio version

  • great take no doubt

but disagree if you dont mind

b/c lindley's end solo on the studio

cut is probably the most beautiful

    musical part ive ever heard

this guy' s slide good tho it is

aint in even the same universe as what

    lindley laid down

(and i think even this guitarist might agree too)

    peace

  • @JustAintthatWay

    Definitely agree about Lindley's solo.

  • @JustAintthatWay It might be tied with his playing on "Accidentally Like A Martyr" - both sound amazing. I think ALAM might win, to me, but both are exceptional, and luckily we don't have to choose. We can have all of them...thanks to Mr. Zevon, Mr. Lindley, and others.

  • Just plain erotic! Warren was the best!

  • Comment removed

  • love it, W.Z is the best!

  • This song has nothing to do with the South (at least not in particular). Go to rural NY State, or anywhere else people are poor. I think it's about how people undermine themselves (i.e. get wasted and crank your favorite tunes to escape your shitty situation, instead of trying to change it). He could've used any Zeppelin or Pink Floyd song. I think he picked Skynyrd because it's a good (if tragic) story. He was into dark humor like that. Pronouncing judgement wasn't his style.

  • well thought and said

im a skynyrd guy (well was in another life anyway)

never took offense at all to this great composition

believe or not i always thought of it as a love song

  • genius. lol @ 2:00 : )

  • apparently, Warren never took shit for this like Niel Young did. apparently, folks told him that he said it like it was.

  • uaooooooo!!!!!!!

  • Somebody needed to say what this song says. It is natural that Warren would say it best. I've always felt offended at Skynard's heavy handed poke at Mr. Young. Neil was making a statement about a shameful past history. For Skynard to defend that can only mean they hold on to the creed of the old south & support racism & segregation . Warren is observing how bad things are for the family in this song. But the empty hope lies in blasting Skynard's anthem of pride for the old south. RIP Mr. Zevon

  • @retrogradevids1 with all do respect, i think you misunderstood the meaning of sweet home alabama along with many other people, if you listen close enough and keep your ears open for sarcasm, skynyrd is not proud of the shameful past, and if you research some lyrics from other songs there also for gun control, they have or had a homosexual guitarist etc. they are not typical southern rednecks as some believe, however they are dam good musicians

  • Pretentious bollocks

  • Idiotic sound byte

  • You are the sort of person Zevon would have written a song about - maybe he did "In walks the village idiot and his face is all aglow...`

  • bellysmyre49 , U r an ostrich w/ ur head stuck in the sand .

  • Well at least it's not stuck up my arse like yours, you pompous prick with your nonsensical pseudo intellectual interpretations of songs.

  • It's only nonsense to those with no sense.

  • ..best zevon song ever!!!!.....on a par with joe strummer.....what a jam they must be having up above!!!!!......

  • è il mio cantante preferito e lo resterà per sempre

  • I think you're way off on the DBT comment. Thought it was a great treatment of it, and if it makes people like me dig back into my Zevon stuff, it's done it's job.

  • grandpa pissed his pants again, he dont give a damn

  • My favorite Warren Zevon song. Reminds me of The Band!

  • he wouldnt like that comment

  • There ain't much too country living sweat, piss, jizz and blood!

  • Drive By Truckers did a cover version of this that rules too. Just to say.

  • No blanket knock on DBT, but their version isn't a starting pimple on WZ's corpse's ass. They tarnished something classic.

  • what a f ..king legend

  • There aint' much to country livin' ...play it all night long - yea!

  • R.I.p. Warren,we still enjoyed now and forever.

  • what a legend he is.

  • Man, this must have been a kick ass concert.

  • SoulMedicine is right on the money, not surprisingly, jackson had to call Warren back from lots of places, spain included. Thats where Warren met the man who inspired 'Roland', awesome!

  • This just got to be the best example of great american music! Fuck Springsteen!

  • Zevon is indeed close to my heart but you sir have crossed the uncrossable line.

  • I have to agree zevon is better than springsteen

  • @eatbananaforlunch Zevon is Shakespeare. Springsteen is Dean Koontz.

  • @sonicdeath10 Um sorry, I have no idea who Dean Koontz is lol

  • @sonicdeath10 They're both great. Don't downplay either of them.

  • @RansomII I understand that Springstein is good he just doesn't appeal to me.

  • Comment removed

  • do drop in at the dewdrop in lol. Great song I just covered it. Sorry about the Spam. Well not really

  • Nice Tori reference

  • SHUT THE FUCK UP ALL OF YOU relax and listen to the work of an artist (Rest in peace zevon)

  • You too dude. Peace :-)

  • Wow, just read this whole comment thread. As a proud son of the south, something of a conservative, and a lifelong Zevon fan, I can say only this... The idea of politicizing Zevon's music, and his memory, makes me want to hop a plane to Paris, France, find the Louvre Museum, take a good running start, and hurl myself against a freakin' wall!

  • It just ain't that pretty at all!

  • Well played sir, well played...

  • Or, name another song that references "Brucellosis". C'mon, try! BTW, is it just me, or does his "dance" beginning at 2:39 remind anyone else of Ashley Simpson's attempt to dance when she screwed up the lipsynch on SNL? How 'bout THAT for a Zevonesque attempt to connect the absurd? (BTW, I have become a huge fan, and this is probably my favorite song of his...reminds me of my hometown of Berrien Springs, Mi...where Ali lives as well.)

  • you are an asshole, sir.

how's that for some Zevonesque absurdity?

  • just read the book 'ill sleep when im dead', he grew up in cali after moving from the east when young. colorado happened when he followed his woman there, cause he wasnt being recieved well in LA. Jackson got him a deal and called him back to cali (if memory serves me right) this is before he knew Hunter S. imagine they're conversations!

  • I haven't read "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead" yet, I really need to pick it up. Somehow, though, I seem to remember WZ saying, in some old interview or something, that he was in Spain when Jackson called him back home. I could be totally wrong about that, though.

  • In his own words....play that dead band's song!! We love you, Warren!!

  • seriousley what song starts of with grandpa pissed his pants again? Zevon's the fuckin man

  • fuckin epic performance

  • wheres zevon from?

  • Colorado, I think.

  • cali since he was a kid. he just visited CO a lot because he was friends with hunter s thompson

  • Clearly you are clueless, since if you actually read what i said it was in reply to a post by someone else, but hey you are so smart you dont need to have the facts right?

  • guitar are you bigs boyfriend or is that the level of debate you really have?

  • fuck the politics already!!!,

get our boys back from over there...

they want to play war, let em' kill those

    mutha F'n somalia pirates!!!

    who's with me?

    RU

  • Children! Stop ranting! Just love the music, politicians know nothing, and feel nothing, they dont deserve the time spent arguing the toss here...God bless you Warren!! Thankyou!

    Jack. U.K

  • What a great live version

  • Great Song, A True inspiration to all !

  • The resemblance to Alton Brown is disturbing...

  • Warren zevon music tells tales of the heart. We all can relate in our own way.

    Just listen

  • Whats the metal thing on the Lead guitarists pinky finger?

  • It's just a peice of metal.

He produces that unique wailing sound by rubbing it against the strings.

  • Its called a slide. It produces a very smooth liquid tone. Very typical in blues & country. Some players prefer it made of stainless steel, others like the glass ones. The difference is in the tones it produces.
