Dassault Mirage IVA, A for Atomic, was a strategic bomber designed for carrying a 90 kt (boosted?) fission bomb as an semi-external. The range of the aircraft was insuffisant to return to its base. The pilot must eject in enemy country.
Well, depends on which enemy you attack. Anyway, I think it was able to do inflight refuelling. Anyway, it was able to engage enemies within a radius of 3500 km. If a Miarge 2000 took of from Orange Air Base, he could have wiped out Moskau, (in fact, 500 kilometers after Moskau), every african state directly under the Sahara, or Iceland and return to its base. But he couldn't attack the USA (1000km too far, but they were no enemies right?)
Hmm. The starfighter was an interceptor, this is a strategic bomber. If I had to find an equivalence it would be more like the B-58 Hustler or the B-1B Lancer (but with a lower payload than the Lancer)
@RemoRa2826 LOL. The Mirage IV was designed in the 50's for strategic bombing. When the french finally mastered long-range and intercontinental missiles, the remaining Mirage IV's were converted for high-speed, high- alititude reconnaissance missions. Today, reco missions are performed by UAV's and satellites and this cool bird has been decomissioned.

@F22DarkRaptor I didnt compare anything. I only said that the Berkut is still the best Jet. In my opinion it doenst exist a better plane. Best flight characteristic ever!
@HELERsx Yep if we forget secret airplane the SU-47 are the best but not yet in combat and only a prototypel i hope, if the russian made a aircraft from this prototyte that it will be a nice aircraft =)
@dertyKurty The delta wing configuration has high wing loading. without rocket assist and while heavily loaded, it'll need miles of runway to take off which mean's it'll not be able to operate from small airbases. US and Russia supersonic bombers (B1 and TU-160) all has variable wing configuration to solve this problem.
I remember being on holiday in Southern France, in a farmhouse in a place called Castlejaloux where Mirages flew overhead - night and day!! It was in a valley where the house was and no traffic noise and the closest house was a 10 minute walk away - - the echo from these things was terrific!! Also at night when these flew around bloody hell you know about them!!!
so how come you french needed the usa to take out all the threats in libya ???? and again we help you but you will not help use this is y i dont get it nato
I saw - and heard - a JATO take off of a Mirage IV when I was stationed at BA115 Orange Base Aérienne. That was in the early 90's when there was still an EB Escadron de Bombardement in Orange. These were fantastic planes.
I always thought the Mirages were beautiful planes--and great performance for the time they were developed. I wonder what this bird could do if it had been upgraded with new engines and avionics?
