What all Americans need to understand is, the USA had some of the same thinking and practices as did Nazi Germany of WW2. "Race" is a man made construct push on the world by the European. Sean is right: US is a very poor country. Everyone in the EU has access to parks, castles, cathedrals, etc. by foot, bus & cheap trains. In US, where can you go? Having spent most of my life as one of the American poor, and now living a different life elsewhere, I can say the encroaching third world conditions in my country are appalling. Make sure to keep up with H.R. 645, as they are using Katrina as an argument to pass the legislation.

Well you just summed it up: your experience and prospective depends up on your situation. That is clearly not true for every place in the is country. Plus, it is important to first clear up to anyone, both US and non-US based people, that this country has never ever been egalitarian nor without pockets of poverty. And the same thing goes for Europe as well. That is why I called it a generalization.

Perspective is the key to understanding all things. Perspective can be a difficult thing to attain when you are busy trying to feed and house your family. Poverty doesn't exist in pockets anymore, if it ever did at all. As to poverty elsewhere, as in my country. It exists in a wholly different way. Feeding and housing your family are a given. It's the escape from only being able to do that, that presents the challenge.
