after listening to about 8 videos of Tosin Abasi, like other comments I am NOT impressed. From a technical standpoint Adrian has Tosin beat hands down, and I feel no emotion conveyed from Tosin as opposed to Adrian who is all about emotional conveyence.
@TheDistantOfficial While I respect everyone's opinion, if you cannot find anything impressive about this video then either you know a HELL of a lot more music than I do, or your not being fair, as this is NOT something any beginner can play.
@TheDistantOfficial While I do enjoy Animals As Leaders, and Abasi is a great player, i think you're digging yourself a very deep hole. You have no clue.
first one was awesome, the second guy reminds me of dwight from the office, and i couldn't help but be creeped out and stopped paying attention to the music..
Thank you so much for the response to my question concerning Adrian Leggs' YouTube video of a tune who's name I didn't know. I have found that older album that you mentioned still available on Amazon. The price is a bit steep for me at present as I am unemployed as are so many of us. Thanks again for the important info! Play on! I play a 1984 acoustic made by David Wren. Rare and an amazing piece with incredible balance across. Worth every penny. Regards, rosser63
What is the name of this tune? Where can I find it? I hope it's on one of his CDs! To me it's a "gotta have". Amazing work! Adrian Legg is a reminder that some of us are born unto achieve along a certain pathways.
@rosser63 The song is called Midwest Sunday it is on an album called Guitars and Other Cathedrals. It's been out of print for several years however, I ordered a copy from Amazon there's alot still floating around. (Great album)
According to the site above, seems to me that Gibson's selection is well based on the influence and contribute of each player to the acoustic guitar world...
I used to think, before I played guitar, that the players would sit there and turn those as they played, as if just fretting wasn't getting the job done. Actually I think I was told that by misinformed people. This is the first time I've really seen it like that, but the banjo tuners would help.
@econoroller He's using banjo peg tuners. They allow you to tune instantly between two pre-tuned notes. Normally only for Banjo you can find them for guitar or retro fit them if you like but they won't be easy to find.
There is a tradition of people trying to extend the compass of what it means to play the guitar, which is different to (and a different kind of skill to) excelling in an estbalished discipline of gutiar playing. Adrian Legg is from a tradition that explores what it means to play the guitar. People like eg John Fahey, Robbie Basho, Glenn Branca, Fred Frith, Henry Flynt, Sir Richard Bishop, Henry Kaiser are persistently wondering what you can do with a guitar, how to paint new colorus with it...
Quite often this means doing different types of things in a series of moves, which is extraordinarily difficult. Personally speaking, the reason I am drawn to Legg's music is that he does all of this experimenting and guitar prototyping and manages to make it sounds beautiful, and I suspect that it is why a lot of people feel the same way.
The retuning in this video clip is derived from the Scruggs/Floyd retuning style developed for the banjo and is more frequently met with there. Incoporating it into a fingerstyle guitar was innovative, and difficult.
can some one tell me y is he concidered to be the best? becouse i have heard other stuff from other guys for example the pair of dragon slayer or van halen or santana im not a conosseour but if some one can enlight me i apreciate ty
You're comparing Legg to VH or the guys from Dragon Force? Completely different styles and approaches. Are you for real? That's like comparing motorcycles to airplanes.
ok i said im not a conoseur and for sure you either couse i ask for enlightment and you only said that the stile is diferent ty but i can see that diference by my self.
i keep my question y is he the best if van halen or herman li play like 100 times faster besides thise is not aranjues i mean is that dificoult?
Speed is not the measure of a good guitarist. Anyone can learn to be fast. The important thing to understand is that this guitarist is considered to be very good because of the versatility of his playing. This means he can play many styles competently and with great expression. It also means he has a higher creativity in the way he plays.
"This Guy" is Buster B Jones. He was one of the best pickers. May he rest in Peace and the song he plays is "Live at Five". I think it's from one of the "Fingerstyle Guitar: New Dimensions and Explorations" Videos by Vestapol/SGGW.
I uploaded the vid, i have no affiliation with either Adrian or Brad. I just appreciate their fine guitar playing. If some discovers an unknown guitarist they like through one they are already familiar with, then that can never be a bad thing!!!
Never give up or back down BearBeatsBooga. Cuz the time you do you will never be the guitarist you wish to be. I have learned that practice makes perfect. I am by no means perfect, but I am a hell of a lot better because I never gave up. Keep the dream alive and it will become a reality.
Get out of town! I saw him in philly and he mentioned his daughter/son or grand daughter/son (can't remember which one) was getting married. This was a few years back, really an incredible player and great sense of humor.
Also my two sisters are obviously his grand daughters. Hence the name of his song "A Waltz for Leah." Leah Legg is my sister. Also his daughter/my auntie did get married but i haven't seen her for ages since she moved out of london.
@MatthewLeggMead Heard him years ago when i was first learning and loved his playing ever since, a genius and i hope its encouraged you to play? Tell him Stuee says hello, (he wont know who the hell i am but its cool to think you've said it for me as i think he's one of the best players in the world).
Sure thing. I shall forward this to him if you like. He'd enjoy it.
And you're right he is one of the best players in the world. So proud to be his grand son. I have always wanted guitar lessons. Ive been playing piano for 6-7 years now :)
I gotta say, it's kind of a shame Adrian's performance is first on this vid- don't get me wrong, the guys awesome.... I'd never have heard of him if he wasn't up first- it just seems like nobody is noticing Brad Jones. :( He looks just as cool and nonchalant as Adrian- even though he'splaying crazy stuff on an old freakin nylon string guitar! XD
On the contrary, Bear: this clip should remind you why it's worth doubling your daily practice time. Enjoy the process of learning because it will make reaching the destination that much sweeter. Keep pickin, friend.
Both displays were jaw droppingly wonderful. Makes you wonder if the average Joe stands a chance! I used to think I was OK, but after that lot I might have to raise my game a bit. Know what I mean?
...Adrian Legg is a guitar finger picking god!! 1st heard him as a youth in 85 or so and thought he was great!! Bought fretmelt, his style is unique and brilliant!!
Would having tuners like that make altering tuning mid-song easier, I wonder...? Or is it just down to his godlike skill? XD I've been trying it lately.... but god damn, it's fucking tricky. :(
I've seen Legg stwice. The second time I saw him, he played a song, that he didn't say the name. He just said that it was a hot handed song he played to try to get girls. I was floored. I have no idea what song it was though. Anybody know of a Legg song that rocks above all others?
no...keep playing. The guy has simplicity in his technique. Some of his stuff is easier to play than others but if you try to imitate him, you'll learn stuff and come up with your own unique thing.
Legg'd probably say the same thing. I get your point, though....I remember when I first started playing guitar and virtually everything was unfathomable and then when you finally progress it's like learning how a magician does his tricks and then you go " D'oh" and can't believe it all seemed so difficult!
Certainly both fall within the guitar master category, though I prefer Adrian. He's so inventive, a virtuoso by any stretch of the word, and Brad is probably one of the best country players still coming out with stuff.
This video is great! Adrian Legg's "Midwest Sunday" is one of my favorites. Glad someone put it back up on YouTube. I tried learning it, but it's almost impossible without those tuners that he has. Need to get me some of those.
Good video of Midwest Sunday! I'm a good friend of Adrians. I seen him last friday and saturday night. We hd video and xlr digital audio recorded the last show for promtional material for his site, youtube and myspace. Him and his wife are terrific people. I will let you know when Adrian and I get everything up and running. I does not allow recording at his shows but I have known him now for a few years and he trusts me to push his material. You will enjoy!
What a great vid of Adrian Legg. I saw him perform live this at the Apollo Theatre in Manchester back in 1992 when he supported Joe Satriani. Thanks for posting. I'd hate to see the TAB for this!!!
That was Adrian's old Adamas with super shallow bowl, I wish I could have bought that guitar when he sold it. He hasn't played Ovations for years. He now plays his custom made guitar built and designed by Adrian and Bill Puplett and I must say it's a very comfortable guitar to play.
I still remember the firs time I saw him play - 1996 in NYC opening up for the G3 show with Vai, Satriani and Johnson at the Beacon Theatre....the night the Yankees won the World Series. I never really heard of Adrian before then, but my jaw was on the ground the entire 20 minutes of his opening act. I didn't want him to stop playing....
The stuff he does with the tuners is awesome, but in my opinion, he really displays his "guitarist superpowers" with those insane inside bends in the middle of a traditional chord shape. Like, those are just so damn hard to do. I've tried and tried and absolutely cannot do it.
This is absolutely off the charts ridonculous. Today, I officially announce my retirement from the world of guitar players. If you need me, I'll be playing XBOX and drinking.
what tuning is this ?

Video is fantastic. Saw Adrian in Nashville and sat 4 feet from him. Hard to imagine being able to do all of this pickin'!

Need to get me some of those.

the first guy was Adrian Legg and the solo was about imitating a country pedal effect... try to do the same thing and post again...

Hey "Chrisowen" the tab is giving me a headache, I was working on this song tonight. The tab is bad enough, let alone the tab for the keith tuners.

What a great vid of Adrian Legg. I saw him perform live this at the Apollo Theatre in Manchester back in 1992 when he supported Joe Satriani. Thanks for posting. I'd hate to see the TAB for this!!!
Chris.

That was Adrian's old Adamas with super shallow bowl, I wish I could have bought that guitar when he sold it. He hasn't played Ovations for years. He now plays his custom made guitar built and designed by Adrian and Bill Puplett and I must say it's a very comfortable guitar to play.

Adrian Legg is amazing. The first time I saw him play this live me and all guitar players in the audience fainted and rolled under our chairs.

You guys are too young to remember the fantastic banjo players who used these Keith/Scruggs tuners. Guys like Buck Trent and Earl Scruggs himself.
This is some kind of open tuning he is using on guitar or he would not be able to do this with the tuners.
Great sound and wonderful composition and playing. I really liked it.
