@NoConvict Well, Paccar bought a very good company, but the best achievements were made before the Paccar era. Paccar doesn't do anything, they just bought the company and now they slap their stupid logo on almost everything DAF builds.
Imagine youre Ari Vatanen driving across the desert with over 200 kilometres an hour and you get passed by a truck. Must be sick seeing that out of your window
I'm fucken sick of WMG doing this sheet over and over again, We have to put a stop to this shit. what's a good video like this one with out some good tunes on to pump you up?
by the way there ware 2 exact the same machines expet fot hte paint job thet X still lays in the dessert. there are still some big body penals laying around and for the rest it is just the frame, roll bars and that sort of stuff. the X1 is nowadays still in mint condition it houses at the DAF museum in the city Eindhoven.
Best rally truck ever made, untill the 2nd truck made a devasting high speed crash. After that they started to change regulation and rules to reduce power and speed. 80s saw some of the best and fastes cars ever made, remember Prototype C le Mans , Group B rally, F1 turbo era. 80s what a era that was :-)

Well, Van Loevezijn didn't want to attach his safetybelt to the rolecage, but tot his own seat, so when they crashed Van Loevezijn went straight trough the frontwindow and died, because his safetybelts were attached to his seat instead of the rolecage he just flew with hisown seat. My father saw it,he drove the Paris-Dakar 3 times 1986,1987 and 1988, maby he wants to drive next year, with the same team, as veterans!!:PYeah sad story, but you can say, it was a little his own fault.

Did I see 95XF on the front of this? surely there was no 95 series back in 88, I'd have thought they would have had it based on a 3300 or something?..or was this used as a pre production teaser? Some trucks Though, They say DAF stands for Dead As Fuck In Ireland, but these videos prove that this is far from true.
No, in the front you see X1 or X2. Nothing to do with the later 95XF. The DAF 95 was launched in 1987 and had an improved 11,6 liter engine of the 2800/3300. The DAF 95XF was launched in 1997 and was an face-lift model with the new 12,6 liter engine. 'XF' stands for 'Extra Force'.
of all the the great TRUCKS that were raced in this, the most prestigious and dangerous rallying event-since his very inception back in '79-,the DAF's were the most outrageous and most powerful of them all;my ONLY regret is that this year's edition was "shutdown" due to terrorist threats.f@#&^k them!!!!!
what do you talking about, illegal stuff were only in Daf, disqualification was all right and even not for Tatra teams notification, idiot. Tatra truck were everytime strictly in legal version and Loprais always said that de Roy is favourite son of the marshals
Jan de Rooy is still one of the very best Truck Rally drivers, only way Tatra can defeat him is by politics, like 2006 which is an excellent exaple of Tatra's poor sportsmanship.
With 3 Daf trucks in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd position, Tatra complained about the Daf's suspension, the day before the finish.
The suspension on the Daf's had been approved at tech inspection, but all of a suddenly they where disqualified.
I agree with you that Jan de Rooy is one of the best truck rally drivers but you're talking nonsense about Tatra's. Winner of the Dakar 2006 was russian driver Chagin with Kamaz, not czech driver Ales Loprais with Tatra!! Your comment about complaining the DAF's suspension from Tatra team was totally out! Please read the facts before you post s*it like this, thank you.
The start in 1988 was in Gercy Pontoise beside Paris, it was a great mudpool, after the race they found about 50 shoes and boots in the mud, that year also Kees and Mieke tijsterman started in a pajero, and a pajero with a 2 CV citroen shell.
In the accident of the video one member of De Rooy's tripulation was dead an he took the decision of not take part in the Dakar anymore. However he returned to the rally in 2002 with his son and with DAF also.
The driver who died in from the DAF team, was already warned by Jan the Rooy. That driver was ranked on the first place while driving his first rally. And faster then Jan, who is the most experienced driver. Jan said that the truck was gaining momentum (jumping) above a specified speed, because of lots of small but high wobbles in that part of the track. I think he also regrets it that he didn't warn enough.
a legend, this is histoty. you can t call it a truck anymore but a unlimited racemonster. in this way it has much more potential than a car. this and the increasing danger for drivers caused the ban of these monsters.
This truck is by far the best and most impressive machine the dakar has ever seen.
these video is a must see for every dakar or truck fan.
Jan and the first DAF era trucks were the fastest and most innovative rally trucks ever. They were full factory beasts (the 2nd era was only 'support'), twin engined and turbo's equipped.
Being outlawed and forbidden was the end on an era.
Turbo Twin II was the fastest rally truck ever in action.
It is about driving skills. Thats right that DAF turbo twin was probably the best truck in dakar history, but if De Rooy drove the same Tatra as Loprais, he wouldn´t be as good as he was
I can't stop watching this video, man. It's the first time I've ever seen an automotive video on YouTube with music that actually fit. The clips fit together so well...awesome job.
As I was a young boy I was three or four times in the DAF Museumn in the Netherlands and I still have promotion stickers for the 1986 and 1988 Dakar Rally were DAF won.
you miss the 1998 winner. After DAF team withdrawal it was TATRA and Karel Loprais (his first out of six) after tough battle with Jiří Moskal with LIAZ, who won that year - exactly how had Jan said about the competitors - one of the best - especially TATRA, LIAZ.
Today i drove by Jan de Rooy trucking company. Tucked away in a corner on the terrain.... 3 Daf Dakar trucks from the 80's rusting away. Including the twin cab.
The Daf turbo twin had 2 11.6 liter turbo diesel engines, each developing 1200hp. One engine for the front axle and one for the rear axle, the X1 stands in the DAF museum in Eindhoven.
I thougth two times 600hp for enough reliability, but I assume that 1.200hp is possible (I saw DAF DKZ 1160 engines in tractorpulling with more than 1.500 hp).
1200HP with Alu spaceframe. Speed at that moment aprox 185km/h. Topspeed +/-205-210km/h. Jan wanted to continu the race but The DAF-president stopped them.
He was disqualiqied before the start of dakar because of a stupid reason. The organisation said that there was somthing wrong with the homologation (don't know if it's correct translated). Simply said, the organisation said that there was a problem with the papers/administration

1200HP with Alu spaceframe. Speed at that moment aprox 185km/h. Topspeed +/-205-210km/h. Jan wanted to continu the race but The DAF-president stopped them.

The two co-drivers died when they crashed. That's why DAF stopped racing for a long time.
I think that it was too heavy and big for that speed.

Yes, I think that's the correct translation. Jan is # 502 this year, driving the Ginaf. The race starts on 6th January.

He was disqualiqied before the start of dakar because of a stupid reason. The organisation said that there was somthing wrong with the homologation (don't know if it's correct translated). Simply said, the organisation said that there was a problem with the papers/administration

@MartinVDB1984 ....just like Brabham's infamous "fanmobile" -BT46B- after winning the 1978 F1 Swedidsh Grand Prix from the outright
-it was banned from racing on "safety grounds" as other racers complained of being "showered" by gravel/sand-
