what you're seeing there is quite a normal weather phenomenon, a pileus cloud, these sometimes form above a vigorously convecting cumulus/cumulonimbus cloud. They are formed when air is pushed up by the strong updraft from the growing cloud, it lifts a moist air layer to dew point temp forming this strange looking stratiform layer over the cumulus top that looks a bit like the cloud is wearing a cap. As they are sometimes refered to as "cap clouds"
Clouds in the sky is the begining of a new Acopalypse, All of God's Angels have drawn their final breadth upon our air, let us not fall and trip over our destiny.
I saw a similiar thing an year or two ago. It was during a very dark and cloudy night and happent rather far in the northen horizon, above the red glow of a distant town. There were many of these strange light effects whirling in the sky at the same time, and it was quite spectacular. Best I could say it was as if there were giant ghosts flying in the cloudy night sky, haha.
@Stevan223 That is exactly what I just saw, that's why I'm here, your description matches mine EXACTLY! It's a very cloudy night here where I am, I went to my porch and I saw a light behind the clothes moving really fast and in circular lines, no way it could be a plane, then I thought it was my pupil but I looked to other places and the light was definitely only behind the clothes. I also thought it looked like a ghost flying!!!Man I think you saw exactly what I just saw!
Yes, that'd make sense and would also explain what I saw. The thunder cloulds were probably so far away that all the typical lighting happent under the horizon, so I only saw the intra clould lighting happening high in the cloulds itself. Thanks, been wondering since then what the lights were, and this is definitely the best explanation.
For years I've suspected that lightning would affect the pattern of light in rainbows.
If he cloud is a thunderstorm, during each lightning bolt the electrostatic fields collapse, then increase again before the next flash. E-fields should distort the shape of suspended water droplets, or even make them evaporate or condense. With clouds backlit by the sun, you seem to be in just the right position to see the visible changes in the cloud produced by changes in high voltage during lightning.
That is the second video I have seen which is of the same thing I saw last year (2008) in Australia. It has taken me ages to find this. I recorded the same thing, but not as clearly as yours. My camera batteries were flat, so I could only record short segments before my camera died. I have posted the best few I took. I saw the sweeping light, but also in mine there was a bright light which sometimes intensified before vanishing and then slowly reappearing. I will post a video response.

its intracloud lightning within the storm causing this effect

An excellent catch this video, too.

We were standing there for a good 10-15 minutes watching this and then the storm just got too close so we left.

Thanks! This lasted quite a while if it's the same type of thing that I have posted. How long were you able to view this occurrence?
