I'm a jazz saxophonist....but- this guy and this orchestra is amazing.......I have goosebumps...this is one of the most exciting things I have heard in a long time....I want to buy this recording.
The powerful bass drum & appropriately slow but powerful piano n strings make it so epic at that part. Other performances (even of Rach) didnt give me emotion like this... Best on utube ive ever seen (for that part ^^)
I only usually listen to 10 minutes of Youtube at a time once in a while & I also complained about the split but I know nothing about the technicalities of these videos (I am technologically-challenged)!! However, I would like to find out if it is possible to get a CD by this orchestra of Rachmaninoff since they did such an excellent job!!! Does anyone know?
to all those complaining about the video being cut off... the time limit for a youtube video was 10 minutes at the time. they didn't have much choice.
@Neijya They still could have done the cut at :20 or 1:48 and still gotten the climactic recapitulation in under the ten minutes. Poor judgement. Still this guy is very VERY good---gives the whole concerto, especially in the 2nd Movement just the right tempo and nuance to make it a desirable audio/video to have.
It's too bad they split the recording on 2 videos!!! Cutting it at an end climax was very poor judgment!!! Would have been much, much better if the piece had been recorded completely on 1 video! That said the soloist pianist is excellent & the orchestra is very good as well!!! Is it possible to buy a CD of this Rachmanimoff piece?!!!
Rachmaninoff took music to the next level...he dispensed with the light and pretty/happy music of the classical era and decided to make some emotional, powerful, awe-inspiring, want-to-pound-the-piano-through-the-floor kind of insane orchestration and compositions. That's why he is the best
To be fair, it would have been disruptive wherever they put the break, but maybe they could have chosen a better place. It reminds me of the old 78 rpm records which had such short playing time that one often had to turn them over or change them in the middle of a piece of music.
One day my mother brought one doubble CD made by Cherkin home... The first time I've heard "Cherkin plays Rahmaninov" I was thinking there are godlike hands moving over the piano! Respect!
drtompain, "You are a retard" #1 he is playing on a Steinway, the greatest piano ever. #2 This is a youtube video the sound quality is degraded dramatically. The piano is perfectly tuned you fucktard.
it's not out of tune (the a-flat) in the the first half as far as I can tell - it must have slipped...imagine the frustration! but then again, the orchestra starts to get pretty shady with their tuning (3:49 etc) - I wonder if the heating went off or something :)
Yeah, you're pretty much a jerk. And second of all, he is not responsible for the tuning, which, if you listen to the actual recording instead of the live, is fine.
Its strange, pianist plays some false notes and there one note in the keyboard that sounds false as well, but in this part, pianist plays more confortable as the 1st part. Orchestra plays as good as the beginning but just to remarque somethinf, one of the air istruments plays a little bit loud starting this second part... in general, was good.
i love when music-genre anime inspires people to like classical. it actually got me into classical music- i used to think it was boring until i watched La Corda d'Oro. it was strange being raised classically on piano and violin but disliking classical music haha
The timpanist overdecorates everything... but not in a good way, like some do.
(She) plays the beginning of this clip as if it were Tchaikovsky... with the long staccato strokes... but its Rachmaninov, and its legato... i've played it.
I agree--slower is better for this piece. Nicely done!
I'm so disappointed, however, that the break came at my favorite moment, which was performed superbly, but...lost something, somehow in the mouse clicks necessary to get from I to II.
Absolutely fabulous! This is certainly one of the most musical interpretations I've heard in years of this old warhorse. Too many pianists toss this off as being a virtruosic exercise. Not here. Bravo! Never heard of these performers either. Check out the Volodos version. Also very very good.
you know, i find that most people who criticize performances like you are people who only listen to different recordings and then judge others' playings based on that...why don't you learn to play the piece first, and then make your judgments. i don't know if you really do play music at all, but judging by your comment, you're either an arrogant bastard who thinks you can play this piece better, or some ignorant dumbass who doesn't know music at all.
I love this concerto soooo much its my second favorite piano concerto the first has to be grieg! and then this one, and then the third would have to be beethovens 1st.

That out of tune key is really starting to show starting in this section. IDK if you can hear it. Around 0:45 and onward.
Wonderful performance. =)
