Yes, the screw that locks the top outer cover is a Torx #10 (at least it is on my 80 GB). I couldn't fit my driver inside the hole to get at the screw because I first used a multi-driver that uses different kinds of heads (Phillips, Flat-heads, Hex, Torx, etc.) for a tip. I guess by design that made the shaft diameter too big to slide through the square hole to get at that screw.

Anyway, I bought a solid one-piece driver which was thin enough. It set me back 5 bucks. No biggie.

@metcalfestarfish its a security star bit, like a star bit but with a hole in the end to fit the little pole thingy in it.... should be able to find one at a big hardware store OR you can find a tiny flat head screw driver that fits into one of the legs of the star and wedge it in and turn- how I got mine open lol

The reason I am taking it apart I suffered a failure with the red flashing light I looked accross a few forums and they said that something had come loose and needed reconnecting. However now I have it all open everything seems to be intact and connected properly. It's a 40GB bought in 2008 or 09 any ideas which part I should be looking at?

Wait a sec...that is not the tool that I had to use to remove the screw under the warranty sticker.

I USED A TORX SIZE #10. A SOLID ONE-PIECE TORX DRIVER !!

In my experience, I found that socket type drivers with interchangeable bits have a shaft that is too large of a diameter for the shaft to fit into the hole for the screw that fastens the outer cover. Thus the need for a non-interchangeable, solid, one-piece Torx #10 screwdriver.

Thanks. I watched 5 other videos first but they were trying to get a bit to fancy with soundtrack and shaky camera, and other annoying crap. Your video cut out the bs and showed how to get the cover off which was all I needed for my first gen 80 GB.

Word of advice for you and others for instructional videos: use brighter lighting when using low res (240p). When following along on instructional videos some people like to use full-screen settings to better see what is being done. Thx again

Dude, you take the hard drive out to replace it with on with more capacity. Swapped my 40G hard drive out for a fine Seagate 500G.

DO NOT do the fan test, as some people have mentioned here. It overheats the machine and can cause damage. However, if you have a CD/DVD stuck in the machine, you can try the fan test as a last resort.

Opening the case voids the warranty (not the hard drive swap, though). Be sure you'll accept the consequences - unless warranty is already run out.

@eastsidahboy People could take it apart for various reasons, i looked up this vid so i could take my PS3 apart to clean inside since PS3 games have stopped working on my consol. Other people take it apart since they have problems with the disc "claws", they jam and keep the disc inside. You should probably take your PS2 apart every now and then and give it a good clean with cotton wool to make sure it works perfectly constantly :3
