  • a real genius

    soul brother lives on

  • Great, never reached!

  • I love Donny Hathaway`s music.This song is great.

  • Much respect!!!

  • thanks for posting, man willie weeks can play !!! awesome...

  • bass line is in 11/09 bass player

  • Yiah ! Respect !

  • Yes!!!! so very good this morning.

  • incredible.....respect...

  • rip Donny

  • Really a great song. ALso, Dr. Dre sampled this track on his 1992 album The Chronic.

  • have i taught you people nothing? stop comparing music ahhh

  • word, stevie and to fucked with

  • We are not comparing the talent or the worth; Just the references and influences. Much respect to the virtuosos who are in the rarefied air. Musicians constantly listen to other musicians to find their voice in the world.

  • Thank you, Brilliantbeing.

  • This album WAS my musical upbringing. The musicians are amazing (especially Willie Weeks and Cornell Dupree).

Donny is so underrated, most people I know have never heard of him, unless they are familiar with Roberta Flack.

My only disappointment is that it would have been wonderful to be in the audience at the concert this was recorded from.

  • Just evokes the emotion out of you. Great Song!!!

  • EXCELLENT! so pretty sad song!!!

  • Classic, classic, classic. This album had such a profound effect on me as a teenager. I was 14 years old when my parents brought this album home. I'm 47 now. Thanks mom and dad for exposing me to greatness at an early age! And, Thank you so much for posting this! Much love for Donny Hathaway.

  • I Love The Sound of the Needle against the Wax LOL!!

    AWESOME POST !!

    R.I.P. Mr. Hathaway

  • he's the one of the Best!

  • Superb !!!

  • This is soooo awesome. I love Donny's voice. He influenced sooo many amazing SINGERS.

  • He is so underated as an artist. Donny was Atlantic records answer for Motown's Stevie Wonder. Hathaway's voice is superior to Wonder's.

  • Hathaway's voice was Stevie Wonder on steroids. Similar phrasing with a much richer timbre.

  • I always said that he and george benson and stevie wonder sounded similiar

  • i agree with you....all i knew was stevie, i knew of george benson but just discovered that his voice is beautiful! very similar to donny's....Donny is the man!

  • What a voice.

  • intro is dope!

  • one word : fantastic :)

  • R.I.P. Donny

  • Miticoooo!

  • Don't know what it is about Donny. He reaches down deep and touches. I love this song. Had this album on an 8 track tape in 1972 and played it a million times blasting it as I drove through the city streets.

Thanks for honoring such a great singer and someone who almost always brings tears to my eyes when I hear his beautiful soul sung out.

    All the best,

    Annette

  • i am 27 n i love this his music!! he is truly a genis ...what has music become?

  • I remember this song from the seventies. This and "Ain't it Wonderful We're Still Friends" were among my favorites from the live album.I think the bass player is Willie Weeks---awesome!!! Oh,by the way my black brothers, I'm a white country music fan---But nothing compares to the talent Donnie Hathaway had.I too, mourn that he passed way too soon. Thanks for posting these songs. They are precious and beautiful.

  • Oh yes this so communicates his greatness as a pianist and singer. If you wanna treat check out his album. Extension of A Man. He arranges the orchestra and has the true classical knowledge like Ravel etc and plays so well. I heard Stevie Wonder and his band once at a sound check play about six songs including If you ever leave me baby. and Valdez in the country etc. Yes thanks for putting this on Youtube ! Xpunky Bash

  • yes, I like that

  • WU TANG IS FOR THE CHILDREN!

    peace donnie.

  • 100% American... The real deal brother. No jokes or games played here. Survival of the Fittest!

  • Whoooooooo, Sang It DoNNY!

  • best live album ever. the crowd are as musical as donnie. gives me the shivers...

  • What a groove, what a bassline ,wow love this track!!

  • "Little ghetto boy, your daddy was blown away..

He robbed that grocery store.. don't you know that

was a sad, sad old day..."

His inflection there was so genuine. You could feel it. OMG this song is so powerful, and remains culturally relevant today.

  • hw tha hell can i get some of this musix on hard .

  • This is te gansta Music, I ride throught the ghetto windows down halfway

Halfway out of my mind music on 9, blasting Donny Hathaway

Me and my niggas spending half the day Jay Z

  • "Little ghetto boy, your daddy was blown away..

He robbed that grocery store.. don't you know that

was a sad, sad old day..."

Amazing. Donny left the world far, far too soon and his body of work is the biggest tease in the history of music... leaving you wanting more but ultimately not getting any.

  • I couldn't agree with you more. I'm only 28 but I love old school music. It's so original and genuine. Not like 90% of the crap that passes for music today. Everyone sounds alike. There's very little originality in music today

  • DR DRE sampled this on the chronic album in 92...

  • wu tang forever as well

  • Wonderful!

  • Can some teach me how to play bass like that...Please?!

  • The things I see now as an adult, makes me wish I could go back to my childhood in the late 60's

  • Good comment

  • Willie Weeks just blew me away on bass on this song. Nobody grooves like this anymore. This song is a cultural masterpiece.. You don't listen to it, you feel it.

  • OHHHH YEAHHH!!

  • I just fell in love with soul music

  • Awesome.

  • What A GORGEOUS VOICE GOD BLESS YOU DONNY= RIP

  • *WOW*!!@ that Ole-Skoo record player, just like the one i had when i was a lil blk chile....I must be old huh? *LOL*...Donnie is the Best!

  • This is my theme song!

  • oh the record cracks in the beginning...authentic im lovin it!!!

  • Burial use it as special effects in his songs, I agree it's a very cool sound. Warm and fuzzy

  • Nice bass on this track. Very much in the Jamerson school.

  • Donny should put out a new album.

  • That would be a great trick since he is no longer with us. Donny committed suicide back in the mid 70's.

  • oh my bad

  • ohhh boy

  • If he puts out a new album then I know something. Honey Donny Hathaway is deceased, have been for some time now.

  • I love the crackle in the album....awesome

  • This song is about me.

  • 100% man .....GREAT POSt!!!!

  • LADIES AND GENTS THIS IS PERFECTION

  • man, listen this bass line!! uhou willi weeks!!

  • Perfection ! My favorite singer of all time. Man ! Listen to Willie Weeks on Bass. I think it's Fred White on Drums...Amazing feel and perfect time.

  • What an amazing song.

It's such a shame that this man is no longer among us....

    R.I.P. Donny!

  • Simply a masterpiece...

I wish I had this album on vinyl...

  • Could someone please post Lord Help Me by Donny Hathaway.

  • You've got to believe in yourself and all you do. You've got to fight to make it better. Then you'll see how others will start believing too.

  • Blown away! Wow. I echo the sentiments of what everyone has already said. You can feel the spirit and soul in his (amazing) voice.

    Very very impressive.

  • Very nice song. Thanks for posting. lol at the end.

  • This man is a legend! I LOVE Donny's music!! And his daughter Lalah is a magificent songstress!

  • I love your video!!!Thanks for posting. Donny is pure genius. I can never get enough of his music!!What a voice!!

  • The most soulfull voice ever

  • Donny paved the way for a lot of artist today. There would be no Usher,Musiq,R.Kelly just to name a few. He was the man period. He made a style that some artist is trying to capture but it can't be done. Some people are born to do what they do.

  • saw him perform at my college before the live album was recorded. these same songs. the night touched me. not only does he have perfect pitch but as someone said before his truth shines through. it's a shame that he took his own life. it hurts me to this day. life can be a "b" but you have to stick it out.

  • you.... saw.... him.... chilling... the man makes me cry. just to hear his voice, so full of optimism; we may never know the pain he suffered. he touched the lives of so many who encountered him. you are so fortunate. i was about 2 when he transitioned. this 'live' album is one of my favourite ever albums... so beautiful.

  • Wow, you got to see Donny perform!!!That is amazing. What a blessing!!This man is PURE GENIUS!!!

  • He suffered from Skitzophrenia paranoia and had 2 take like 12 pills daily and with his hectic schedule he started slipping up and spazzing out and at a hotel one day he just removed the window and jumped, hurts me too,and i'm just 16,momz played him 4 me as a shawty

  • The best male voice ever...period

  • Absolutely. I "discovered" him for myself a few months ago--I got his "Greatest Hits" then went right back to the Virgin Megastore and bought up every album of his they had. Seriously, he changed and IS CHANGING my life with his art. And that's not hyperbole. Truly a great artist.

  • Same thnig happen to me when I accidently stumbled upon Giving Up many many years ago, and went out and bought everything I could. I just recently was able to get the 1979 issue of The Ebony magazine about his life and death (from an estate sale). Boy was this a treat for me. This man so inspires me through his music and GENIUS!!

  • What's amazing to me about Donny is that his studio albums are amazing, and somehow his live performances still seem to blow those out of the water.

Cat was taken way before his time, such a shame.

  • excatly! i see so many post like this, and well, its just good to see many people appreciate donny hathaway. i believe just from hearing his music.. that he put his mind, heart, soul and spirit into his music and it was wholesome truth. its not suprising that his music that resonates with many different people.

  • best live Album

  • big up

  • This is what it is...damn
