We are not comparing the talent or the worth; Just the references and influences. Much respect to the virtuosos who are in the rarefied air. Musicians constantly listen to other musicians to find their voice in the world.
Classic, classic, classic. This album had such a profound effect on me as a teenager. I was 14 years old when my parents brought this album home. I'm 47 now. Thanks mom and dad for exposing me to greatness at an early age! And, Thank you so much for posting this! Much love for Donny Hathaway.
i agree with you....all i knew was stevie, i knew of george benson but just discovered that his voice is beautiful! very similar to donny's....Donny is the man!
Don't know what it is about Donny. He reaches down deep and touches. I love this song. Had this album on an 8 track tape in 1972 and played it a million times blasting it as I drove through the city streets.
Thanks for honoring such a great singer and someone who almost always brings tears to my eyes when I hear his beautiful soul sung out.
I remember this song from the seventies. This and "Ain't it Wonderful We're Still Friends" were among my favorites from the live album.I think the bass player is Willie Weeks---awesome!!! Oh,by the way my black brothers, I'm a white country music fan---But nothing compares to the talent Donnie Hathaway had.I too, mourn that he passed way too soon. Thanks for posting these songs. They are precious and beautiful.
Oh yes this so communicates his greatness as a pianist and singer. If you wanna treat check out his album. Extension of A Man. He arranges the orchestra and has the true classical knowledge like Ravel etc and plays so well. I heard Stevie Wonder and his band once at a sound check play about six songs including If you ever leave me baby. and Valdez in the country etc. Yes thanks for putting this on Youtube ! Xpunky Bash
He robbed that grocery store.. don't you know that
was a sad, sad old day..."
Amazing. Donny left the world far, far too soon and his body of work is the biggest tease in the history of music... leaving you wanting more but ultimately not getting any.
I couldn't agree with you more. I'm only 28 but I love old school music. It's so original and genuine. Not like 90% of the crap that passes for music today. Everyone sounds alike. There's very little originality in music today
Willie Weeks just blew me away on bass on this song. Nobody grooves like this anymore. This song is a cultural masterpiece.. You don't listen to it, you feel it.
Donny paved the way for a lot of artist today. There would be no Usher,Musiq,R.Kelly just to name a few. He was the man period. He made a style that some artist is trying to capture but it can't be done. Some people are born to do what they do.
saw him perform at my college before the live album was recorded. these same songs. the night touched me. not only does he have perfect pitch but as someone said before his truth shines through. it's a shame that he took his own life. it hurts me to this day. life can be a "b" but you have to stick it out.
you.... saw.... him.... chilling... the man makes me cry. just to hear his voice, so full of optimism; we may never know the pain he suffered. he touched the lives of so many who encountered him. you are so fortunate. i was about 2 when he transitioned. this 'live' album is one of my favourite ever albums... so beautiful.
He suffered from Skitzophrenia paranoia and had 2 take like 12 pills daily and with his hectic schedule he started slipping up and spazzing out and at a hotel one day he just removed the window and jumped, hurts me too,and i'm just 16,momz played him 4 me as a shawty
Absolutely. I "discovered" him for myself a few months ago--I got his "Greatest Hits" then went right back to the Virgin Megastore and bought up every album of his they had. Seriously, he changed and IS CHANGING my life with his art. And that's not hyperbole. Truly a great artist.
Same thnig happen to me when I accidently stumbled upon Giving Up many many years ago, and went out and bought everything I could. I just recently was able to get the 1979 issue of The Ebony magazine about his life and death (from an estate sale). Boy was this a treat for me. This man so inspires me through his music and GENIUS!!
excatly! i see so many post like this, and well, its just good to see many people appreciate donny hathaway. i believe just from hearing his music.. that he put his mind, heart, soul and spirit into his music and it was wholesome truth. its not suprising that his music that resonates with many different people.

This album WAS my musical upbringing. The musicians are amazing (especially Willie Weeks and Cornell Dupree).
Donny is so underrated, most people I know have never heard of him, unless they are familiar with Roberta Flack.
My only disappointment is that it would have been wonderful to be in the audience at the concert this was recorded from.

He is so underated as an artist. Donny was Atlantic records answer for Motown's Stevie Wonder. Hathaway's voice is superior to Wonder's.
Bevsaw52 2 years ago 12
Hathaway's voice was Stevie Wonder on steroids. Similar phrasing with a much richer timbre.
