  • I don't understand why you are forcing your chooks to bed??!! They go to bed naturally when it starts getting dark!

  • Yep. We amateurs back then!

  • orsen hodge!!

  • This sounds so exciting. I have until April 10th to find out if I am successful at hatching my own little guys. I can't wait; I'm so jealous right now. :)

  • Good luck!

  • Oh, dear, please don't tell my you named that hen Frittata! Oh, well, I s'pose it's better than Fricassee :-).

  • Nice set up!

Please help me where to get chickens and what kind of chickens will do well in tennessee so I can get eggs all year round, and, and how many chickens will I need to get 5 eggs a day? anxious to get started as I have shed to convert to coop.

  • Get five started Red Start pullets from McMurray Hatchery. (You can order online.) These are sweet, friendly, reliable hens; we've had great luck with McMurray. Enjoy!

  • Should I get a rooster too?

  • Only if you want chicks; you don't need a rooster for the hens to lay.

  • You have a great city chicken set up. May the Mad City Chicken be with you!

  • What's ironic is:

    1. The chickens have chosen to sleep in an old boiler room across the way instead of the fancy coop I build for them, and

    2. All that arm waving is utterly unnecessary; the chickens are quite capable of finding their way to the coop on their own, at the proper time, thank you very much.

The way of the Mad City Chicken is inscrutable indeed!

  • Yes, we have three pullets (2 White Ameraucanas, and 1 white Plymouth Rock). We build our own chicken tractor (an A-frame style with a skylight) and got the pullets about 1 month ago. We found our first egg today!! Such a thrill!

  • CONGRATULATIONS! That is such an exciting thing. You will be up to your ears in eggs soon. Make sure you have plenty of cartons -- your friends will be wanting some of those fresh eggs! A tractor is a great idea; yours sounds very swanky. We live in the city, so there's really no room for a tractor; we have arranged the backyard planting so the chickens can pretty much run around wherever they want.

  • I just posted my first video. It is a slideshow of how we built our chicken tractor (portable coop). We are in a city too. We can't let the hens free range. We just lift the coop to a new patch of lawn or empty garden bed every two days.

  • Very cute! Did you build the coop yourselves?

  • Yes! (About three times.)

    Do you have chickens?
