Great question. It could have been invented before that, even three thousand years ago...if someone thought about it. Some people believe there are roman pots with recordings on them. I think that's a bit of a stretch.
it wouldn't surprise me if he attemted something of the sort! if so, this particular experiment would have meant great secrecy, for they probably would have burned him at the stake or locked him up somewhere like galileo galilei for heresy and witchcraft. i'm amazed at the public reations to new innovations, like the railway in it's infancy. people believed that the higher speeds could harm the passengers. heck, even edison had difficulties in marketing his inventions in the beginng.
Of course it works. In an age where tinfoil is virtually very rare and where in the Philippines (that where i live) aluminum foil tape is only found in hardwares, plastic wrap or plastic cups are the best alternative.
@phonoplane Well, the main flaw of these cup-style phonographs is that cylinders don't lend themselves to recording laterally like discs do, and plastic cups are relatively thin. I could see it working with a foil covering, or with more tracking weight. I'm currently making a foil phonograph right now, so I'll experiment with some materials.
hey, look who it is, my old phonograph pal from the states! i'm in the midst of planning for my 3rd machine. this time i will use a cnc machine for a greater accuracy in the making! personally i find these japanese made cup phonograph a nice toy, an electric motor is always great, but i think the sideways recording on this level absorbs more sound than it would using the classic hill and dale version!
youtube is the best source for displaying these machines! :)
