@hawrani Actually leg extensions are harmful so my doctor and physical therapist at michael johnson center said to do terminal knee extensions or TKE. it works VMO better look up terminal knee extinction or tke and then you will see
This is NOT a good machine (knee extensors) for knee problems such us Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury due to biomechanical issues of the knee.First of all this is an open chain excercise. When you extend the knee in this machine from 40 degrees flexion to 0 degrees (full extension), the quadriceps tendon pull out the head of the tibia (in front). This is why ACL exists, to avoid the front shift of the tibia. So there is a lot of tense in ACL doing this excersice.AVOID after ACL reconstraction!!
Interesting video. Have you ever heard of the VM overpowering the others? My chiropractor said my VM are more developed than my other "heads" just from looking at them. I do have knee pain on one leg.
@StanleyKu You are rare but not alone. there are others like you that genetically have a strong VM. Knee pain can come from many sources so I suggest you keep in touch with your physio. Thanks for the feedback.
@make940000 Over the past 13 years that Iv repaired hundreds of patella tendonitis issues with knees, no exercise has ever been more right. It seems you do know sooo much more than me and thank you so much for writing such a productive comment. Iv learnt so much from you. Thank you for correcting me on my mistakes. You are a real champion.
@thePTDEN Leg extensions are an "open-chain" exercise that literly shear the knee joint... i have a patella issue and every professional has told me that.
@MrPeeweeplayer You are right. Leg extensions are a very bad exercise for you knee if you work it hard. Sometimes Il just go llight after squats and pushing actions (and go lighter) just to work whatever fibres I have left. This exercise wont heal all knee joints either. It will help if you have patella tendonitis and you need to stregthen you vastus medialis. Thanks for your comment. For the record I dont have a leg ext machine in my personal training studio here in sydney.
Thanks for this video, im looking to strengthen this. I dislocated my left knee 7 times in a span of 10 years, i never had it checked until 2 years ago and the doctor said everything is fine, but i feel like the knee can pop out easily, and it basically is keeping me from playing team sports. With that said, i'll be lookin forward to improving my VMO (and every other part of my legs) and see what happens with the knee. Good info in this video.
Assuming one is healthy enough to do them, would quarter squats achieve a similar emphasis on the vastus medialis without the shearing force on the knee produced by leg extensions?
@iloton I agree, but only if VMO is activating properly. When you have swelling in the knee VMO tends to shut down quite quickly, and does not always re-activate when the swelling goes down. External rotation of the hip also has no effect on VMO activity as VMO doesn't extend the knee but actually stabilizes the patella (Lieb and Perry, 1968). When you do your quarter squats place your fingers on your VMO to make sure it stays tight from 0 to 20 degrees. Then you can move up to strength exercise
@falxcerebri21 Thanks for the feedback and additional info regarding the function of VMO. I'm not injured, but I do a lot of deep squatting as a part of a mostly oly lifting routine and lately my knee has seemed a little unstable, so I'm thinking of adding quarter squats as a way of preventing imbalance, rather than rehabilitating an injury per se.
I injured my ACL and MCL ligaments playing football and I am currently undergoing physiotherapy, primarily to strengthen my Vsatus medialis muscle, which seems to have atrophied .This is causing lateral pulling of my patella. These exercises are part of my rehab program. We are endevering to counteract the Vastus lateralis muscle and hopefully avoid surgery. To the bloke who said these are dangerous , ignore him, he does not know what he talking about.
THIS EXERCISE IS INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS FOR THOSE WHO HAVE KNEE PROBLEMS. THIS IS GROSSLY IRRESPONSIBLE OF THE PTDEN TO SHOW THIS AND SUGGEST OTHERS COPY IT. THIS IS A DISGRACE. PLEASE, DO NOT DO IT - I KNOW, I HAVE HAD KNEE TROUBLE FOR YEARS. THIS GUY IS CLEARLY A COMPLETE FOOL, WITH NO KNOWLEDGE OF WHAT HE IS ADVOCATING.
thanks for this video. Got a problem with my knee and knee extensions have helped. I was doing something similar to this but now I'll change it to just the top 30 or so degrees with my knee pointing outwards a bit.
@thePTDEN one doctor has told me that my quad-to-knee tendon has been overused(and I assume got torn or something. it has inflammation whatever the case). the other has told me my kneecap(I assume) is a bit off to the right. Either way I think it will help seeing how both of them plus another doctor I asked online told me to do knee extensions so its all good. thanks again for the video!
@belldogg19 Its a very delicate movement and too much weight can damage the knee so take a lighter weight and spend time with a slow controlled movement performing a higher rep range.

This is so wrong that it makes me cry. Nothing compared to your "arm rips off shoulder without lats" video though.

iloton 6 months ago
@iloton Unfortunately not. the squat places emphasis on the vastus lateralis more so than the medialis and will make the situation worse.
thePTDEN 6 months ago
@thePTDEN Quarter squats are not squats, and they have been shown to emphasize the vastus medialis specifically.

My vastus lateralis is twice as big and strong as my vastus medialis. Thanks for these tips cause I need to balance these muscles out.

yo i need answers man. i injured my right knee 2 weeks ago and my vastus medialis in my right knee is smaller than my left. can i regain the muscle?
ANDREvan12 7 months ago
@ANDREvan12 Of course you can. Remember this vid does not have all the answers and for best rehab results, see your local physiotherapist.

@lordstorm88 Just check with physio if you need to strengthen this muscle in the first place as this exercise does not solve all knee problems.
