English Ivy? I congratulate the guy for tearing out the lawn but if he were really environmentally minded he would more mindful of the non-native, invasive species he is planting in place of his lawn.
Growing fruit, vegetables and herbs would be a better use. It would certainly lower your carbon footprint In the UK there is a movement to do this called 'Up Front'. As you mentioned most people don't actually use their front lawn.

Low maintenance is my type of garden.
