= = i am just really curious about what is the difference between the anal sex and the vaginal sex.. of course i know they are different parts of the female body. is it the texture makes them different?
err...will my post offend anybody here? if so, sorry!!!
Wait a second..... Pregnant? He couldn't tell the difference between her front and her back? Maybe that's where the "tight asian" old wives tale comes from. They were really banging a male behind but too drunk to tell the difference? That's pretty racist.
@Nurasake well, I would argue that as a spectator you are supposed to notice what Gallimard, as the utmost arrogant racist orientalist (check Said) that he is, is not able to. His image of the oriental female is so firmly implanted in his psyche that it even overrules his rational thinking/gift of observation. He sees what he expects to see, not what is actually there. That is the point of Hwang's play, the message if you want. So no use complaining about the lack of realism - it's intended.
this film is so badly written, directed and shot, and the plot is so homophobic. How can someone like Cronenberg film such shit? With Jeremy Irons!!!!! This is really appalling... Fit only for homophobic viewers and on top of that really bad filmmaking. Cronenberg, stick to what you CAN do well, please. Awwwwful
@amatorynumber I have always rather read it as a comment on what Edward Said calls Orientalism, on the West's prefabricated image of the East and the self-deception and lack of interest in reality that comes with it. I don't know if either Song or Gallimard actually define themselves as homosexual, and if they are and don't even know that about themselves, I still don't quite see the hatred for homosexuals in this movie. Maybe you could elaborate?
@rokoschnuckel I wrote that comment so long ago that I barely remember the movie but I will try: It is impossible that Gallimard did not know his lover was a man. It was obviously a way out of embarrassment at being gay in a time when it was a shame. His profession was and is full of gay men and it was pretty much don't ask don't tell among them, but the general public was something else. Cronenberg and his mystique damages the reality of the story and adds nothing. Only mild sentimentalism.
@amatorynumber In the book "Art of seduction" Robert Greene covers the idea of his childhood homosexual acts and the way "John" Seduced him. THe time of the sex or play rather, the French men was already lost in a world he didn't want to leave
@amatorynumber LOL its a long book and im limited on space here. There is ALOT more to the M.butterfly than the movie comes near to covering.. The movies motives are based on seduction to get what one needs, hence John seduced the French man for information.
@milnusthegnome I take it you also watched "Big Trouble In Little China" except that film had a Chinese girl with black hair and green eyes. This one is so ridiculous. Either way, that child is gonna have dark hair and dark eyes. Of course, if a Chinese child has a Caucasian parent who has blond hair, that child is capable of producing blond-haired children. Now as far as the Chinese and Caucasian features go, that's even more random.

@hayamatsuka Not just to Song--he was really rude to that servant too. Not that that servant doesn't deserve to get punched in the face for peeping at Song and Rene during their sex scenes, though.
A man knows how he wants a woman to act, which has nothing to do with how a real woman acts. Jean Genet understood the relationship between master/slave, aristocrat/proletariat, man/ woman; they are all based on the same lies & the need to dominate another & the fear that is at it's base.
@tomunio89 Yeah. It's also possible that Chin, who was born a woman, is jealous because Song was born a man and even he makes a more attractive woman than she does--when he doesn't have that five o'clock shadow on his face, that is.
i lvoe her her voice and words are so perfect her personality gosh i go crazy over a woman like that

In both they need to use a lot of lube, doubly so with anal sex.

What! How can a man be pregnant?
SugerDodi 10 months ago
@SugerDodi he's lying. I know he's lying!
cefanine 8 months ago
@SugerDodi He can't, and that's because a man's body wasn't designed to carry a pregnancy.

Ugh... every time I see this movie, all I can think about is how much Song looks like my very very male cousin. And it ruins the entire movie.
