  • I love the coats the men wore in this era!!! They look so majestic and handsome. I like their outfits too.

  • I like that song so much.

  • Poor Mr. Knightley. I feel for him, seeing Emma and Frank together CONSTANTLY.

  • I was like cringing so much at the insult

  • Mrs. Elton is so adorable at 3:44 she looks like a teddy bear!

  • what does Knightly mean with his comment at 6:50? Sometimes it's hard to understand him..

  • @Pirate4T it has a double meaning

-mr weston's joke was talking about perfection and was the 'perfect' conundrum, so no one can follow that with anything equally good (it has come too soon)

-it also has the message that emma's 'perfection' has come to be much to early- she is too young, too silly, too vain and conceited to possibly be perfect, but this self-image has arisen much too soon in her and is ruining her character

at least, thats what i think he means :)

  • I literally just screamed "MEANMEANMEANMEAN!" At my screen.

  • emma's pink stripey dress seems so modern

  • I love Jane FairFax's dress in the Box Hill scene!

  • Lol after reading the book I saw the "only three at once" comment coming and was CRINGING away for five minutes straight. :L

  • Ouch!

  • Emma's facial features and movements remind me a bit of Drew Barrymore.

  • I think Emma gets carried away too easily, expecially with Mr Churchill, and I really think they have great chemistry if only he wasn't such a horrible liar. I always feel sorry for Jane, just sitting there like a wet blanket and letting him flirt with Emma! xx

  • this picnic was too funny. mr. churchill is quite the bitch

  • Oh dear Emma, first you talk Harriet out of marrying the man she loves and then you insult poor Miss Bates. :/ Just keep your mouth shut!

  • 4:21 If looks could kill...

  • Mr Elton seems to still be in love with Emma.

  • I try to skip the insult...it makes me very upset with her.

  • Jane does look pretty.

  • Oh Emma~ I always cringe when the insult happens.

  • after seeing this the second time i know understand what's the insult.

  • i loved this dress at the beginning of the clip, its a regency cut, but the flower/leaf pattern the beige and brown colours somhow make it seem modern, like a summer shirt from zara or something

  • I've always dreaded the part where Emma insults Mrs. Bates : /

  • A big part of Emma's growth throughout the story is her realization of how much she is like Mrs. Elton in her treatment of Harriet. Mr. Knightly is so disappointed in Emma because she is so fickle and shallow in nature, and allows others to influence her. However, he obviously sees the kind person Emma is underneath, and how honest she tries to be, despite being so comically mistaken.

  • @mariecake I don't think there is so big a parallel as you insist. The one thing that differs Emma's treatment of Harriet and Mrs. Elton's treatment of Jane is that Harriet is clearly receptive to such attention, and Emma actually really appreciates her. For example, if Harriet displayed the kind of unwillingness or disgust towards Emma that Jane shows to Mrs. Elton, I think Emma would be perceptive and polite enough to leave her alone.

  • I can't stand Fran Churchill!!! He gets on my nervs...

  • @araalor lol you just made me think of Frank Churchill as The Nanny! But yeah I agree with you there!

  • aww Emma was so rude, it made my heart so small :(

  • Ah, in this version you can actually see how Frank Churchill influences Emma, that it is really his mood and behaviour that make her say out loud what she always thought but would never have dared to say. And you can understand why it hurts Knightley.

  • @Tipadou I agree; wonderful observation! You can tell, especially in this version (I am in love with their acting) that Emma realizes her own mistake soon after the words come out of her mouth.

  • HOW CAN JANE STAND IT!

  • Ugghh Mrs. Elton is such a shrew. She's so rude to Emma and she called to Jane as if she were a dog.

  • mrs. elton here plays caroline bingley in lost in austen!

  • @squooshibananaa Wasn't she also Miss Ingram in BBC's recent version of Jane Eyre

  • @Gojjo87 Yes, she was!

  • @Gojjo87 ... You are right Christina Cole played Blanche Ingram, in Jane Eyre with Toby Stephens and Ruth Wilson, but she was Caroline Bingley in 'Lost in Austen' too, Christina plays 'bitches' so well, doesn't she... :0)X

  • I don't get it! Frank doesnt need to be so nice to Emma, he's such a jerk!

  • i am very much confused! Is Frank still trying to appear interested in Emma to hide his affections for jane? I suppose i will know later

  • @animefetish yep, he flirts with her to blind the others to his attachment to Jane. He thinks it's alright because he believe Emma to be indifferent to him

  • I went to Box Hill when I first came to Britain to study. The view really is amazing.

  • The actress who played Emma reminds me of Drew Barrymore, in gestures, the way she speaks, and even her voice.

  • @zashie84th i completely agree with you! I was thinking the same thing the whole time! :)

  • Men are to wear coats in hot weather too??!!! -_-

  • Ok did Harriet's sneeze crack anybody else up? It's so loud and ill-timed. Hilarious.

  • I feel so bad for Miss Bates... D:

  • wow..... AWKWARD PICNIC much?

  • Ouch

  • *awkward turtle*

  • such an awkward picnic, I would find myself very untoward in a situation like that ;)

  • I can't get all what Miss Bates says, she speaks so quick!

what does she says after "3 things very dull..."??

  • @LaFara125 ...  I have watched quite a few times and here... I hope is what you are after..;

Miss Bates: 3 things dull indeed... that would be tailor-made for me... I can be relied upon to say 3 dull things as soon as I open my mouth shan't I?"

Emma : ...Oh but there is a difficulty... you may be limited to numbers... Only 3 at a time..."

Miss Bates ... Yes I see what she means... I must hold my tongue... I must be very disagreeable today..."

    EMMA feels remorse

    Best regards from WALES :0)x

  • @wenglishsal thanks!! that was exactly what I didn't get! n_n

  • "M and A. Em-muh!" I'd have to agree, as my name is Emma, as well. :D I was actually named after Emma Woodhouse.

  • Lol, who else is a fan of Mr Woodhouse's mannerisms? Loved his fed-up sigh after Emma mentioned her trip to Boxhill :P

  • @KarensHalifax I LOVE him. i happen to find him so endearing like the grandfather I always wanted and never had.

  • This was the first episode that I actually started to like Frank Churchill....amazing.. :)

  • Yeah, I felt the sting there too! Never felt it in any other version.

  • Jane Fairfax looks so sad for her poor aunt after Emma's comment. And the way Miss Bates' eyes go from cheerful to so hurt is really painful to watch! Almost like the part in Ep 1 where Miss Bates looks around her small cottage and at her poor mother and almost loses herself to her unhappy situation.

  • this is the only part in which i find emma very disagreeable

  • although frank churchill may be a complete player, i find him rather adorable.

  • don't worry, you are not the only one :) I particularly like his smile, and he has this boyish look about him that is rather becoming. Plus I also found Mr. Elton rather handsome as well, and in a way I thought the casting was a success in that it sort of made the viewer want to fall for these characters. Of course, we all fall for Mr. Knightley in the end, but these characters do their part I think as Jane Austen intended, so that we too could be oblivious to the true feelings of the characters

  • Same here=)

  • how funny to read of one of Jane Austen's gentlemen described as a "complete player."

  • @sydneynotaustralia ... Your very welcome... Emma at last feels shamed, and so she should as Knightley says " Badly done Emma.... badly done indeed...."

I love all the version of EMMA but I must say this is my favourite one now... With Kate Beckinsale/Mark Strong a very close 2nd...

The very best of regards from a Wet Windy Wales UK :0)x

  • @sydneynotaustralia

And THAT attitude, ladies and gentlemen, is why so many women end up with Mr Wrong.

  • @policemanaaron I dont think Frank Churchhill is a bad person ..what he did was very wrong but I dont think Jane ended up with Mr. Wrong lol

  • @sydneynotaustralia i find the way he dismounts his horse to be absolutely adorable :)

  • @kicksforlife oh my gosh, i know! i forgot how funny it was when he did. he leapt off that thing like a champion. :)

  • I thought that with Paltrow's Emma, the comment to Mrs Bates seemed really malicious. In this version it seems more like Emma just speaks with out thinking to try to diffuse an awkward situation and regrets it instantly, so I am more willing to forgive this Emma for acting like a total B.

And Frank Churchill is a slimy toad.

  • @soappoisoning I agree it flows much better here and is more something we can relate to, I am sure we have all said things we wish we could take back

  • Emma! Keep your insults to yourself! They are not welcome! Oh god Emma and frank are insufferable and annoying and frank is indiscreet.

  • Poor Miss Bates! She always tries to be soo sweet! Oh mr. Knightley!! how adorable can a person get??

  • Why is everyone looking so glum to start with, did they want to come to box hill? Even mr. and mrs elton. The insult was the final sting from the tail.

  • ok sooo they're at a picnic and had the good sense to bring servants to pour their wine for them? seriously 3 50 looked soo lazy to me

  • Wow, I really felt the sting of Emma's insult in this version. Well done!

  • Am I the only one being distressed by watching two Edmund Bertrams and both are not Edmund?! I think I like Miller better than Ritson, but maybe it's just becuse I really don't like Mr. Eton... as Edmung I liked them both!

  • @ArinyaTingilya I AGREE!! its so strange. I like Miller better. I prefered the older version of Mansfield Park

  • I think the feelings that gweneth paltrow puts into the slight to Miss Bates fits better than this one... but other than that this new version isn't bad

  • I missed the fascination with Box Hill. What is its significance?

  • Box Hill is a hill in the county where the story takes place (not sure if it is a real place but knowing Austen, it probably is.) Emma has never traveled outside her little country town and wanted to be able to see a bit of the world and Box Hill's panoramic view was the best option at the time.

  • It is a real place. Not too far from London so that it was a popular site to visit or take day trips to during the Regency period. :)

  • @Fyrewoode it is a real place :) i live there and the view from the top is stunning :)

  • found3/7 on 7/7

  • missing pt4 3/7---has the ball--boo hoo

  • wow they put that instrument in the background whenever they can....hint hint

  • pefection is........ whattt??? i couldnt quite make out wat Mr Knightley said to Emma

can someone pls tell me wat he said!! thanx heaps :)

  • i think he says perfection has clearly come to soon. In the book he does say perfection should not have come quite so soon

  • thank you so much :)

  • I love how nobody likes the Eltons.

  • hahh emmas dad is hilarious with his expressionsXD

  • I HATE Mrs. Elton...

  • The BBC iPlayer cut out the bit when Emma insults Miss Bates, so I didn't hear what she said, so glad I found it on here.

I thought Emma was quite bitchy from the first episode. Poor Miss Bates

  • I love the musical score....how sad when Emma goes a bit too far and offends poor Miss. Bates...

  • I love all of Miss Bates' thoughts haha. She's so sweet :)
