@mastergradeone think of it as Travis's thought process. If you remember, he's writing all of this down in his diary. He's acting like he's giving a speech and making a stand for himself by writing in the diary, but no one will ever see it.

Reason he's looking away from the camera..ab libbed*sp.. Just one of those things that worked and the camera happened to still be rolling during cuts.. google that shit or watch the director's cut..with commentary.. The movie rocked as well as the soundtrack to it..
