My own father grew up in America in just these conditions, maybe worse. His mother died when he was 2 yrs old, his brother just 1 yr old. At age 8 and 6 the boys would wait for the milkman to deliver milk, and steal it in order to have something in their stomachs. Their father, my grandfather, was a drunk. Not pretty, but it happened (still happens) more than most people care to think about.

my grandpa is Netherland/spain who come to Indonesia when Netherland still Indonesia's enemy. My grandpa has 2 sisters and 3 brothers. The Dutch took 1 of his sister & 2 of his brothers away from him when they know who he is. He still teen that time, with his 2 youger siblings, a little sister and a little brother. It's amazing - when I saw this film in my teens, Malachy was scum to me, but then when I got older, I began to think "what turned him into an alcoholic though?" losing kids, never being able to eat properly, shitty money, not being able to find work, living in horrible conditions...and then pride...I think it'd drive anybody to drink...

There is a great film called "The McCourts of New York" that you have to see. Also "Tis", and "Teacher Man" are two of Franks other books and are fantastic as well.
