@Hume77 There are no reported accounts or even claims of P-47 destroying battleships or cruisers, which the Ju-87 did. A late war plane taking on lightly armored targets doesn't compare in the ground attack role to an early war dive bomber's ability to deliver heavier ordinance on target. The Stuka took down Belgian forts, French bunkers, and Russian ships. The P-47 excelled in air superiority (against a vastly outnumbered and collapsing foe) and strafing soft targets.
Actually, Rudel in his book said that before the Russians entered Germany, he regarded his work as a kind of "sport." That changed when the Russians entered the Fatherland.

I ordered Stuka Pilot on Amazon a while back (Rudel's autobio) and it had some incredible photos (and lots of them) but they deleted a lot of the text it seems ( I remember reading the full version long ago). Maybe it was too controversial. I'm mainly interested in the Stuka as a beautiful plane anyway, not a Nazi symbol. @tranmere789 You're correct, there's probably a ton of overclaiming in Rudel's history. Whether or not a target was truly destroyed is pretty hard to tell from the air, especially when you are trying to get out of there alive. Even the Soviets wanted him for charges of something in the neighborhood of 400+ tanks they claim he destroyed. So even if the number isn't exact, its still HUGE!
One would trust Rudel more than american or british historians yet alone russian ones. Everyone added some numbers to their kill ratio during the war but Rudel told mainly the truth. Stalin didn't give bounties on just anyone.
AFVs, particularly medium or heavy tanks, were probably the most difficult targets for aircraft to attack in WWII. Given the more realistic historical assessments detailed for Normandy and Kursk, objective analysis shows why aircraft attempting to attack armour in WWII faced several major hurdles.
Russian IL-2 pilots were biggest liars. Now it seems that hardly 5-10% of these Luftwaffe, RAF and USAF claims about destroyed enemy tanks are true. 1st victim of war is always the truth.
They are credited with ‘wreaking havoc amongst Soviet armour’ and the destruction of hundreds of Soviet tanks in this battle. On 8th July 1941, Hs 129s are credited with destroying 50
T-34s in the 2nd Guards Tank Corps in less than an hour. There is some evidence that 2nd Guards Tank Corps took heavy casualties on 8th July, but 50 tanks appears to exceed their total losses form all causes.
German pilots didn't tell the truth. They didn't destroy at all so many russian tanks they claimed.
In fact total Soviet tank losses in operation Citadel amounted to 1 614 tanks totally destroyed, the vast majority to German tanks and assault guns. Further detailed research has shown air power only accounted for 2-5% of Soviet tanks destroyed in the battle of Kursk. This equates to at most around 80 tanks. Again, even if this is a low estimate, where are the hundreds of tanks destroyed by German ground attack aircraft?

Also the tactic of American pilots waiting until the German pilots were on approach to land, jumping them and then calling themselves, "aces". T-34s in the 2nd Guards Tank Corps in less than an hour. There is some evidence that 2nd Guards Tank Corps took heavy casualties on 8th July, but 50 tanks appears to exceed their total losses form all causes.
German pilots didn't tell the truth. They didn't destroy at all so many russian tanks they claimed.

Further detailed research has shown air power only accounted for 2-5% of Soviet tanks destroyed in the battle of Kursk. This equates to at most around 80 tanks. Again, even if this is a low estimate, where are the hundreds of tanks destroyed by German ground attack aircraft?

Through the Battle of Kursk, he destroyed 100 russian tanks and what a lot of people don't known is that Rudel shot down 9 enemy planes with he himself never being shot down by another pilot. Rudel is one of only 27 Luftwaffe men to be awarded with the knights cross, with oak leaves, swords and diamonds.

Rudel destroyed the equivalent of a soviet armored corp and battle fleet with his various Stukas. I doubt his record will ever be topped ! A famous general once said he would rather have Rudel on his team than another division ! Hartman was top ace at 352 and after his POW time went on to help rebuild he postwar Luftwaffe.

@engaurd yep, rudel was a nazi for his whole life,
he was snapped up right away by the americans and helped develop their own tactics on fighting. The A-10 pilots often read his book "stuka pilot"
the real shame is how Hartmann rotted in the USSR for several years before finally being let go.
