Why do people keep comparing Broderick and Wilder? One was a movie and the other was an actual musical all the way through. They were two completely different portrayals of the same character and I personally loved both of them. I'm sure Gene Wilder would have rocked the shit singing because he has vocals but the original MOVIE didn't call for that. In The original 1968, Bialystock stood out more to me while in 2005 it was more Blooms film/musical. Idk just my opinion.
@doryslovespeace I Agree. Gene Wilder has a great voice, but I suppose because I am used to Broderick I could not imagine Wilde in the musical. Do not get me wrong! I loved the original film, but the charater changed alot.
@awbananna I agree, the 1968 version portrayed Bloom as an guy good only at accounting and completely socially withdrawn, comparatively Mattew Broderick's Bloom comes off more as a very sheltered and smart young man that's just always played it safe and never even tried to do anything but accounting, but secretly WANTS to be more. In essence its the difference between a man becoming more of a man and a boy in a man's body becoming a complete man. Also, I liked Jon Lovitz Mr. Marks.
but the 1968 version was not in a musical format and could be considered two seperate films and shows, i have seen both but personally prefere the musical version, and in reference to mattew boderick being leo was to the musical production and not he film.
I realize that, but I was just addressing the fact that you thought, or it sounded like you thought, that there was no previous productions of the movie before the Broadway show or the 2005 version.
I think his acting was pretty good for the character, given the character's bland personality. In other movies he's wonderful, so I think it was less an error or a sub-par performance on his part and more of a character choice.
I don't really think so. I think his character lacks the neurotic-ism needed to portray Leo. Gene Wilder had it, that Jewishness to him. Matthew Broderick just doesn't have it.
was that the one in dublin :D i saw it on closing night. Most fantastic cast ever(the guy who did leo and max where just...WOW...espcially leo and that squeky voice...lol)
i know right! we watch glory in school and 1st period came out dazzled! i asked my friend what happen.. her answer was "Col. Robert Gould Shaw happened" I never laughed so hard!
Oh and there is a difference between the Broadway album and the Motion Picture album, this comes from the Broadway. There a just a few differences but they are both awesome! :)
What's funny is his boss in the accounting firm is named Mr. Marks. I took an accounting course and the teacher's name was Mr. Marks too! Although he wasn't a Certified Public Asshole like Leo's boss.
Aw... I love this song. And it only makes it better by being sung my Matthew. He is truly amazing and talented. Gotta love his puppy-dog eyes too. Heh.

... Wasn't that not a musical anyway? I mean, I don't know exactly when that one was made, but I know the straight one was sometime in the sixties.
