homage to John Coltrane and his rendition of broadway musical, "My Favorite Things"...Check out Coltrane's version and then listen to Kool & the Gang version. Its the TRUTH!
Parliment/funkadelic and George Clinton was hard funk in the beginning. Kool and the Gang ushered in contemporary funk. This album was solid funk y'all. Yeeeah!!!
I was one of those young guys influenced by this cut. Khalis definetly had a style of his own. When I heard this back in 74 I started playing tenor sax and haven't put it down since.
I got a Hitachi (get this!) a cassette recorder, am/fm combo for Christmas in '74. I recorded songs I liked off the local AFRS station, SCN 790 Pacific/1420 Atlantic, in the former Canal Zone. I just caught the tail end of this one at the end of DJ Joe Krokus' show and it has always stuck in my mind. It wasn't until today, that I heard the first 3:45 of this song, 35 years later! Truly a vintage classic, thanks for posting!
Have to agree-one of Khalis Bayyan (Ronald Bell) best solos-though he was influenced by Trane he had a distinct sound of his own that influenced many horn players back then and created a gateway for them to jazz giants such as Coltrane and Joe Henderson
When I was a kid back in 1974 my uncle had a stack of albums and I picked this album Light of Worlds out of the stack and I played this album and to this day this is my favorite album of all times.
"Light of Worlds" was just an incredible album by the Gang. "Higher Plane and of course, "Summer Madness" were my favorite songs on the album, but "Street Corner Symphony" allowed Kool and The Gang to demonstrate their incredible musical talents. Khalis Bayyan's tenor solo is one of the greatest, if not the greatest sax solo in R&B. He is simply a genius, a term that's granted all too often these days. Khalis and Coltrane were my inspiration to play tenor.
I agree...but these young kids will have to learn how to dance in platforms like we did back in the 70's...oh, yeah, and what about polyester???? LOL...I miss the 70's...I bought this album when I was just 13, now I am 47!!!!
Gotta find "Rhyme Time People" and "Higher Plane" from this LP.Of course "Summer Madness" is the classic from Light Of Worlds.Sax solo is 2nd only to Maceo Parkers "Soul Power 74"

I don't know if people knew when I mentioned MFT on an earlier response, that I know exactly what you're talkin' about.
And the way the chords all fall in together is a constant delight.

This is the REAL Kool and the Gang. So nice to know this band is still appreciated.
Who's Gonna Take the Weight is one of my favorites but I think the message of Love and Understanding puts that as number 1.

I love James, but I'm sure George Clinton would've had something to say about that...Parliament/Funkadelic scared the hell out of a lot of folks...
