hear is an idea. if the hole in your box is too small, run the cable through the space between your cab and your box. no more cutting cable and everyone is happy.
That's not going to work. You broke the coax shielding so now your gonna have all kinds of RF leakage. You need to run one continuous piece of RG-8 and crimp and soldier the ends on.
don't listem to the haters Tyler. u r new at this. Google CB Radio antenna install and I'm sure u can find a whole bunch of great ways to do it. I'd help u if like u lived near me. lol. I've installed a bunch. Last one I had was on the glass on the back of my truck. It worked great and didn't stand out.
I miss my CB. My buds and I used to use those like cell phones. I should put it back in my truck just for the hell of it. I don't know anyone that has 1 anymore tho so no one to talk to
Also, I know you said you have a new set up anyway, but don't ever patch up CB coax using two different types of coax like you did here. It causes a mismatch and looses efficiency.
It's always best to install the antenna in the middle of the vehicle and above the roof line. When you can't put it on the roof you can still try and put it somewhere in the middle. This is because the body of the vehicle acts as a reflector, if you put the antenna on one side of a car it's transmissions will be directional.
TOP loaded antennas are more efficient on transmit out of bottom and centre loaded but they dont normally take high power output, over 500watts not that i think you'd ever need anymore than that.
Because you are installing the antenna below the roof line, It is best to install a top loaded antenna (which i think you have) that way the coil isnt surrounded by metal to interfere with the signal.Joining coax isnt the best idea you can loose signal through bad shielding, and using 2 different types can also effect preformance. Getting a good SWR is also important as you loose power in transmission with a high SWR they say 1.5 is acceptable but if you can get it lower the better.
@TheMrFireFighter1992 all depends on who you ask, some ppl say bolt ons are better because you get a better connection to the ground where as the magnets dont have that connection. right now i have a setup simular to this with the bolt on mount and it works just fine. buddy of mine drove down the road, after a mile i couldnt hear him anymore but he could still hear me crystal clear. we both have the same radio but he has a mag mount with a steel whip
Did it work at all? Did you make any contacts? This is very funny and I understand you was new to antenna installation. As long as you learn to do it right. We all made mistakes and hopefully learn from them! Gotta love that fat rg8 from the good ol days. Rg 8 is not really any good for anything but jumpers my opinion. I use rg213 for anything mobile and lmr 400 for base. I detest the skinny stuff.
@skipshooter782342 got it all done different now. new radio, new antenna and a new cable thats all one piece! lol talked with my buddy i lost him at about a mile but he could still hear me 100% clear
Kid a Local CB shop will help you do everything... GO THERE! They will run the right cable and install it properly, up your radio wattage and adjust your antenna the way you need it. OR if you go to a few truck stops and ask around I am sure someone might help if they do give them some cash for their time.
see i got my antenna mounted right in front of my toolbox and its ran underneath of the box and over the lip of the bed and back behind the cab and through the door and ran under the carpet cuz my radio is mounted right under my radio lol. nice wireing bub
@brandonkr there should be some rubber grommets on the under side of your truck or if its going on your roof you could go though the third brake light then run it above your head liner and make its way down.
@eerrbb256 i wheel it and it got taken out by a tree so i upgraded to a 102" whip on a mag mount but now i have no cb so i have no antenna. i never used the cb
the mount and the antenna dont come together. you have to search 4' cb antenna and just shuffle through the results and find a cheaper one and my mount was just a mirror mount for a big rig and i just took off the backing plate. you may be able to find a mount that comes with wire like my tri magnet mount came with wire and all.
yah you need to see my setup. i got a stryker 490 its a ham radio that puts out 150 watts . but you have to have your papers from fcc to have one of those
Splicing 2 pieces of coax - 'bad'. The rust where your whip MUST be cleaned off. Tafe it apart and use a wire brush and clean ALL of the rust off. I would use a 5 ft firestick on it - or a 102 inch steel whip. I would also mount the antenna at the other end of the bed AWAY from the cab. Route the coax under the lip of bed and attach with nylon straps. NOT thru a hole of cut sheet metat; it will eventually cut into the coax with road vibrations. AND replace your tires. Nice video...
Splicing is the worst thing you can do, Mixing coax cable the second worst, also you should have remove the paint to get the best ground you can, also run a cable to the frame for ground. Not tell you what to do, just some advice.
no. they were like 20$ at radio shack online but they dont carry them any more. ive ordered one from 2 different sites already and come to find out 2 weeks later they no longer carry it anymore even tho it said in stock on their page
Just trying to help. Your antenna should always be mounted in the center of the truck. Your RF waves pull toward the metal. With that kind of antenna it's best to have a tool box to push you out a couple feet from the cab and mount it to the center of the tool box. Make an L bracket on the back side of the tool box and put it on the back of it next to the top.
Or just get a mag mount and put it on the cab. Your rf will pull down and out that way. There is a reason you don't put metal in a micro wave, RF waves pulls to it. Most of your RF is wasted into the back of your cab never going out into the air like it should.
i never even thought about all these factors when i installed that antenna but now i am going to be redoing this. i bought a new antenna 102" whip and im going to put it in the center.
102" whip is the best car antenna made. All antennas are 102"s but are shrunk down with a wound up coil. If you take your black antenna and take off the plastic cover there will be a wire that is wound up to make it shorter. that is 102"s of copper. This causes antenna rf loss but gives you a shorter antenna with a good swr. It will work best all streched out strait. be sure to use the spring that comes with it for the best swr on the cb band. radioshack sells them.Just trying to help.
I mean use the spring That comes with the 102" whip. it is part of the antenna and adds to the length for perfect swr. Good luck and sorry for all the typing.
yes you will get out ok. But you will notice it hears better from the front of your car or what ever way you are pointed. And it will talk better toward the front of your car in the direction you point. when you get a weak signal turn your car around and test it. You should notice about 2 s units drop in signal.
thanks for all the help. radio shack actually does not sell the 102" whips anymore i checked in store and online the biggest one in store was like 6' fiberglass and it shows up online but it says out of stock so im guessing they stopped selling them. so i ended up getting it from some online store called gdi electronics i ordered it on the 29th it was 29$ and they still havent shipped it =( and i dont think it come with a spring
It will work without the spring with about 1.8 to a 2.0 swr. Without the spring is for 10 meters and with the spring it is for 11 meters. 11 meters is the cb band. with the spring is should have close to 1.1 to 1.2 swr.
hm sounds like a watt/swr meter to me, see if he had a jumper, its about 2 to 3` long that hooks between ur radio and the meter there should be a calibrate/set line on rt side of meter. key the mike and tune the meter to that line, make shure the switch is on fwd then switch it to rev then key the mike again, tht should b ur swr`s, if it is under 1.5 ur ok,it also may b a watt meter.hey put up the base antenna and get a power supply, lots of fun if there is people arund u on the radio
ill have to make a video of it. maybe ill redo all my wiring and add in this meter thing. idk if there was a jumper because he had this all taken apart years ago and i dont even know if he ever used this antenna mate! i found it in the original box. he was the type of guy that would just buy stuff because it looked cool! haha. that old base antenna he had was at least 15 years old and in sad shape so i dont have it and i dont have another radio to hook up here at my house
drew there is noway to tell if ur radio is operating good unless u get a watt/swr meter in line to see whats going on. on putting 2 antennas on the same radio u need whats called a cophasing harness, that is 2 cables that run into one connector (pl259), n a ideal world the antennas have to be 102" apart being a 1/4 wave.not possable on most vechicals 18 wheelers can get close but normaly not worth the money, most r just for looks.one good antenna with a good ground system will do u fine.
oh well i dont think im going to put up 2 antennas anyways dont have the money right now. when going through some of my grandpas old stuff i found some cb stuff (he was real into this cb stuff he even had like a 20 foot fiberglass antenna on his roof back in the day) but i found this johnson antenna mate its got like a little meter that says swr on it it also has a tune, load, and a set nob on it and 2 switches one says fwd/rev and the other says out/in would this tell me whats going on?
but if u put 2 antennas they have to be the same antenna and must match, and u realy need to get a swr meter to check the antenna out. remember ur dealing with a transmitter not just a peice of wire.ive seen many a radio burnt up from high swr
i heard somewhere that if you put 2 antennas too close to each other they will cancel each other out not sure if thats true or not but i didnt want to waste my money on another antenna and another mount and all just to find out they wont work, and i do have a smaller truck so i didnt want to mess with it. what is an swr meter? and how much would one cost?
its not that big of a problem out in the woods. i was going to put another one on the other side but just didnt have the money or the know how, i dont know much about cb radio's just how to hook them up to the battery and where to plug the antenna in!
not atall a good idea to put 2 peacees of coax together like this, way to many chances of swr`s going crazy and that means no getting out and burning up ur radio, and WATER will get on the coax where he spliced t,granted ive seen it done but only in a emergency.another thing is u realy need to run a ground wire from the ant mount to the frame, this will help stop motor noise in the radio.,best bet dig down buy 1 peice of coax with 2 pl-259`s (end connector)
hmm i have not had any problems with mine. the connections are soldered together so it gets a good connection and i made sure not to touch the 2 diffrent conductors together. i also used a massive amount of electric tape around the soldered connection thus providing a water tight seal. and i do have a bonding jumper going from the gnd to the bed so where i have the antenna mount screwed in its getting a ground
doesnt cutting the wire make the antenna get as good of reception or does it not matter? I am afraid my neighbors are going to cut my wire so i just want to check that i can fix it if they do cut it
so ur just runnin the 4 watts then, well i suppose thts ok cos u have a decent antenna there, some polystyrine painted in black taped to the back of the cab should stop the bangin noise
ive seen people use a small section of garden hose to protect the antenna from hitting the cab.most of these people used a 102" stainless steal whips with a heavy duty spring and thats by the way is the best antenna made for cb, it is the only antenna that can get a full 1/4 wave, and thats what you want every other antenna made is trying to be as good as a 102",they been around for over 50 years and still the best for cb,and there not very pricy either, rat shack still carrys them! amazing
Yeah swr must not be good .

but if u put 2 antennas they have to be the same antenna and must match, and u realy need to get a swr meter to check the antenna out. remember ur dealing with a transmitter not just a peice of wire.ive seen many a radio burnt up from high swr
but good luck

i heard somewhere that if you put 2 antennas too close to each other they will cancel each other out not sure if thats true or not but i didnt want to waste my money on another antenna and another mount and all just to find out they wont work, and i do have a smaller truck so i didnt want to mess with it. what is an swr meter? and how much would one cost?

you should also put on another antenna to make it match and if u have a radio that has am fm settings then u can have two dif freuecy

not atall a good idea to put 2 peacees of coax together like this, way to many chances of swr`s going crazy and that means no getting out and burning up ur radio, and WATER will get on the coax where he spliced t,granted ive seen it done but only in a emergency.another thing is u realy need to run a ground wire from the ant mount to the frame, this will help stop motor noise in the radio.,best bet dig down buy 1 peice of coax with 2 pl-259`s (end connector)

hmm i have not had any problems with mine. the connections are soldered together so it gets a good connection and i made sure not to touch the 2 diffrent conductors together. i also used a massive amount of electric tape around the soldered connection thus providing a water tight seal. and i do have a bonding jumper going from the gnd to the bed so where i have the antenna mount screwed in its getting a ground

doesnt cutting the wire make the antenna get as good of reception or does it not matter? I am afraid my neighbors are going to cut my wire so i just want to check that i can fix it if they do cut it

not sure i dont think it makes a difference if you cut it and soder it back together just as long as your 2 different conductors dont touch

get a swr meter and keep it in line. thats the only way to tell the swr`s r high

so ur just runnin the 4 watts then, well i suppose thts ok cos u have a decent antenna there, some polystyrine painted in black taped to the back of the cab should stop the bangin noise
thescallykiller 2 years ago
yeah during regular driving it does not rlly hit the cab its just occasionally out in the woods
DrEwBaBy625 2 years ago
ive seen people use a small section of garden hose to protect the antenna from hitting the cab.most of these people used a 102" stainless steal whips with a heavy duty spring and thats by the way is the best antenna made for cb, it is the only antenna that can get a full 1/4 wave, and thats what you want every other antenna made is trying to be as good as a 102",they been around for over 50 years and still the best for cb,and there not very pricy either, rat shack still carrys them! amazing

yeah but idk if i want a 9 and a half foot antenna on my truck. did find a kit on ebay tho that wasn't too pricey. like 30$ but i dont really need it
