  • I'm gonna cover this song on my channel. I swear.

  • I'm not black but black people are genius who have pioneered and influenced many genres of music. Soul, rock''n'roll, reggae, hip hop, pop, rap to name some. Wished soul stuck around a lot longer but great Fruit for the soul RESPECT!

  • ►► @LighteningLazer96... you are so right... the current crop of record producers wasted and trashed the legacy of Motown... sad.

  • i hate when my dad works the nightshift, i miss him like if he's dead

  • Were the vocals really live?

  • @norrisonthespot Nope, there's no live singing just lip-synch action. Nevertheless it's one of the greatest tunes ever.

  • Dedicated to My Father

If I only had five minutes the day you passed away, I would have had time to tell you all the things I needed to say.I never got to tell you how much you mean to me, Or that you were the best dad.

The last time that I talked to you. I wish I would have known.

I would have said I love you,

and kept you on the phone.

If I only had five minutes,

    the morning you passed away.

I’d give you one last hug so tight

If your Dad is Alive tell him how much he means to you

  • @kaguvi777

  • When I was in college I worked at a store that piped in the local soft rock station over the loudspeakers. On the days I worked late closing they would often play this song and because of the name of the song the deejay would make some cheezy reference to people working third shift.

  • muito loko

  • i love this song it was my father's fav song.

  • Great song. Didn't realize this was the commadores and hadn't heard for twenty odd years. Good stuff.

  • Class is Class It shines in platinum gold and silver. This is pure sweet heart and soul sweet rock in music.

  • What can't MUSIC be that good nowadays ;-(

  • this is great when black men were somewhat civil. We need to re-train black people they're getting out of line and resorting to thier primate instincs.

  • @thincow12 Should have started with a capital T and spell instincts correct. Poor for a scientist and doctorate.

  • @derekg31 please, just enjoy this fine music. I actually love black people, so much that I think everyone ought to own one.

  • Comment removed

  • @thincow12 I did not comment on black people only your grammar. I am surprised a man of your stature being racist. Hope that other scientists have a different view, this may come back and bite you in the ass some day (Primate instincts)

  • almost as old as me...

  • legendary tunes

  • How could anyone dislike this, great music of the eighties.

  • @LighteningLazer96......You're so right. These men sing beautifully (no arrogant slobs with stupid bling rapping, no auto tune, no slutty looking women grinding in high heels). I don't know what the hell happened...there was doowop, and soul and then something took a wrong turn.

  • @Moonchalice and they're singing playback here.

  • @Moonchalice SAD SAD SAD HEAR DAT!

  • @Moonchalice

    My thoughts exactly!!!

It's a disgrace when people say that hiphop and r'n'b evolved out of that classic black music... those songs by the Commodores, Martha and the Vandellas, the whole Detroit music scene and the Phillysound were just awesome.

  • @Moonchalice I play bass and you are right...somewhere, at the start of the 90's, music just took a wrong turn. I remember 60's, 70's and 80's funk, soul, R n B and rock and roll....no rap, no bling, no slutty girls, musicians and singers, for the most part were polite, no attitudes, foul language, and all the crap we got now.

  • @MusicLover1701 It's always nice to find like-minded people. I was married to a bass player when I was younger. I believe I have an ear for it.......I love this bass player. Your comment about politeness especially caught my notice. People who make songs like "Bitches ai'nt nothing but tricks and hos" kinda upset my sense of world order. Kinda like Sharia law does. Whoo hoo....it's coming....the big storm is coming.

  • @MusicLover1701 Oh hey, if ya wanna feel better.search Earth, Wind and Fire. That'll cheer you up =).

My favorite is "Sing A Song"

  • @Moonchalice One word. Cameo...

  • @Moonchalice yeah you started breeding

  • @americannable You need to ask yourself what makes you want to say mean things to other people. I watched your video. I wanted to give you a shot. It wasn't uplifting, actually it was sickening. Keep going there and you will soon be lost. Please don't bother me again, cause I won't respond. You had your shot and you missed.

  • @Moonchalice oh my god, you sound so ridiculouss. i dont even know what your talking about, i dont have a video. and how is my smug any different than yours. not everything is uplifting, grow up.

  • @americannable I just watched your Occupy Portland video. Good stuff. I didn't know how rampant these name tag violations were. The police work for the public, and need to be accountable for their actions, not just as a police force, but as individuals.

  • @cubancigarcrisis thats not my video

  • Muito bom! Grande musica!

  • What showmanship on the stage, along with a great performance. You don't get that today.

  • The very best song of the 80's. Thanks for posting.

  • Isso que é música !

  • Nossa no ano em que nasci e eu amo The Commodores !

  • NOTHING BETTER THAN GOOD OLD SOUL...I personally don't care for most rap & don't consider it "soul music". I call it attitude crap.

The Commodores had a great sound...Where is the younger version of this music?

    Ya know...New old soul.....smile

  • Jackie,Jackie..Hey,what you doing now? Some great times and memories:)

  • Amazing song! One of my favourites.

  • best at det best !!! eller c'est la meilleurs musique que j'ais entendu !!!

    fantastisk !

  • having had a mobile disco, watching the ladie,s getting soul from these sounds say,s it all,at the end of the day it would fill the floor at any do,makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up,and this is what matter,s it will still be playing on the dance floor,s of year,s to come,it speak,s for itself.

    take care all.

  • I wish I could have been there. This was recorded the year I was born.

  • @Akosuaification Wow. That makes me feel old. :)

  • @cjartiste Oops...lol. Sorry. :)

  • I Love Dat !

  • Like the song but HATED how a lot of bands lip sync'd and fake-played their instruments for these TV show appearances. No mics on the drums, keyboards aren't even plugged in, and the drummer isn't even playing along with the drums on the record (check out his drum fill @ 3:04). And how does a full band simply "fade out" a song?!? LOL

  • @Scott00086 then request your money back!!!!!

  • @Scott00086 LOL I agree, but this is definitely a different version than the record.

  • @JavonteTreble

    normal - it's live

  • @schmidskatz LoL...this isnt live. What do you think those pearl damping pads on the drumkit are for ;) Also none of the instrumantalists have a chord nor a wireless device attached. Still love the commodores but live it ain't.

  • 19 people work day shift with the bosses!

  • to atlanta5321 how you gone say black music suck when u listen to the commodoers like really dude get the fuck outta here, and u talk alot of shit on the internet huh

  • @jtmack336 wow are u retarded? Just cause a white man makes a judgment on black culture doesnt give u the right to immediately assume hes generalizing or hating an entire peoples. If you actually read my post you'd realize I dislike todays black music and I love this type of music. But aparently ur not even capable of presenting me with an argument so ill let u get back to ripping ur bong u half assed idiot

  • what a great song

  • I was in Europe in 87'. I was on the US Junior Chess team. I was about 10. Mad crush with a girl from Maastrich (in Holland). I had a tape player and headphones. I put one in her ear and one in mine. We played this song over and over as we practiced. Good times. (It may have been 86 now that I think of it)

  • You spelled "They'r" wrong. Its Their...

    Batboy_Wonders

  • like totally dude, "Totally" forgot about Kurt Cobain. The guy worked the nightshift, just no one knew about it.

    Batboy_Wonders

  • I completely agree with 1HRJR. Yo atlanta dude go listen to your shitty "pop music"!

  • danke,i remember that song,vielen,vielen dank

  • danke

  • 17 dislikes?!? How can you dislike this song?

  • Song makes me cry.

  • @chikers17 if this makes you cry try listening to ben by micheal jackson that will have you in hysterics lol

  • A HIGHLIGHT OF THE EIGHTIES..........there HAD to be one.....

  • i HAD THAT BOB AND CLARA SCHUMANN OVER THE T

  • This song still gets cranked up when it plays in my random playlist. Truly one of the best songs from that time.

  • Luv it!!!"

  • what a great song. too bad blacks dont know play good music anymore. my bluntness may offend u but its a universal truth. the black influenced rap culture has degraded any standard in recording arts and raped us blind of any backbone to reject it without being called a racist or ignorant. well i guess im a racist then cause i hate black music today, but i love this shit.

  • @atlanta5321 Completely agree 100%. Look no further than the trash called Soulja Boy, Busta Rhymes etc.

What happened to The Commodores, Marvin Gaye, The Isley Brothers....those were the days black people actually knew how to sing.

  • @atlanta5321 Couldn't of said it better myself brother.

  • @atlanta5321 'Wah, wah, wah...blacks aren't making music I can enjoy'. You and your brethren should get off your lazy asses and stop waiting on "blacks" to entertain you. Thankfully unlike you, I know where black music lives. Safe at home in the church away from patronizing crybabies with entitlement to complexes.

  • @1HRJR you must be special. did your mommy give you your meds this morning? you completely missed the point of my post and diverted into ur own rant. my mere observation offends you because its true and your only way to deal with it is to turn it into some delusional self entitlement rant. i dont even know what you're going on about. but once again ill objectively state that blacks have lost talent in the music world. ur comments wont change my opinion so i have to assume u want my dick

  • @atlanta5321 You need a clue and a dictionary. Nothing about your statement was “objective”; generalizations by nature aren’t. Angie Stone, Anthony Hamilton, Jill Scott, Calvin Richardson, Ledesi. The list goes on and on, but your exposure is limited and, yes, vanilla of course, so I wouldn’t expect you to know these names. But apparently you are a self-appointed expert and have declared an expiration date for "black" music from your cave dwelling.

  • @1HRJR Hey fuckstick, Please continue suckin me off and diverting the subject so that u can VALDATE WHATEVER point u wanna make with urself. Im sure it has much deeper roots than just the explicit nature of your comments.U obviously r a racist and very insecure at the opinions of anyone toward blacks. No one gives 2shits about the underground shit you listen to while ur fuckin ur goat around midnight. I will reiterate: Mainstreamblack music has lost all its talents and continues to get worse.

  • @atlanta5321 Boy you’re daft! Stereotype “black” music then accuse me of being racist. Label artists you know nothing of “underground” because they aren’t included in the limited rotation of songs played on the pop stations you listen to, all the while complaining about music being played on said stations. Guess that’s what happens when relatives breed! Oh, and lest I forget: Kem, Monica, Eric Benet, Fantasia, Angie Stone…more “underground” black artists.

  • @1HRJR Seriously who says "daft" lmao. Quit jerkin yourself off. Youre not even capable to present an argument to my first comment. Youve dwelled into some arguement not even relevant to my first topic. While youve spent these past few days struggling at your computer for some way to spew your racist shit, roughly 20 people messaged my 1st comment agreeing with me that black music sucks today. ur alone. And it does. And yes it is their job to entertain me. Theyr suppose to be fkin entertainers

  • @atlanta5321

If black music "sucks" because of a few shitty rap artists then I guess "white music" sucks because of Kesha, Avril Lavigne, Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, etc. See how easy it is to stereotype? Pop music sucks, period. Regardless of the color of the artist. If you're judging rap by the likes of Soulja Boy then of course you're going to be disappointed. Go listen to some Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Common, Nas, Wu Tang, Tupac, etc. And stop being a douche and just enjoy some good music.

  • @capncrunch10yes u are correct. white music sucks too. i was just referring to blacks because of the context of my the issue I raised of comparing this style of music to todays

  • @capncrunch10 btw theres no logic in ur argument at all. i simply do agree white music sucks today too but not based on ur illogical false refute. iflack music sucks today white music could be good ot vice versa. but in my opinion all music mainstream sucks today, and you can give me hell for what im about to say but I seriously belive the hip hop movement in the mid 80s was the beginning of its decline. Rap music or hip hop embraces laziness and pretensiouspseudo-sophitication (nas). Its crap

  • @1HRJR

Agreed. This guy is just a douche who thinks there's no more good music because all he hears on the radio is shit. All the while completely ignoring all the great artists out there that don't get a lot of air time but can easily be found right here on this very site. Hell, there's still people making great slow tunes like this one (Babyface, Mary J Blige, Mariah Carey, etc).

  • @atlanta5321 I kind of have to agree with you, but I also must say that I think your just listening to the wrong black artist . I know its a shame that you have to search for good music, but in this day and age that is what you have to do search for good music. I know that back in the day there was good music coming out everyday and that is still true today good music still comes out everday, you just have to do the work to find it is all. By the way I don't think what you said is racist at all.

  • Who sings the first verse?

    Who sings the 2nd verse?

  • Motown music at its best.....thanx Lionel and co. you still the best..

  • Lionel Richie was the lead singer

  • Wrong instrument they focused. this sound is not the bass. it's a synth prophet-5, including bending

  • Great Song and greatest singer...

  • Every time I listen to stuff like this it makes me want to send a terminator back in time to kill the inventor of auto-tune.

  • Who is the lead singer on this song?. He's a very talented singer, I just love his voice & his looks!!..

  • Had forgotten how good this is & where did 26 years go!!

  • @kingstuforpresident I would like to know the same thing about all those years. time really flies. I don't know about You; but after I turned 40; time flew twice as fast.

  • Great song in honor of the greatest singer ever

  • CAN;T HELP BUT WONDER WHERE HAS THE TIME GONE.

  • 17 people have no souls

  • @TheCJ2CJ 19...:(

  • ganz wunderbar

  • I wish someone hacked the mainstream media at primetime and just started blasting this on every news and radio staiton. Man i miss the old days when things were easy and there was peace, now days shit is crazy , what the hell is goin on in this world...

  • Such a pleasure!

  • Awesome performance.

  • The basslines -Keyboard or bassguitar?

  • @KjellGibson Sounds like the bass guitar has a flange on it. With a lot of basslines in the 80's, they used the flange effect.

  • @KjellGibson keyboard. no bass guitar has such a type of sustain, not even with a effect.

  • @markusoberleitner Prophet-V, from SCI Sequential Circuits. as seen on videoclip

  • @JamesonSmirnoff beats four stars out? I just laugh when cunts like you cant even write fucking "bad" words. shit man, for real.

  • definiteley in my eighties greatest

  • just sublime IMHO

  • So much class and history...I am proud to be part of it. Thank God for Memories!!!!

  • the eighties? - Nightshift by the Commodores.

  • used to watch night court.Funny.

  • For those who don't realize, the first verse is about Marvin Gaye and has a reference to his hit "What's Goin' On". The second verse is about Jackie Wilson and refers to two of his hits; "it seems like yesterday when we were workin' out" (Baby Work Out) ...."your love has lifted us higher and higher" (Higher and Higher).

  • @emmettk Who sings the 1st verse? 2nd verse? All sources seem to list Walter Orange as "the lead singer", but it's clear there are two.

  • @jwmellott Yes, the first verse is sung by Walter Orange. The second verse is J.D.Nicholas, who filled the spot left by Lionel Richie.

  • Michael Jackson is now among those living in peace on the "nightshift"

    RIP

    MJ

  • This song was wrote for the late GREAT Marvin Gaye!

  • @kimbolimbo1

Don't forget Jackie Wilson!! Marvin Gaye was great, but Jackie W. paved the way for him and others. . . .

  • i love this song-a few years ago i was taping a bunch of soul oldies and i taped this one and played it over and over again. thanks to you for posting this song-i can do it now!! i have cancer and when i get down in the dumps or am feeling horrible, i can listen to the great soul groups and singers from the good old soul days! i am 63 and it is so great to listen to these songs. thanks again to you for posting and also all the other people who do it really really helps me!!!

  • @dogcat126 I played it over and over too

  • @dogcat126 God bless and heal you, Amen

  • the Eighties were mainly cheesy apart from highlights like this

  • this song is really one of the best songs ever

  • 1st I ever hears this song saw it on my friend wall something isn't right and idk what's wrong but this song isnt that bad. Friend plz b okay!!

  • how the hell can people dislike this ? come on

  • @jrh71fzs why can't music still be this good??

  • not lip-synched. I listen to the album version very often and it's not exactly the same as this one

  • I like them better without Lionel.

  • Absolutely smooth! Thanks for keeping Jackie and Marvin's memories alive. Wish they coulda snuck a little something about Sam Cooke in there, too.

  • Who is the incredibly lovely man on the left of the screen? OMG he's beautiful.

  • Guys, this is lip-synced too. For example, the bass at 0:28-0:30. He hits one note then not the other. C'mon.

  • @mylescharles backing music maybey but dont insult the integrity of the commodores vocals dont you dare

  • @mylescharles Part of it is the audio. It is NOT lip-synced.

  • This song always reminds me o
