Enjoyed your review. I've read several Stephenson novels and I love them all. Two of my favorites are actually not cyberpunk or even science fiction, but I can't imagine any SF fan not getting into them: The Quicksilver trilogy (a swashbuckling romp through the 1700s) and The Cryptonomicon (about cryptography in modern times and in WWII). There are a lot of pages to get through, especially with the trilogy, but I could hardly put them down. They are well researched, informative and very funny.
great book, but i prefer William Gibson stories much more. More my taste than Stephenson, but still a great book.
Monalisa Overdrive, Virtual Light, All tommorows parties, and Pattern Rocognition are among my favorite of all books. Actually they are my fave books. Check out Stephensons work though, definitely worth the time to track the books down. They can be somewhat difficult to find depending on where you live. Same with the Gibson novels. Ordering online however solves that problem neatly.
I take it you like the book, that's cool, I wouldn't mind reading it one day. However, you're way off base in terms of Snow Crash inventing online gaming. Not heard of MUDs then?
Starting at 3:05, you say "Basically online gaming came from this book, because everyone else used cyberspace more as like a...it wasn't the same, this basically treats cyberspace as like a giant MMO RPG, it was never really used like that before, it was always more of like a, I don't know, something else". See, I do listen. If you knew your gaming history you'd know that was false, go look up Island of Kesmai for example. Can you see what I mean now?
I love cyberpunk and read Neuromancer late in my cyberpunk journey...it was really boring. Not for any faults in the book, but basically because all of the ideas had been lifted and copied so many times, that I never got that Wow Factor.
It's a shame, it's a good book, I've just seen it all before.
Hiro being a pizza delivery guy and the influence of the mob is probably a social commentary on the long reaching effects of mcdonaldization on big business and the way it will grow to spread out through the rest of life as we know it. Yeah Hiro Protagonist is kewl spokes.
WOW! You are so misinformed. First of all the term avatar was not invented by this book it's a hindu term which basically means incarnation. Second of all online gaming did NOT come from this book there were text based online games way before this book came out. Check your facts before your next review dude!
Try LISTENING! I didn't say it invented the word. It was the first to use to word as a representative when your on the computer. The book IS the reason when you go anywhere your icon is called your avatar.
I'm not talking about that. This book WAS very influencial on the 3d world mmo games. Numerous game designers have said so.
You got it wrong when it comes to the online gaming thing. Interesting that you limit it just to 3d world mmo games, Ultima Online doesn't count then? 3d was just a natural progression for MMOs, and graphical MMOs were a natural evolution of the text-based ones that came before it. To state Snow Crash invented online gaming is ludicrous.
Really, if you're going to review a book, especially a well-regarded fifteen-year-old book with quite an extensive following, have a script, and use some insight.
Seven minutes of you saying "This is AWESOME, DOOD!" is pretty pointless.
sorry, it was good though. it totally made me want to read it again. its one of my favorite books as well. neuromancer is also great read, although it definately doesn't have the same humor that snowcrash does. its just different. which is a good thing. have you read anything by paul di filipo? ive been wanted to read more of his, as ive only read the short story he has in the mirrorshades compilation, stone lives. recommendz!
Data. It's data. Wait? Why am I saying this? You've probably looked it up right after this review, and this is... two years old...

I dont want to spouil it for anyone but its a Sopranos like ending!!!!

Actually Snow Crash is not in the future!
Its was around the 1990's!!!
Its just an alternate reality!

1984, A brave new world, Snow crash

Snow Crash isn't a dark forboding future. Clearly people are just fine living there and like it the way it is.
blowshimselfupdude 2 years ago
I never mentioned dark or foreboding. I simply put the book amongst some of the other prophetically accurate literature.
I probably could have used Star Wars as another example but wouldn't assume the dark lord to exist literally.
Thanks for the heads up though!
