isn't the art world a bitch...and a bastard. You just want to pee in the water and be able to get away with it...Love it...Great. The Openings of any art show...are a study in posing to the extreme...love it...thanks.
Thanks James. I always look forward to your videos. I cannot believe those snoby women.t I would never buy anything from that gallery after seeing how those woman treated you. Ass holes.
James thanks for put this up it is very helpful for those of us living outside the loop. I think these works are mediocre, but at least have some interesting colors in some of them.
Thanks James. I'm a Nigerian student studying for an MA (Fine Art) in London. I have gained so much from your videos in the last week that I came across them. I dont think a lot of these galleries and artists know what you are doing for them and the free publicity you are giving to them. Please keep up the good work
no...but they really are important, they have to be at the gallery to drink their fancy imported teas and talk about the art that they could never make all day.
They go to cute art schools that cost a fortune, then they don't sell their own work, and start working at galleries...now being able to associate themselves with the art world...thus maintaining the snooty demeanor. Lots of massive insecurity, then forming clics (sp?) at school...all huddled together in their us world.
I was disappointed with this new work, although they looked slightly better without the arty crowd - probably because of Miles. The paintings looked derivative, with echoes of Gauguin, Hockney and Picasso (and Munch). There didn't seem to be much of the random blobs of paint on a flat surface that was so intriguing in his earlier work. I would have liked to have seen the drawings. Still, sterling work from you James as always, keeping us non New Yorkers up-to-date with the art scene. Thanks.
i love the way you capture the atmosphere of the NY gallery scene. It really keeps me in touch and it really affirms that i'm not missing all that much not living there anymore.Ha Ha! You really handle yourself well, when you are confronted by those "important" arrogant gallery assistants in any episode. Keep that exchange going a little more! It makes for good drama! Also, do more studio visits! I love to here what artists actually have to say and i'm sure they like the attention.
wow thanks James that was my first gallery trip. its strange i was thinking hmmm not sure i like this work but when you went beck with the empty gallery the painters were wow and came to life. Thank you ...
A couple of comments here show that the posters are unaware of the scope of Doig's work. He has always painted small paintings as well as large, numerous etching series, works on paper and movie posters an exhibition of which is on at CFA Berlin with some paintings.
@jameskalm Anyone would think it was their art, I guarantee they're wannabe known artists, but are settling for curator type jobs. The bitterness seeps from within.
I saw a Doig retro in Paris in 2008 that cmpletely changed my view on him. I think that he is a great colorist and that his compositions are now more balanced than in the past. He's really matured into a great artist; for once, the market is right. Thanks James.

This is why I don't go to openings.
Doig's work is wonderful. I just don't need to see it at a gallery. I'd rather go to his studio.

Thank you, James. Great work.
After all that crowd noise, the musical interlude starting at 8:41 was truly a nice touch.

Gosh, Thanks James!
I bet it's really hard to shoot video in the crouds. Some people looking at you like a you're dust or something.
Cheers for your struggle.

there are some nice people here, but with rising rents in the city the assholes have definitely moved into town!

From Amsterdam, thanks James for sharing this insightful view of Doig's work.
Not being there to see what's going on in the art world of NY, this is absolutely the next best thing. Wonderful.
