I think this song beats out "fine, fine line" for saddest song, because Kate and Princeton get their happy ending, but these tow don't. I feel silly, but I always tear up when I hear this one.

I agree with you that this song is the saddest.

How Rod never 'got' Nicky, which it shows that this was just a dream for him.

However it makes it sad knowing after this song that Princeton and Kate's relationship falls apart, even though it gets fixed (kinda) at the end, it's sad knowing that their relationship won't be as perfect as it was in this song.

Oh my god, Rod is so heartfelt! I especially love the London cast. This, I think, is the most emotional song in the whole musical. This duet, is not only one of the best songs in the musical, but the BEST duet. :D
