  • That sword play is intense.

  • Beautiful, thank you for sharing. I'm new to arnis, and hadn't yet encountered the idea of a curved strike. I do find the idea tremendously intriguing.

  • Because Explorer Ferdinand Magellan Simple Underestimate the

    Filipino Martial Art

    "KALI" ,"Eskrima" or "Arnis"

He died in the Battle of Mactan

  • 0:46 she walks really sexy...

  • Estrada called it arnis instead of esc/krima :3

  • I bet they had sore fingers after that!

  • 4:29 is wrong. Magellan was killed simply because he was outnumbered, didn't know the terrain and his men were exhausted.

Of course Lapu-Lapu's troop's strength should't be underestimated, by no means, but solely basing it on that fact is patriotic BS. This is the problem I often find with Filipinos, some patriotic BS that has no connection whatsoever to reality.

  • no! i will never forget this great grandmasters! mabuhay ang pilipinas! mabuhay ang mga escrimador!

  • i wonder if any elf from the north pole took interest in this since the sticks look like peppermint canes.

  • FUCK! it gives me goosebumps to see those swords at full swing..

  • wait I thought the reason why they call this style Doce Pares is because the 12 grandmasters of the different Eskrima styles refurbished the art and turned it to the now modern Eskrima...or am I wrong?

  • @tsipymusic your wrong. 12 grandemasters of escrima made a new style called doce pares, the one who made modern escrima is remy amador presas

  • Any martial art made sport goes straight down the toilet.

  • Like any martial art it has become formalized and the ART has started to surpass the MARTIAL. Once the need to use it in actual combat wanes, things like forms and patterns begin taking over. Before you know it the original meaning and application aspect is lost. They become useless drills that look impressive but don't function. To see this stuff stripped back down and used in action look up Dog Brothers. But we warned that it doesn't look nearly as flowery, but it does function.

  • Doce Pares is renowned as the best form of escrima. It helped the guy out against 7 thugs

  • I don't care about what is "renowned as the best." What is important is learning from my own experience.

  • just 7?? what if theres 8 thugs?

  • actually it is applicable.. u need to research more on the art... and it does stand a chance.. esp eskrido.. =D

  • I think the greatest thing about Escrima / Kali and up to modern Arnis is the amazing adaptability of The Phillipino style. they lookes at the chinese and japanese styles and even when the spanish arrived. the development and the whole idea of "Ok that worked better than my way, can i use it?" has made for a wonderful style. it is wonderful to see the variety of escrima. the long range, close range disarming. it is simple and as such wonderfully adaptive. i always loved it.

  • Why is it that its only Doce Pares? There are other eskrima styles that are also good and perhaps better. And also other master that were as good as Cacoy. Like for say Anciong Bacon, Timoteo Maranga, Alberto Dacayana SR, Ondo Caburnay. Other styles that are as prominent as Doce Pares is Balintawak, Lapunti, Mig-Sune-Do.

  • its true but with bbc sometimes its about the timing of the event and they just happened to do most of there research on doce pares.

  • I agree. This documentary implied that Doce Pares is solely responsible for the modernization of kali/arnis/escrima when there are, I dunno, 20 or 30 other schools around the Philippines that can make similar claims. But it's also a pretty old documentary, and people in the West are still only just beginning to take notice of FMA

  • Well, Doce Pares is the most public. It's centered in Cebu City (which is pretty public,) it has the most visible practitioners, and it's generally "established" rather than underground. Also, this was set in the '80s, during the Marcos years. I go to school in LA and there are plenty of other schools - a lot of my homies study Decampo.

Check out History Channel's "Human Weapon" and Discovery Channel's "Fight Quest" - they take in non-Doce Pares and non-Cebu schools.
