I saw her opening twice in the eighties - once for April Wine (replacing Corey Hart) and once for Kim Mitchell's Go for Soda tour. She rocked both times, and could certainly sing the screaming metal range of her original songs.

I still think Karen's one of the cooler people in rock, maybe not an incredible writer but very charismatic. And BEAUTIFUL.I met her briefly once and was honestly smitten as she talked shop to us about Kramer and Lado guitars.

I believe Lee is trying to tell us something complex yet important, by softening Metal Queen and interblending it with Mysterious Ways. Metal is a language of conflict and survival, so by softening Metal Queen, she teaches a strength which is beyond rage and a reliance upon it for motivation. Adding Mysterious Ways means there are now two expressions of Lee: Metal and Jazz. "It's alright...mysterious ways" reassures confused fans we are not forgotten, but she's moved on into a new safe space.

Sendmail7, it's not about "selling out", or of insulting a cornerstone of Canadian Metal history. In an interview she gave with Metal Hammer ( if I remember correctly ), she was asked what the main difference was between Metal and Jazz, and she said, "Subtlety." I regard Lee as not just a musician, but as a communicator. So, maybe Lee is injecting that subtlety to encourage fans to grow in our thinking, so we can keep pace with hers as she progresses in her own life. To think, and to grow.

Sendmail7, I believe Lee has unfairly suffered during her Rock years, and I think she would ignore Metal altogether, if it were not for those fans who really appreciate both her and her music. It was her heart which was broken first, after the industry turned against her after her 2Precious collaboration. Maybe, she can't play those Metal anthems in the same way again, because that pain still gets in the way. Or, maybe we are asked to review the things which matter from a new, deeper context.

fortheloveoftunes, no disrespect to Doro's fans, but after first listening to several of Doro's songs before writing this - I have to say, that Lee sings with greater power and emotional expression. It is also pointless to try and draw comparisons between Lee and other artists, because Lee holds a special magic which places her in her *own unique position*. Lee has proven herself to be a top performer who is capable of stirring tempests with Metal, and calming storms with Jazz. Lee is music!
