I think people should really, really start to listen to grunge bands. I fuckin love Alice in Chains, it's my favorite band right after Nirvana, but you gotta listen to Green River. They DID define "grunge" music, Green River should be 1, 2 Mother Love Bone, Mudhoney should be 3, Nirvana 4, next to Alice in Chains,.

I think there were two "grunge" spirits:

Rock spirit, defined by MLB

Punk spirit, defined by Green River

Kurt cobain actually had the ability to sing good, but I cant really blame people for labeling him a crappy vocalist, because he was a lazzy singer. He usually sang out of tune and only put effort in his yelling. lane used way more dubble tracking and layering in his albums than anyone else in grunge. also no one ever mentions cantrell, who actually had better range than layne. Making them a powerful duo. unfortunately cantrell never gets any credit for his singing.

They spoke about feeling and drugs which made them who they are. People just don't understand that bc everybody like songs about money, women, and cars. I hate society. you guys cannot really compare bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam with bands like Alice in Chains and Soundgarden. The whole term "Grunge" was created by the mainstream media. Nirvana is a Punk Rock band, no one referred to Nirvana as Grunge except the media. Kurt Cobain said in his journal "I love punk rock more than anything in this world". Alice in Chains and SoundGarden are Heavy Metal bands. Pearl Jam is just Alternative Rock.

The term Grunge is not really a genre, its the rock of 90's.

Nirvana was grunge, kurt might not have had the greatest voice but he wrote great lyrics, played the guitar and brought a raw emotion when he sang that no one will ever be able to copy, I think Layne had a better voice but I think Nirvana as a band meant more to the grunge era than AIC and this list is about the band not the singer.
