  • @Geespicoli Why don't you stop wasting your time insulting an awesome guy who actually does something productive with theirs?

  • WTF dude your gay lisp is so gay. Seriously, could you get any gayer?

  • first i think that your awesome as far as musical / vlog wise second i would like to formally apologize for any troll out there.... they just need a hug

  • Sometimes it's a little bit hard to get immersed in a video because a lot of the vloggers I watch, I kind of stand in awe of. I do thing it's really weird that people are so rude to vlogs that they subscribe too. People: NO ONE HAS TO VLOG FOR YOU! They don't have to make videos or do the things you say for them to do, or anything like that. We should start treating the people on YouTube with respect instead of treating them as entertainment robots.

  • Somehow you remind me of why I love (and waste so much time on) Youtube. This sounds very odd, but your reminder that videomakers are humans who have lives and are sacrificing their time here makes me better appreciate the fact that you guys bother. So thank you very much. *hat tip*

One thing that keeps me from commenting on videos, though, is the fact that I'm coming back years too late to the party. It feels strange to be telling you that you hair two years looked very nice, f'rinstance.

  • I also found you through truth or fail XD. You are awesome consider me subscribed :3.

  • I just discovered you through Truth or Fail and I really like your style. Also you have a voice I enjoy listening to. Consider me subscribed :)

  • WOW, you are a very good vlogger. I as a "consumer" ( can you technically apply that word to me seeings as I am not PAYING for a good/service ) I know I should eb doing more to promote videos/vlogs that I am lovin' (such as yours). I think we all need a reminder sometimes of just how hard YouTuber's work, and that they do it for US. I have nearly caught up on your videos (I learned about you today from ToF) and I am impressed (BTW You do have nice eyes - sorry, but it had to be said!!!)

  • I find it quite hillarious that soon after this you went to truth or fail. Therfore spreading your videos, therefore pulling me in. And you did it...by....your...self! Good on you

  • I just want to say that the only reason I don't usually share videos that I like is cuz I have no friends :P

  • ok, i wasn't supposed to be spending a whole lotta time online right now, but dang you! i like your vids sir! LOL (and i LIKEd them too) :) i'm a youtuber making vids and i totally agree - thank you for posting. peace and blessings. *jae*

  • I just have to say that your content is always super stimulating and interesting and on top of that I love how your videos are visually pleasing. As a student in architecture we're always being criticized by the presentation of our work and so I always look for a good presentation in the videos I watch. I like the colors you have in your videos and how the image is always really clear plus you're an awesome speaker. :)

  • very true, I hate it, even when it's not my video, that people comment how much they hate a video and such like, I like you're videos a lot. :)

  • Don't rain on their parade! Streisand will punish you.

  • This is all stuff I need to work on! I'm a relatively new viewer to your channel and I look forward to looking back through old videos and seeing what you make next.

  • This was an interesting perspective to hear. I always enjoy watching your videos. I don't comment very often on people's videos because of the giant squids of anger… there were several times where I got attacked viciously just for sharing my opinion on something. Ever since then I kinda gave up on commenting. But I shall keep this video in mind. x)

  • @giraffesgo Thank you! That's kind of exactly what I'm going for, which is why I made this video. I want everyone to feel like they're included in the conversation, not just me talking to them. So I appreciate that you are down with that kind of program :)

  • I often watch YouTube on the iPhone, and u can't 'like' videos through the app I use. I would like to like videos more often though.

I think a lot of the time I don't comment is because I don't think it will be noticed. Will try more. Would like to involve myself in the online community more. Would like to actually vlog one day too.

  • @liwymi Man! They should add that. I don't have a good data plan to watch videos on my phone, but I have looked through comments before and there's no "reply" feature, which frustrates me.

As for noticing comments, I can promise you, I read them all. I try to reply to as many as I can, but sometimes I get bogged down with other responsibilities or feel like I'm repeating myself. You're definitely noticed, though!

And as far as vlogging goes, all I can say is give it a shot! What's there to lose?

  • @fizzylimon I don't use my phones data plan! It's connected to the wifi at home when I watch on the phone. It's just me being lazy not wanting to get up out of bed and sit in front of the comp.

I've actually just replied to ur comment by going through safari rather then the YouTube app.. I'll have to try and see if I can like videos that way...

What's to loose? My self-esteem. YouTube comments can be very harsh, I'm not sure that I have thick enough skin for ones that ring true just yet.

  • I often don't comment on videos because I am afraid people will think what I said is stupid or my comment will go unnoticed. I often have thoughts on videos but they seem silly when I put them to words. I know I should comment more but I sometimes just don't know what to say. I do like your videos and I look forward to seeing more. I will also try to comment more.

  • @arandompiece Don't worry! I don't judge what people say. Usually if I'm confused about what someone is saying, but I can tell that they're saying *something,* I'll reply and try to get to understand where they're coming from. The only ones that I tend to bypass are the ones that just say "lol ur awesome" or "I lyke ur eyes" or something like that, haha

  • Well said. I'm not the best at making comments consistently, but I'm trying to get better at it. Glad to hear your thoughts on this!

  • @antigraphophobic No worries at all! I'm glad you're making the effort! And thanks for watching.

  • I don't think I have ever seen a vlogger discuss this. Fantastic video!

  • @andrewcp Thank you! And thanks for watching!

  • i'm glad you keep making videos, steve. honestly, think that videos like this would do worlds more for improving and maintaining the youtube community than a certain video crying about the homepage which will go unnamed.

  • @fecklessman Haha well tbh the homepage DOES need to change... but I'm sure it will happen one day or another.

  • @fizzylimon yeah, but not so much for the reasons expressed by you-know-who. they do need to fix the subscription module and get everyone's subs publishing properly, that's for sure.

  • I like this vlog, so I liked this video. :-)

  • @zottepark Ich verdanke dich!

  • @fizzylimon I'll hold you to it, lol. Snoogans.

  • Stay awesome bud. I agree with you. The best part of YouTube is the interaction and the sharing of videos. If people just view something and don't leave feedback, its discouraging to keep making videos.

  • @eClickNick Exactly! But this video has been very encouraging for me, at least.

  • @fizzylimon you are rockin the subscriber base lately. im excited for u and your youtube life.

  • Thank you for taking the time to create all this awesome content. I enjoy your videos. I don't tend to share them though as I'm the only person in my circle of friends who's into the whole "Youtube community" thing. It's hard to share this side of my life with my friends without coming off as "disconnected from reality".

    DFTBA good sir :)

  • @jeandavidt64 Haha well you never know who would like it! Also, if you join some of the other social networking sites (twitter, tumblr, yourpants, etc.) you can probably meet lots of really cool nerdfighters and youtubers who would love to see new content! Just a thought ;)

  • I don't have anything particular to say about all of that except that I try to like and comment and will continue to try to do that and thanks for reminding me, because I think I need that every so often. I'm not so good at sharing videos and I think that's because I'm a bit older and my peers don't really "get" the vlogging thing, (some don't even get the internet thing!), but I don't know if that's just an excuse I'm using, hmmmm, will think about that.

  • @sepiasunrise Well if it helps your thinking, I can tell you that most sharing happens on social networking sites and most people who share videos don't have a huge following, but every one person who sees the video has an opportunity to show it to at least one other person through those media.

But I know that not really having IRL friends who are into vlogging can make it feel awkward to use those other sites. People always ask me why I have a twitter. I wouldn't if I didn't have viewers.

  • @m3ksa No worries. I know they're not for everyone.

  • Thank you for making this video. I think the community needs a reminder every so often

  • @PurityRayne You're welcome! And thanks for watching :)

  • Im a bad viewer i forget how to like things :( lol

  • @firespyke That doesn't make you a bad viewer! But I appreciate it that you are willing to admit your faults--like I said, I often forget to like videos, and haven't really done it regularly until I made this one.

  • I totally second you on the "ask nicely, not demand" part. Probably one of my biggest pet peeves about comments.

  • @thecynchannel Yeah, especially because a lot of times when I stop it's because real life has a monopoly on my time, not because I'm lazy.

  • I think if you consider making a video a "sacrifice," ur doin it wrong.

I don't think there's anything wrong with enjoying growing your audience and asking people to share your videos, but I do not like the attitude of, the viewers owe that to me because I'm doing this for free and making videos is hard. It's def more endearing to me when a video maker is genuinely excited that people enjoy their videos, because having an audience is neat in and of itself.

  • @raidonthestadiar I guess that part came off wrong. I hope I don't seem like I'm selfishly asking for popularity; that point in specific was more about why content makers are kind of defensive of their content. I really just wanted to make it clear, mostly, that I make videos to interact with people and when they don't interact back it's much less fun than it could be.

BUT I do have to thank you for interacting back, especially while disagreeing, because that's exactly what I like!

  • I don't think viewers have any obligation to comment on or share a video, even if they like it a lot. I enjoy some TV shows a lot, and I'm sure the people who made them put a lot of effort into them, and "sacrificed" things, but I don't make a point of telling my friends to watch them. I just enjoy them and that's it. And I do pretty much the same thing with vlogs.

I don't particularly like a viewer if they comment or share a video of mine -- I just like it when people find them funny.

  • @lauradoestheastro I can get behind that. I was trying not to make it sound like I thought viewers "owed" anything--I really just like it when people take part in the process because that's why I make videos in the first place. I don't much like the TV show analogy, though, because their shows are shared through massive advertising campaigns that we don't have and we depend on word-of-mouth. And I guess this was more applicable to my channel, anyway, than vlogs as a whole. Vague titles are bad.

  • I'm definitely guilty of not commenting enough, which I really need to fix because I love getting comments from the two or three people who regularly comment on my own videos. I'm going to add this to my favourites even if only to remind myself that I need to hold up my end of the YouTube community experience.

  • @freakishlemon For what it's worth, I hadn't been much better about it until making this video. It's a reminder for me, too!

  • I'm just so bad at thinking of things to comment about... But anything for you! xD

  • @satinspats Hahaha well don't try too hard to please me. Obviously it would be a bad idea to go full pendulum the other direction and think "Oh God, he's gonna hate me unless I comment... *beads of sweat*" Just remember that commenting is a good and appreciated thing!

  • Comments are what keep me going! YouTube is such a great platform because of the instant feedback, instant interaction, and it's my favorite part of the whole site.

  • @shessomickey Ditto, sistah! It's weird though because it's not as instant as I'd like. I've been trained as a teacher, and THAT has some instant feedback... I can alter what I'm saying mid-sentence to better suit the reaction, whereas here, I have to have it all planned, unaltered. The best I can do is add an annotation after someone points something out.

  • This is exactly what happens all the time! And I know that I am definitely guilty of all the same things and I am definitely going to try harder to be a better viewer, because that feeling when someone appreciates what you do, it's one of the best feelings ever.

So, starting here, I'm going to be a better viewer

  • @captainbuttons Much appreciated, obviously :D I'll try to be better too!

  • when someone rains on your parade, just dance in the rain! ;D

  • @greenmyste Now I have that song stuck in my head. "DON'T tell me not to LIVE...justsitanputtah. Life's candy and the SUN'S...aballabuttah. Don't bring around a CLOUD to rain on my PARAAAAAAADE!"

  • @fizzylimon haha YES!!!!!! i love that song so much! :D

  • i appreciate vlogs in which the vlogger responds to viewer comments and feedback. one of the many things i like about this channel.

  • @R3TR0R0B0T I appreciate people who appreciate the channel--and now we have started the Snowball of Appreciation XD

  • Love this. Most of my interactions on youtube are with fellow video makers. I think we naturally understand the effort that goes into creating content and what youtubers hope to see in return for their efforts.

I tend to forget what a large portion of youtube is made up of viewers, who often see themselves more as fans in a one-way relationship than as members of a community. I can see where viewers might find it tough to see how to engage and become a part of that community.

  • @shakes1327 Yeah I think it's hard for a lot of people to kind of break the "old media" notions of creator and consumer... it was easy for me to throw that away (I don't really know why) but I think a lot of people, especially people who only watch videos, view youtube channels in that light. Especially popular ones because they don't always feel like they are as conscious of individuals.

  • I Have Recently Being Watching Your Videos. Your Opinions Are Pretty Accurate. I've Just Liked This Video As Well. :)

  • @SEW1995 Why thank'ye kindly!

  • I agree with pretty much everything you said, people dont seem to recognize how much effort goes in to a video. Its like out little babies, so obviously nobody like their baby insulted by no aparent reason or disliked without explication.

  • @gominuke Haha yeah. The other thing that I try to remind people is that with vlogging, you're essentially putting yourself on display, with all your vulnerabilities and imperfections, so when someone shoots down a video, it's really hard to disconnect that from them shooting you down yourself. I should have probably said that in the video, but I always forget things I want to say in videos XD

  • I really like your videos, I just never know what to comment!

  • @aquatius5 No worries! I usually just write down what I'm thinking, even if it feels like I'm repeating the video's content... a lot of times, I just like to tell short anecdotes that relate to the video. It adds to the interaction :D

  • @fizzylimon I shall endeavour in future! :D

  • I'm trying to work on commenting more, but sometimes I just feel like I don't have anything smart to say! But i always like and favorite videos :D

Also you mentioned recognizing usernames, and I don't make videos, but it's so cool how I can look in the comment section of a lot of videos that I watch and see the same usernames. I really like that sense of community :)

  • @llamaindisguise It's definitely awesome. I just saw, for the first time in forever, one of my oldest subscribers and wigged out. It was awesome. That's exactly what I like seeing on my channel :)

  • Yeah, I can dig that, homey. :)

  • @davidleduc85 *throws gang sign* Word.

  • What a fantastic summary! I always "like" the videos I enjoy, but I dont always have something to say about the video but I'm trying to get better about commenting and sharing them.

  • @DigitalCable Well thanks for taking the first step! Haha. Seriously, though, thanks for commenting and I look forward to hearing from you!

  • I like this video:) And commenters who act like peolpe can just randomly create content all the time based on what one person requests make me irritated.

  • @isinBohemianRhapsody No need to get irritated! Just keep doing what you're doing because it's exactly what I like, and it's also the only thing you can control in this exchange :)

  • *sigh* I do enjoy these videos SO much (: I swear, after every one, I spend the rest of the day singing 'It will be alright.....' (:

  • @TealSixString My brother has it as a ringtone, haha. I totally would because I love the song (hence why I chose it two years ago and have kept it since then) but I feel like now that it's established as "my theme song" it would be kind of egotistical XD

  • @fizzylimon Who cares? Embrace it :D It could be/is your trademark. For me, embracing things is what YouTube's all about. Embracing a community, people, beliefs, interests, yourself...... Sorry. I ramble at this time of night.

  • your content is great but you talk really quiet, are you shy or is there some mystical deamon you dont want to wake up?

  • @TheTeenNerd Nope, this is just how I talk. I get really annoyed with my voice if I talk loud in videos because it gets strained and nasaly, and I think that it's also not very conducive to the conversations I want to have. So if you can't hear me... then turn up the volume ;)

I just realized that came across as really insensitive. I do understand where you're coming from, I just know my own style and this is it :)

  • I really like this video, darling. I think it is a good idea to give people some rules for viewers. Especially if people are just starting to get into a community on YouTube. When I first started being a nerdfighter I didn't comment on videos, I would watch and move on. I didn't realize It was okay to share thoughts with others and comment and share the video.

I even forget to like videos sometimes. or way back when... rate it the appropriate number of stars.

    Sometimes knowing rules can help.

  • @desertislanddream Haha well I started watching the vlogbrothers in 2008... so there was a lot of catching up to do, and commenting on old videos doesn't work, but once you're at the present it's perfectly okay ;)

And I don't like thinking of these as "rules" because it's really okay and understandable to break them every once in a while... but they're definitely good things to keep in mind while watching videos ;)

  • Really good idea for a video.

I am like (many) others in forgetting to "like" a video. The commenting part, I always do feel like I want to comment, but don't always feel that what I'm writing is engaging or "worthy" of posting. There is a fine line between wanting to connect with the content creator, yet also wanting to say something meaningful....or not wanting to repeat something already mentioned in the comments.

  • @RedVolly I'm totally with you there. I guess what I've decided in my own experience is that whatever I'm thinking is "worthy," even if it is something like "I wish I had something useful to add, but you really covered it all, but I did enjoy the video!" As for repeating comments, I don't know exactly what is best for that and it's probably different for everybody--I, for one, don't mind repeated comments because it gives me a better idea how many people are thinking that.

  • I usually like videos I like, and tell my friends about them, but I have a problem with commenting. Most of the time it's like there are already at least three comments expressing the same as I wanted to say and then I just see no need in making a fourth of that comment...

  • @janey904 I can understand that. I do find it funny how many times this comment has popped up, but I don't really mind. If more than one person is thinking something, I usually like it when they say it, because it gives me a better idea how many people perceive me in how many ways. At the same time, I'd be less likely to reply because I would have to say pretty much the same thing that many times... so I don't really know. I guess just do what you want, but I don't mind repetitive comments :)

  • Sometimes I make tribute videos and the persons I do them for don't even drop a comment even though I know they've seen the video. That's cold! But I do my videos for personal pleasure and so that can't be ruined by people's ungratefulness or indifference. There will always be a few people to find my videos and say sth nice about them anyway.

  • @TheGodOfPegana I've totally been there--I try to be sympathetic, though, and understand they probably get hundreds of video responses a day and can't watch them all :/ It's great to just have fun making videos though. That's the right reason to be here!

  • Here's my intelligent comment. :)

  • @Enarab1 And here's an EVEN MORE intelligent response, because it contains sophisticated words. Anachronism. Oblong. Gustatory.

  • @fizzylimon Anachronistic. Vendetta. & Loquacious. Beat that!

  • @Enarab1 I said "anachronism." You lose, technically, for having repeated me. However, I will overlook it and continue: Floccinaucinihilipilification. Vociferous. Callipygian.

  • @fizzylimon Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis. pseudopseudohypoparathyroidism. immunoelectrophoretically.& anticonstitutionnellement (yes that was french).

I would write more, but I might go over the character limit.

  • @Enarab1 AAAAHHH SAVE ME! Sorry, I'm hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobic :P

  • @fizzylimon then you probably wouldn't want a sentence which increases by a letter for each word. :P

I do not know where family doctors acquired illegibly perplexing handwriting nevertheless, extraordinary pharmaceutical intellectuality counterbalancing indecipherability, transcendentalizes intercommunications incomprehensibleness.

    Try saying that ten times!

  • @Enarab1 That is one awesome sentence. It reminds me of some other fun facts about typing: lollipop is the longest word one can type with the right hand and stewardesses is the longest word one can type with the left hand and leptothricosis is the longest word you can type alternating hands. If you use proper technique, of course.

  • There's a massive amount of videos on YouTube on the topic of how to make videos. I think this was useful because there are so many more people on YouTube who just watch videos than there people who make videos. Good viewers are just as important as good content creators - they can work together so much better that way. :)

    [- Amy]

  • @ProcrastinateDaily It's true! It's a magical symbiotic relationship that needs to be maintained if it will work.

  • I think one of the main problems is that the viewers are either very cynical or very naive. If you make a video like this, which was (as always) wonderful, people who don't know you are going to think you are demanding things of them, which you are very clearly not, whereas if a "big" YouTuber *coughShanebloodyDawsoncough* demands a like, favourite etc during every video, they'll buy it because they feel that because he's popular, they have to. Backwards thinking.

  • @puglish Haha I sense a twinge of bitterness? Or is that just me? :P And I guess I never thought about it that way. I know a lot of people think that when a channel is partnered, they automatically have sold their soul and are rolling in cash... it's simply not the case. I'm the same person I was back when I was doing it for free... and technically speaking I've been doing it for free since then since I have yet to be paid a dime. Thanks for the support :)

  • Agreed. It's not like I'm begging for comments or feedback, but it is VERY encouraging to receive comments that pertain to the videos rather than hater comments or "y r u so cute".

I get really happy when I see the same core group of people commenting on my videos. I feel like I'm becoming well-acquainted with them at that point.

  • @elizziebooks Ditto! I also like seeing them in other places, too. I often see subscribers' names I recognize in the comment sections of other videos I watch. Or, say, in BlogTV rooms for people whose screennames I know I've seen... purely hypothetical... :P

  • I think this was such a smart idea for a video... Like you say, so many people create videos on how to make vlogs when most people who use YouTube watch videos rather than create them. I think it's nice to hear what the content creators have to say on this topic, and I think more people should make videos on this. Having said that, you did raise most if not all of the points I myself would have made...

  • @DelusionalCupcake Thanks! As someone who once only watched videos, I have some experience under my belt from which to speak :) And thanks for watching and commenting! It means a lot.

  • @fizzylimon No problem, commenting is fun :) Especially when there's something meaningful to say about a video.

  • This is the first video of yours I watched and I really enjoyed it. You seem smart, interesting and your collection of vintage posters is awesome. I feel obligated (in a good way) to leave a smart comment and like more videos because of all the work put in them.

  • @theamazingMAGGIE Haha thanks! I'm glad to know my environment is conducive to good conversation XD

  • I am guilty of rarely sharing videos via word of mouth, but I definitely appreciate it when others do. For instance, I did not see this video in my subscription box; instead, I followed the link you posted on your blog. (That's not completely applicable, since you were sharing your own video, but I may not have seen it otherwise.) Also, a lot of time YouTubers who I'm not subscribed to will post something of interest that I would never see without the tweets of those people I do watch/follow.

  • @TheMandiBarnett Exactly! Oh, and thanks for reading my blog :D But I definitely do love seeing a few videos of other content makers, even if I wouldn't subscribe to them. Just because I don't subscribe doesn't mean that I wouldn't want to watch ANY of their content.

  • I've always been an engaging viewer because I thought that's what the content creators expected of me when I was just a viewer. I still think I'm more of a viewer nowadays because I always have to like if I liked the video and comment if I watched it and favorite it if it spoke to me. I often try to share videos on Twitter and Facebook and such, but I want the ones that I share there to be the very, very best, so that more traffic reaches that video. But, I agree! Yay for this video. :D

  • @emmfan09 I think you're pretty good about all of that, but then again I just talk to you all the time (or rather DID and SHOULD haha) so my perception is admittedly biased.

  • @cathsmith57 um, thank you? Sorry I can't tell if you actually like it or are just saying that because of my 'I really liked this video' comment haha :)

  • Also, i love all of your posters. Just thought you should know :)

  • I completely understand what you're saying.Don't worry, you don't come across like you're demanding things. I've been trying to like videos that i actually like. Its something that you do forget to do but something that really helps boost confidence and helps them know what sort of videos they should be doing more of. It ! I agree with you on the subscription box also. Its really reducing youtubers' confidence as they think no one is watching when really, its just no one's boxes have been updated

  • @DeadEndDoll94 It is definitely easy to forget to "like," but I've gotten better about it since mentioning it, so I guess if nothing else, I benefited from making the video as much as anyone else did from watching it! Thanks for participating :D

Oh, and thanks for the compliment about the posters XD

  • I have that problem sometimes.....I go through a period where I comment on every video and love conversing in the comment section, but then there comes a period when I just watch the video and leave without commenting....I don't know why that period arises, but it just happens. It's hard to explain and I'm starting to question if this makes any sense.

  • @halosandbagels No, it makes plenty of sense. I've totally been there. I've just started to fight it more and more, so those phases have gotten shorter and shorter. Obviously it's ludicrous to expect everyone to comment all the time, but it's a good idea to try to do it *most* of the time!

  • I hardly ever say anything witty or constructive. Although admittedly that also goes for my real life too!

  • @mymarblesandme Haha well I know your username, so I'm sure you're doing plenty :) Thanks for commenting regardless!

  • I thumbs up videos automatically, because if I clicked on it, I'm probably gonna like it, especially if it's in my sub box! Plus, I always try to do my best and comment ESPECIALLY if it's on a good video with less than about 25 comments. Also, sometimes I feel like I spend about 5 minutes on a single comment, and in those circomstances, 500 characters is totally not enough. It takes me as much time to write the comment as it does to minimize the amount of characters to be in the 500 range.

  • @ntcssj Ugh I know exactly what that's like, especially for videos that are important to me. Condensing comments is just way too much work, but it usually pays off, because I often read over it after finishing and think to myself "Why would I have written more than this? This is perfectly concise."

  • @fizzylimon I usually have to replace ands with & to fit everything. XD

Sometimes I feel like I should be making a video response instead, but usually that would take about 2 hours compared with two minutes. I've always said that 24 hours is not enough in a day. :)

  • I try to comment when I have something good to comment about. Sometimes a video can be really good, but really don't know what to comment. So insted I don't comment. And english is not my first language, so I'm a bit insecure about my spelling and grammar. But lately I've started to comment more and more! :)

  • @MagpieFlyAway Well, don't worry about your grammar in my comment section :D I love having international viewers because I get so many more perspectives in the comments! But if you don't know what to comment, I can't blame you for not commenting. Usually I'll just say something like "I really wish I had something to add because I really enjoyed this video and love talking about the subject" when I don't have anything to say, but if that seems pointless to you, I can't really hold it against you!

  • hi. how are you ? :)

  • @agent941 HOLY WOW you're an old viewer! I remember typing your name in my "thanks for 100 subs" video. I'm doing very well now, knowing that people are sticking around, thanks :D How are you?

  • @fizzylimon you remember that ? that is so cool. :D i remember i felt realy stupid for having to ask what "in the heezy" meant xP

it dosn't feel that long ago. but i went back and saw the video again, and you've changed a lot. you've gon from looking like this cute brother-ish guy, to being quite handsom ;)

i'm ok. it's been a bit hard lately, but i'm doing beter now, hopefuly it wil last :)

  • I really like this video because we finally see the perspective of the video maker.

I always try to like and comment on videos because I know that I like when people to the same to me.

  • @Gvf77x Thank you! And thanks for watching and commenting!

  • I totally understand where you are coming from I watch your videos but don't comment much, bad me. I have this group that I interact with and it brightens my day to see comments from them. Keep up the awesome.

  • @TheCasperOne Don't feel bad for not commenting! I don't want that; I just wanted you to know that I like comments because that's what I'm here for. Also, I'm glad that you have a group that you interact with because from my own experience, that just makes your time here that much better!

  • Interaction in the YouTube community is what makes the YT community. I do all said things such as liking, sharing and commenting. Though when it comes to commenting (as someone already said) I find it hard to write anything when I just in general like a video and have nothing to add. If I comment 'I really liked this video' it just seems boring. That being said, I really enjoyed this video :) haha

  • Comment removed

  • @reianaisawesome I really liked this comment.

  • @reianaisawesome I can totally understand. Usually, in my own commenting, if I have nothing to add, that's pretty much what I'll say. I like knowing that people found my videos thorough, so those comments are important to me :) But I don't blame you for not commenting because it's not much of a way to continue the conversation... so basically, do what you want in such a case! Haha

  • I gotta say Fizzy... I've always enjoyed your content because not only do you have a beautiful voice... but you actually talk about things that matter to you. You inform and discuss on topics which are close to you and I think that's important in making your content real. Keep up the good work

    Reb

  • @RebbelReb Thanks! And it was great to sort-of meet you in the Tube Trials :D

  • I subbed based on this video. Thank you for the reminder to actively participate in the video, instead of just consuming it. :) Also, I like your posters, esp. the psycho one & the one with robotic calls and the man's head >>>

Right now I don't have time to go check out your channel, but hopefully I will remember tomorrow. :)

    All the best.

  • @RosesSuposes Haha the robotic one is a Flight of the Conchords poster. I really liked the design. Glad you enjoyed the video!

  • I completely agree with this whole video, but specifically the last point. I know my viewers and I love the ones who leave comments on every video and I try to reply as often as possible. I have a list of names in my head of usernames that I know I can count on to leave comments and I usually get excited when I see that e-mail saying they have. And, if any of them are vloggers or start making vlogs, i will talk them up at some point because it means that much to me.

  • @Juanitothegreat o/\o Go team! Haha I don't have much to say... I like replying to comments as well (ergo, this comment exists) and am always willing to talk. I'm unfortunately very busy actually finishing my degree for the next three weeks (graduation was just the ceremony for me, but hey, only three weeks left!) and then I'll be bored as all get-out so we should talk then :)

  • I'm really glad you made a vlog on this, cause I've just started vlogging myself, and one of my main worries has been on how to enter the community, without sounding needy : )

  • @madammortus Well just remember that whatever you do, someone will dislike it, haha. Just do what you want and invite people to join the fun, and I bet you'll have a great time :)

  • I want to watch the vid on the youtube community, but the links at the end of the video don't seem to be working. Are they working for anyone else? Anyone know the name of the video?

  • @xboazx Ohmygoodness! They're not working! I swear, they're there in the "edit annotations" function. YouTube fails again. I'll put them in the description :)

  • That said, it's never distracting from the content and, from what I've heard around the Andrew Bravener stir recently, apparently it's something that youtubers pretty much have to do, if they want their opinions to gain a larger audience now. It would just be nice to occasionally acknowledge the viewers, who engage without having been instructed to.

  • @ThatBookGirl Yeah I'm basically trying to figure out a way to do just that without making you feel like you didn't already know better, have an obligation to do it, etc. because really what I'm asking for is not popularity but involvement. I'll be keeping new ideas spinning to get more community involvement without that annoying, superficial popularity stuff. BUT! I guess I *should* thank you for doing it of your own accord because that's pretty awesome and better than I do :D

  • I always thought that if a video was interesting and thought-provoking, people liked, shared and commented of their own accord. To be honest, I find those reminders to "like, comment and favorite! And don't forget to subscribe!" slightly annoying, because I feel they rest on the assumption that I'm somehow not smart enough or capable to remember that myself, in case I actually like the video...

  • I love when you make new videos. Just thought I ought to let you know that I really do appreciate the content that you produce (sidenote: produce sounds a bit odd to me, like you're a machine or a factory even though you're obviously just another human being whom I happened to bump into across a crowded internet). I tend to always just like videos rather than commenting, which I now realise is rather silly - but I take about half an hour to think of a good response that hasn't already been said.

  • @NatalieZenaLouise I don't think you need to say something that hasn't been said. Well, I guess it's up to you what you want to comment. I'm definitely more likely to reply to new ideas than repeated ones, for sure, just because when I have five comments of the same thing, I can't think of a new way to say what I already said. But I would rather have a repeated comment over nothing at all because at least then I know that more than one person is thinking that :D

  • I like when rules are explained to me. The viewership rules are now explained and can be used.

  • @teganbowiefreak Don't take them as "rules," though. Rules seem so inflexible. The whole point of these two videos was to say that it's not a rigid, ritualized process, but rather a fluid set of interactions. But I'm glad that you're willing to participate and keep them in mind :)

  • @fizzylimon

Few things are as fexible as rules.

The sole purpose of rules is to be bended. (and to give you a direction where you can start bending and get away with it)

These "rules" you line out in the video do have the disadvantage that when bended too far, the consequence is that you annoy someone whose videos you like. That makes it both fun and risky.

  • What if you feel completely neutral towards a video and you can't think of any intelligent commentary because there is simply not much to say?

  • @TheoreticalLife Usually I like comments that say something to that effect, to be honest. I suppose that'd be something that differs from person to person, but I very much appreciate it - numbers tell me nothing, but a comment saying "I don't have much to say, but I liked the video!" at least tells me you care about the fact that it exists.

If you're COMPLETELY neutral and it doesn't affect you in any way, though, I certainly can't blame you for clicking away and not commenting OR liking..

  • One of my favorite things about youtube is recognizing the names of people who comment on my videos and having conversations in the comments. I have made most of my youtube friends through commenting on each other's videos.

I always try to remember to like videos (if I like them) and leave comments if I have something to say, because the interaction between vloggers and commenters is a huge part of what makes youtube such a wonderful community.

  • @tallatstarbucks And one of the even better parts is when they make video responses/enter contests you host because their faces and voices are linked with their comments and you feel even MORE connected :) So thanks for participating!

  • I think smart comments are my favorite part of YT. As a video maker, not only does it let me know that people are watching my video, but it also gives me a chance to get to know my viewers and interact with them. Initially, my videos were just for me and I would have made them regardless of having an audience. Now, however, the interaction is one of the reasons I enjoy making videos and I wouldn't be able to make half of my videos without those interactions.

  • @titancia Preach it! I wish I had something to add because this would be such a lovely conversation, but having conversations with like-minded people is a pretty difficult thing to keep up XD
