U r right, her best one is this song. Wish I could hear it she with Pastorius and Metheney. It was on youtube but deleted unfortunately. D Black Crow was also a great stuff with Michael Brecker. Respect
I think that this is a Song that anybody ,who can sing in tune ,can make a good job of and at the same time put their own slant on it .Innit. Because ...it's a great song and it comes from the trilogy of Court & Spark ,The Hissing of Summer Lawns, & Hejira all masterpieces ...timeless music .
I've always listened mainly to "The Jungle Line" and the title cut off "The Hissing of Summer Lawns." Not that I didn't like the other songs...I just really loved those two.
But when I listen to this again...wow! This is, as most of her work is also, simply great! I'd love to see her live.
Aside from the perfect "Court and Spark," this is another example of Joni's musical genius. I absolutely love this particular song from "The Hissing of Summer Lawns." I put Steely Dan and Joni Mitchell on the same page, being that their songs are unique, unusual chords, some unusual time signatures, and some wonderful orchestrations/arrangements!
Something I think about her songwriting is that it is True to Life; she is able to bring to life Ideas that take on a life of their own human emotion longing and desire, becomes real when she sings about them
I spent an absolutely gorgeous morning in May listening to this on vinyl. I was naked and smoked a few bowls and just laid on the deck, looking at the mountains in the distance, sunbathing. It was the most sensual, relaxing, contented moment of my life so far.......
@Ghoopty there is something about her music that reaches you on a deeper level (Spiritual ? ) it moves you I came late to JM but I went through a time I had to listen to her EVERYDAY ! I now am looking for a cd called DOG EAT DOG, I also love COURT AND SPARK. among others
@colejx78 Yeh....I listened to Court & Spark almost every day initially too. It was the perfect soundtrack for driving to work in the morning. As a songwriter, I am in awe and highly envious of her talent! It's similar to Steely Dan - tight, impeccable, intelligent, sensual stuff.
@Ghoopty Around the time of the 'Dog Eat Dog' album Joni appeared at a 'Songwriting Masterclass' interview in London, England. When asked by a member of the audience who she thought was pushing the art of songwriting at the time, she said Walter Becker and Donald Fagen.
This is amazing. How did one woman write so many good songs? I hardly have the time to really consume all of her great work. I feel I dont listen to it all enough to do her justice.
Sorry Beyoncé, sorry Christina and the others. You NEED TO take off your clothes to keep on singing. She does not need and will sing until the end. She is the one...
This is my favorite Joni Mitchell song, in fact the entire album is probably her best, much neglected by many who "claim" to like Mitchell (but whom never listen to anything but "Blue"). Her quartal sense of harmony was always ripe for rich arrangements like these and I think this song, along with Car On A Hill, sum up her musical sense brilliantly. Love the harmonic layers in this. What a brilliant era.
Love the picture, can you imagine all the women in the middle east covering themselves who could feel the touch of sunshine just by giving themselves the benefit of a few inches of freedom from cover... I share with them this thought from America , be a little selfish and "go for it"
This is one of my top ten favorite tunes ever written and recorded (most likely, as I don't actually have such a list). A cloudy weekend afternoon in the fall, like today, always makes me think of this song. Haunted for life by those last 30 seconds. To my great pleasure and surprise, Herbie Hancock and Tina Turner did a knockout cover of this on his great "The Joni Letters" album.
Joni is a celestrial being...God truly expresses Herself through the words and music and love emanating from this beautific soul. It still sounds startlingly new and fresh. She can talk about cocaine and love's slaves.... Her perspective tears the covers off the crimes of living. No one speaks with the honesty of Joni Mitchell
Joni's Lyrics are always astonishing, but even more so in this song...'frantic and snowblind...romantic and snowblind'....nails that post-coital state between strangers brilliantly....the melody's no slouch either!
It's funny, I can't hear the last notes without expecting the open-tuned strum of Don't Interrupt the Sorrow to kick in. One of those albums that just flows end-to-end.
I love this song. The Hissing Of Summer Lawns is definitely my favorite album of all time. The whole album always reminds me of summertime and each May/June I play the album over and over and over. I'd be lost without doses of Joni.
@welbymd I agree! I'd be lost without my weekly dose. I never tire of her songs, her voice, her words. What is it? It's not an obsession. I think it's something of a spiritual connection - like something in certain spirits that identify with one another in art, sound and word. Like sharing a bit of God.
I first got into Joni about a year ago and have about 7 of her albums. This is my favourite Joni Mitchell song - such a beautiful song. Jansen ,40, in London
I love Wilton's bass sound. Very definitely using a pick. He played a Fender Telecaster bass, I believe. I actually prefer him to Max and Jaco - gulp!
You are right...Wilton does play bass on this song. Wilton is surprisingly good at bass, considering he was known for his sax playing as well. Max Bennett was on most of her songs for several years during this period (bf) before Jaco.
@Zzuni1 I Think you hit the nail right on the head when you mentioned this song being a soundtrack to a beautiful dream. Very special song that i never tire of.
Hi Blackkendol...you have great taste in music. Though atypical, this is one of Joni's most sublime tracks. Geniously observed lyrics...'frantic and snowblind, romantic and snowblind..' How many times have we all felt that after a night if misguided lust.
She's so descriptive with not only the words but the feel of the chords to the point that in my own mind when she says "a plane in the rain is humming" , that I can picture a private twin engine jet prop plane doing a slow turn onto the taxi way from the main run way in a steady drizzle of rain.
