  • WAAJEED killed this!

  • This woman's music means more to me than any other music.

  • Can't get enough of this...

  • sampled by apollo brown

  • U r right, her best one is this song. Wish I could hear it she with Pastorius and Metheney. It was on youtube but deleted unfortunately. D Black Crow was also a great stuff with Michael Brecker. Respect

  • Such a beautiful song and excellent production !!

  • The music to a dream....Beautiful...

  • goosebumps in the soul

  • The moment when we knew Joni had officially stopped being a 'folkie' and become a 'jazzer'....silky genius!!!!

  • I think that this is a Song that anybody ,who can sing in tune ,can make a good job of and at the same time put their own slant on it .Innit. Because ...it's a great song and it comes from the trilogy of Court & Spark ,The Hissing of Summer Lawns, & Hejira all masterpieces ...timeless music .

  • Joni's 'Hejira' is one the greatest albums i've ever heard.

I'm a 58 year old, ex- aussie army infantryman. Joni has kept me sane!!

  • I've always listened mainly to "The Jungle Line" and the title cut off "The Hissing of Summer Lawns." Not that I didn't like the other songs...I just really loved those two.

But when I listen to this again...wow! This is, as most of her work is also, simply great! I'd love to see her live.

  • Very etherical (sp) song...................

  • I've got an ear for a good song. This is one of them!

  • Aside from the perfect "Court and Spark," this is another example of Joni's musical genius. I absolutely love this particular song from "The Hissing of Summer Lawns." I put Steely Dan and Joni Mitchell on the same page, being that their songs are unique, unusual chords, some unusual time signatures, and some wonderful orchestrations/arrangements!

  • Something I think about her songwriting is that it is True to Life; she is able to bring to life Ideas that take on a life of their own human emotion longing and desire, becomes real when she sings about them

  • I love Joni

  • Love her lover her loooooove her!

  • OSTR Problemy , check it !!!

  • I spent an absolutely gorgeous morning in May listening to this on vinyl. I was naked and smoked a few bowls and just laid on the deck, looking at the mountains in the distance, sunbathing. It was the most sensual, relaxing, contented moment of my life so far.......

  • @Ghoopty there is something about her music that reaches you on a deeper level (Spiritual ? ) it moves you I came late to JM but I went through a time I had to listen to her EVERYDAY ! I now am looking for a cd called DOG EAT DOG, I also love COURT AND SPARK. among others

  • @colejx78 Yeh....I listened to Court & Spark almost every day initially too. It was the perfect soundtrack for driving to work in the morning. As a songwriter, I am in awe and highly envious of her talent! It's similar to Steely Dan - tight, impeccable, intelligent, sensual stuff.

  • @Ghoopty - You hit the nail on the head with that comparison to Steely Dan. It hadn't occurred to me until now but it makes a lot of sense.

  • @Ghoopty Joni and The Crusaders! Remember, many of the players on this track graced various Steely Dan material like 'Aja', for example.

  • @candelise I see - it's all falling into place........;)

  • @Ghoopty Around the time of the 'Dog Eat Dog' album Joni appeared at a 'Songwriting Masterclass' interview in London, England. When asked by a member of the audience who she thought was pushing the art of songwriting at the time, she said Walter Becker and Donald Fagen.

  • How pathetic anyone compare Turner to Mitchell. Turner is not fit to so much as listen to Mitchell...........................

  • This is amazing. How did one woman write so many good songs? I hardly have the time to really consume all of her great work. I feel I dont listen to it all enough to do her justice.

  • Hissing of Summer Lawns Joni's first great jazz album

  • The beauty of this song almost frightens me.

  • @RinnyRin69 mmmmmm................beautiful thought

  • "The Hissing of Summer Lawns",the best of Joni's albums in my opinion. It's a record which is about one or two decades in advance of its age (1975).

  • She is the best...

Sorry Beyoncé, sorry Christina and the others. You NEED TO take off your clothes to keep on singing. She does not need and will sing until the end. She is the one...

    Love you so much Joni...

  • Like a song from a beautiful dream

  • This is my favorite Joni Mitchell song, in fact the entire album is probably her best, much neglected by many who "claim" to like Mitchell (but whom never listen to anything but "Blue"). Her quartal sense of harmony was always ripe for rich arrangements like these and I think this song, along with Car On A Hill, sum up her musical sense brilliantly. Love the harmonic layers in this. What a brilliant era.

  • It is unbelieveable. One of Joni's most beautiful pieces. (you know, they dare not look away)...

  • Love this..... damn.... very sexy song.....

  • This is clearly one of her "best" compositions. Intense as hell!!

  • fucken A

  • John Guerin understood and complimented Joni Mitchells talent better than any other drummer

  • sophmore jive....when i was a sophmore!

  • Love the picture, can you imagine all the women in the middle east covering themselves who could feel the touch of sunshine just by giving themselves the benefit of a few inches of freedom from cover... I share with them this thought from America , be a little selfish and "go for it"

  • agree.....it's her voice @ everything else she did,,,,check your liner notes newbees& enjoy our free radicals ;)

  • There's No One Like Joni

  • This is one of my top ten favorite tunes ever written and recorded (most likely, as I don't actually have such a list). A cloudy weekend afternoon in the fall, like today, always makes me think of this song. Haunted for life by those last 30 seconds. To my great pleasure and surprise, Herbie Hancock and Tina Turner did a knockout cover of this on his great "The Joni Letters" album.

  • brutal

  • Joni is a celestrial being...God truly expresses Herself through the words and music and love emanating from this beautific soul. It still sounds startlingly new and fresh. She can talk about cocaine and love's slaves.... Her perspective tears the covers off the crimes of living. No one speaks with the honesty of Joni Mitchell

  • too dope

  • i like 0-3:38

  • I mean - what an amazing tune - the complexity and depth - yet so light. Joni is the real thing!

  • Astonishing

  • Joni's Lyrics are always astonishing, but even more so in this song...'frantic and snowblind...romantic and snowblind'....nails that post-coital state between strangers brilliantly....the melody's no slouch either!

  • It's funny, I can't hear the last notes without expecting the open-tuned strum of Don't Interrupt the Sorrow to kick in. One of those albums that just flows end-to-end.

  • one of my favourite pieces of music ever...

  • Para el postre .

  • Wow, I really have such a narrow listening view of artists like Joni Mitchell. I feel as though I short changed myself in my younger days. : (

  • music of the spheres

  • .....a plane in the rain is hummin....the wires in the walls are hummin.....some song......some mysterious song..........

  • The best song from Joni, Tina`s version can`t compare with this one.

Joni Mitchell female and Kenny Rankin RIP male listen to their songs and you will know what good music is.

Kenny Rankin can entertain an whole audience with only a guitar and his voice !

Listen to Groovin, Penny Lane etc

Sadly he past away last year but his music cannon is phenomenal !

  • I love this song. The Hissing Of Summer Lawns is definitely my favorite album of all time. The whole album always reminds me of summertime and each May/June I play the album over and over and over. I'd be lost without doses of Joni.

  • @welbymd I agree! I'd be lost without my weekly dose. I never tire of her songs, her voice, her words. What is it? It's not an obsession. I think it's something of a spiritual connection - like something in certain spirits that identify with one another in art, sound and word. Like sharing a bit of God.

  • WOW! The new Comment "Notations" by YouTube REALLY Zuck!!!!!!!!

(Obviously I can't spell Zuck with an S or YouTube will Censor & Delete me!!!)

  • One of the finest melodies ever from Joni. Love it.

  • I first got into Joni about a year ago and have about 7 of her albums. This is my favourite Joni Mitchell song - such a beautiful song. Jansen ,40, in London

  • I love how the horns come in on this! 'The big man arrives" BAB-BAAAAAAAHH! Splendiferous!

  • @9ertsch have to agree with you...

  • I love Wilton's bass sound. Very definitely using a pick. He played a Fender Telecaster bass, I believe. I actually prefer him to Max and Jaco - gulp!

  • Actually, Wilton Felder plays bass on this track

  • You are right...Wilton does play bass on this song. Wilton is surprisingly good at bass, considering he was known for his sax playing as well. Max Bennett was on most of her songs for several years during this period (bf) before Jaco.

  • One of my favorite Joni songs. Max now lives in San Clemente CA. Great bass, Max, I love the bass on this. Joni at her best.

  • Ehereal, Sublime, Mesmerizing......The soundtrack to a beautiful dream.

Her other stripped-down versions and the cover versions by Tina, and George just do not compare with this one.

  • @Zzuni1 I Think you hit the nail right on the head when you mentioned this song being a soundtrack to a beautiful dream. Very special song that i never tire of.

  • Hi Blackkendol...you have great taste in music. Though atypical, this is one of Joni's most sublime tracks. Geniously observed lyrics...'frantic and snowblind, romantic and snowblind..' How many times have we all felt that after a night if misguided lust.

  • She's so descriptive with not only the words but the feel of the chords to the point that in my own mind when she says "a plane in the rain is humming" , that I can picture a private twin engine jet prop plane doing a slow turn onto the taxi way from the main run way in a steady drizzle of rain.

  • I had never heard this version before Tina Turner's cover. They are both so great and so different. I'm not too keen on George Michael's version tho!!

  • such a beautiful picture of Joni. Thanks for posting.

  • and to think music like this was once played on the radio...class on the FM band...be greatful you were there to witness it.....

  • if God has a voice, it will probably sound like this

  • Is this song unbelievable or what?

It is just so beautiful lyrically and musically,

    and there's that VOICE.

This and "The Magdalene Laundries" capture me every time. But then, that's what Joni does to you.

    That's a good thing.

  • Beautiful time for Joni. 1975. She was really coming in to her own. This is basically the LA Express behind her. The great Larry Carlton (guitar) Max Bennett (bass) John Guerin (drums) Victor Feldman (keyboards)

  • Sublime!

  • what excellence............!

  • joni speaks to and through me. that's so hard to do. kudo's joni, i love your spirit...

  • This is my favourite song of all time. I've never heard anything that would even remotely parallel its elegance.

  • NO ARTIST, NO MATTER HOW FINE, can do joni better than joni not even close she's perfection and there's no improving on that.

  • what does that hand desire...that he grips it so tight

  • this is so beautiful.....it's almost unreal....

  • what does that hand desire that he grips it so tight

  • Classic. Among my top 3 Joni songs ever.

  • LOVE the sound of this! :)

  • Joni Mitchell has the definitive version..because it is not just in the voice, but in the music and instrumentation...the best part of this song is after her voice trails off..and the musicians leads it out...fantastic

  • yes sir i agree 100%

  • I agree; and when I hear the music, I'm immediately transported back to the 70's. The instrumentation of that entire album is perfection. LOVE this song!

  • this is the first version I heard...but I must say I actually like the live version with Jaco&co. better

This one is definitely very slick though.

  • @mrpentium check out herbie hancock ft melody Gardot. Beautiful arangement.

  • @mrpentium Nah, the entire song is the best part.

  • @mrpentium The Hissing of Summer Lawns and Hejira are two albums that I could never leave behind. I share your feelings about Edith and the Kingpin. Shades of Scarlet is similar - the final emphasis on 'A woman must have everything,'

  • Yet, another video of the mind. The melody and the music is mesmerizing. One of my favorites from "Hissing".

  • no,i dont agree with that.....though i love tinas version...i think joni is the better singer of the song and i love the music better.

  • @blackkendoll82 different, not better...The entire Herbie Hancock Album is so brilliant...

  • I just caught the Tina version tonight. It's great this song is being recognized again. But I don't think she rendered it as well. I guess it's just different, is all. Maybe I need some time to understand her point of view. She's a lot older than I....
