@TheSmithArmyWife I am sure you have done something about this since then, but I was in the Army, I had my loans and savings with Navy Federal, and I had my banking and insurance through USAA. Bank of America specializes in fees. I had $4k in my bank one night, deposited that day, next morning -$700, they said it was a "network error of overdraft fees, and we will resolve the problem, give us 3-5 business days and your money will be back in there" that is BS!
UK banks do the same thing - I made 2 store purchases on my debit card for about 5 pounds each - I was unaware that i was overdrawn and ended up payng about 100 pounds fees on those transactions - the moral - be careful!
Why the fuck do they call it overdraft PROTECTION if they ALLOW you to overdraft and then hit you with tons of fees? How the fuck is that protection if they ALLOW you to spend more than you have and then make a profit off of your mistake? PROTECTION would be if they prevented the transaction from going through so you didn't spend more than you have. They ought to call that shit "overdraft penalities" or "overdraft ass-raping."
Umm, if I recall, never in history did banks automatically opt people the fuck into overdraft protection before there were debit cards. If you wrote a check that you couldn't cover back then, IT BOUNCED. Therefore, if you make a purchase with a debit card that you can't cover, THE TRANSACTION SHOULD BE CANCELLED. Overdraft "protection" is a fucking scam and Bank of America is an unethical company, period. You should be ashamed of yourself for doing business with them.
instead of trying to flip everything she said to you, attempt to understand what she is explaining to you. stop pestering customer support because you like to spend your hubbys money and go take that loud ass to the park.
@blackkhakis You really need to shut the fuck up. You're probably one of those over-privileged rich white fuckers whose mommy and daddy helped put you through college and become a "success" in the world. Guess what you condescending, mean-spirited piece of shit; people make mistakes. Is it really right that banks should be able to take advantage of people and put them in a severe financial bind just because they made a simple mistake? After you die and you're judged by god, enjoy hell!
Since mid 2010, BOA's overdraft fee policy have changed for the better, by law. It's on BOA's website. If you don't have sufficient funds, your card will simply be declined on the spot without getting slapped with an overdraft fee(s). This new policy applies to ALL customers. Overdraft fees still apply to bounced checks and recurring payments. If you decide that you want to "opt-in", you can call them, but I think fees apply at that point.
I love these pompous pieces of shit who say: "It's your own fault for not reading the fine print dumbass!" To all of you condescending geniuses out there: You're right, I didn't read the fine print. I just assumed, like a logical fucking human being, that if I didn't have sufficient funds in my account to pay for something with my debit card the register would reject the transaction. Why didn't paper checks just overdraft your account back in the day? Why did they bounce instead?
I would think a check register is in order......... No, debit cards are not immediate. It is determined by the MERCHANT when the money will leave your account to the merchant. Keep track of your transactions, not that hard lol
Banks have already gotten busted for processing pending charges by size not order recieved so this woman is full of it. Thats why after aug 15 2010 they can't do it anymore.
when your swipe your check card as pinless it can take up to 3 business days to come out, it can be presented as an authorzation hold which means it will showup as processing but if the merchant dosnt collect funds it will fall off the account at close of business day and be re-presented the following buiness day...a pin based transaction will come out right away...auth hold transactions that are postig wittt oher procssing post largest to smallest :) deposit agreement..read it...
You can resolve this issue by going to the website helpwithmybank. gov/ complaints/ index.html.
It has some spaces or it won't be allowed. You can get your money back in less than 72 hours if your case is legit. Those thugs won't do anything for you. You need an outside agency.
They took FIVE DAYS to process my paycheck (no, not a personal check, either) and then, when my bills began drafting out automatically, they posted highest to lowest. This automatically put me in the negative, and they got to charge me $35... again... and again... and again. Even by the time they process my paycheck, I was in the red. So then they kept trying to clear a check (knowing I didn't have any money) and charged me again... and again... $315 (so far). I'm going to a local bank today!
Banks have now been banned from charging overdraft fees without your approval. Do not sign up for "overdraft protection", otherwise, they will be able to fine you overdraft fees.
The first mistake you made is checking your account balance online. The account balances online are not updated properly(I believe the bank does this on purpose)
The best way to keep up with your balance is to keep track of your balance the old fashion way(by writing down your transactions, keeping up with your balance by using a calculator and by keeping up with all your receipts) I'm doing this now and I haven't received any overdraft fees since.
thats bull shit, because when i called them they said merchant deciede the date of charging, thats not true. Bank of America replace the charging!!!!! bs =P
Bank of America is a scam. Any sane government would consider Bank of America manipulation of transaction dates as criminal activities and shut them down. Don't bank of Bank of America. Open an account with your local credit union. As a credit union member, you will own a share of the credit union you bank with.
Sounds like this is what happened. (I'm gonna fib on the amounts since I don't know what htye are.)
You had 100
you spent 25.0
you spent 50
you spent 25.0 again.
Ok those were all debit card transactions
then on the day all those processed you had a check (electronic or otherwise come in) for 75.00
Posting is highest to lowest. So yes you had money in the account at the time you swiped the card, but when everything posted a check YOU forgot about came in and caused other transactions to OD.
"Can I finish.." you asked a question, then paused. Shes answering you.
No transactions don't immediately post, you have the responsibility to keep track of your transactions.
We have to have the reciept from the merchant to process the transactions. Doesn't have to be a paper reciept but its a type of reciept. if you don't use your pin number.
With that, they can take 6 MONTHS to turn those in, we give you the funds back after 3 days. again keep a register.
I am a former Bank of America employee. Bank of America 'legally' is correct to charge you the fees because that is how there system is designed. However, it is completely unjust. When this system started recently, I asked my market manager about it and in his words 'it is a great money making tool'.
Same thing happened to me. the online website for my bank had two categories. Available and Non available. I opened the account with CASH. it took 3 weeks before i got my debit card so ZERO transaction were made during that wait time. The CASH i opened the account with kept bouncing back and forth between the two categories. when i made my first purchase. they paid it AND MOVED the same dollar amount over to the NON available category. to "COVER" the CASH purchase I made. CASH... CASH... ???
omg i got the same crap they told me lol that i me i was using my card as a credit card and this was thus illegal because its not a credit card even though it says visa well i didnt even know you could use it as a credit card because i thought it was an atm card and always used it as an atm card these people steal and are crap they jump around and dont ever solve the problem they caused
I don't like to be Darwinian, but why is it that i don't get overdraft fees? I mean I know they order transactions largest to smallest. I sure as hell would want my rent/morgage paid before my car payment, before my bar tab, etc. and i know every transaction I do that posts at an overdrawn balance costs me $35 dollars, so I make sure never to get low enough where it comes down to $25 let alone 25 cents. cmon people. some god damn accountabilty.
I just got 4 $35 charges... for no reason by B and A. I can't do anything till the Pending charges go through. They hit you with that 5 days to pay, even so i have a business day to put money into the account. they claim to be a real time bank and I had money in the account by 6 a.m this morning. No charges were made, then I came back from work and got hit with the 140 dollars. I feel scammed and now I'm in negative again. So now again i will get an additional 140 taken out again.
I suppose that you are able to live beyond check-to-check, unlike many of us. What BofA does is complex to explain in 500 wds. Suffice it to say, Jedi-bar-tab, that accountability does not enter into it, it is their practices that make certain transactions over draw you a few cents so that everything else adds the fees before your pay-check clears. Transactions that are in chronological order one day change the next.
You're beautiful!!! Screw BoA!!!! Google Chris Dodd's Overdraft Protection legislation. BoA is scared of this legislation and so they are trying to act like they care all of a sudden. Don't buy the B.S. Call Senator Dodd's office and show your support for his bill. (202) 224-2823
Take them to small claims court everyone for the amount they charged you in Finance charges, Annual fees and NSF fees. The filing costs are usually less than 50 bucks. Once you file your bank is notified of pending suit and will call you to settle. Its cheaper for them the settle out of court then send attorneys to represent the bank in Small Claims Court. Trust me this works! Also, be sure to ask for filing fee (Small Claims Court filing fee) to recoup your costs.
BofA and a few other banks have changed their policies so that people can opt out of overdraft protection. They also put a cap of four OD fees per day but that's still $140 a day.
If your husband's future assignments put you two some distance away from each other, you might consider separate checking accounts at your new credit union. My wife and I do this and we don't have to keep track of each others' spending when balancing our accounts. Best of luck to you.
I just got MyGreenDot as a bank substitute and wrote an article on HubPages about it. I went through all sorts of ridiculous chain reactions because my bank wasn't good enough to get the funds available when I needed them online. I posted your video on my article, it's a perfect example of the nonsense old-school banking put people through. Thanks for documenting the predatory practices some banks use!
also something else they wont tell you is "overdraft protection" will charge you 25$ everytime they transfer money from the savings to checking. therefore just another hidden overdraft fee. dont let banks take advantage of you like this.. its completely ridiculous. threaten to take them to small claims court...that is what ron paul recommends and theres another video on youtube of someone who did that and it works.
I think I may call them back and start up another nonsense discussion questioning their so called "receipts" and ask about their "overdraft protection" fee you mentioned. I'll be sure to post that video as well!
by receipts I assume you mean "sales draft" and by labeling it "so called" I assume you know jack shit about what happens between a merchant and bank. At the end of the day you spent more money than you had and got overdraft fees. I needed to get in here and voice this on a one sided post like this so you people relize not all consumers think like you and seek to blame others.
yes, you're right, my husband DID end up spending more money than there was in the bank account, but like I stated in my video, I'm aware of it. I'm aware of "sales drafts", and what people realize, is that they are being screwed over, just like I was.
