@michaelpece it was not FAKE. I saw this on a History Channel story of a rescue. The helicopter that was sent to evacuate some injured hunters while on duty. They boarded the injured and the helicopter took off . But because of extreame cold, high altitude and over weight conditions it could not generate enough lift.

@Wahlnutz This is not an Mi-28. The Mi-28 is an attack helicopter. This is an Mi-8MTV or an Mi-17 (troop/cargo transport). The Mi-8MTV and the Mi-17 are essentially the same thing. If it were an Mi-8MT, the tail rotor would be on the right side instead of the left.

I saw this on a Documentary years ago, sadly, my memory has left me, I do remember however that there was a patient in that chopper, which made the incident more terrifying to the people on the ground who knew the situation... imagine putting your mother/father/relative in an emergency helicopter, and watching it crash on take off? not a good day.

That was their first load of people... i think everyone survived and it was NOT the pilot's fault... There were too many damn people in the helicopter and it couldn't produce lift... They need to realize how many people is too many...

@RJSarratt That would be the pilot's fault. If you are the pilot, you are in charge of how much weight you lift. You should always know your max gross weight, and plan accordingly. The density altitude was very high and he should have figured that into his planning. That would make it the pilot's fault. Plain and simple.

he was able to hover above ground just fine when he took off, which means he was not overloaded. he gained some speed he lost alttitude and you can barely see it but just before the heli started to spin his tail rotor hit the hill and kicked up snow which resulted in LTE and once that happens you need to do a hovering autoroation, but terrain is uneven and there's no flat surface set down, that's why it crashed.

i am a student helicopter pilot and i think i have some insight into why this helo crashed. notice the wind direction in the beginning of the video, there's a red windsock looking thing on top of the hill. helicopter had a strong right crosswind which would require even more left pedal pressure during take off. left pedal pressure reduces the engine power for the main rotor and you loose alttitude.

I'll bet my last paycheck this aircraft was too heavy for the density altitude. Any chopper pilot watching this video should agree. This has little to do with pilotage and more to do with aeronautical decision making. Rescues are often performed right on the limit of aircraft capabilities, thats why many of these accidents happen. Choppers perform the most hazardous missions on a regular basis. This is a high altitude extraction attempt.

This aircraft was overloaded for the density altitude. After initial liftoff, it settled with power into rising terrain. Very important to keep aircraft within operating limits, otherwise this can be the result.
