The church is supposed to be the primary charity. If granny needs money for her prescriptions, the church should be able to help. If someone needs shelter, the church should be able to help. Church has bills too, how are they supposed to feed the hungry, house the homeless, & help the hurting? It's true some churches misuse money but not all. I'm a preacher & I work 40 hours a week to earn my own money and all offering goes to pay church bills and hos events geared towards helping the community.
Thanks for commenting!! Like I mentioned I'm ok with it going to a cause (helping the hungry, etc.) As for the bills, churches are a business in my opinion and should sell goods/services. Especially the larger, more theatrical churches that is built on donations not of its own money I find horribly wrong. When a church is asking for tithes and does not mention a charitable reason it shouldn't be asking for money. Thank you very much for your input!! I'm very appreciative!!!
I remember a line from a U2 concert - waaay back in the 80s (think the song was 'Silver and Gold') where Bono said "The God I believe in isn't short of cash, mister." Who knows, maybe Rock 'n Roll really will save the world. Not. LOL
Even Jesus warned the religious leaders of his day, "You can't serve both God and money..."
When I'm a missionary, I live on an average of 4,000-7,000 a year. And, yes, that's funds I'm supposed to raise myself. Not everyone who works for a religious non-profit organization is in it for the money. I'm taking a year off and working a "real job," where I will make twice what I normally make. LOL
But you should give wisely and choosily (real word?).
Thats very cool! Their are many missionary groups that help out around the world (Africa, 3rd world countries, and disasters for example.) Most do really good work building houses, helping distribute food, etc. i just have a problem with the groups not raising the money (even classic car wash would make sense to pay the bills of the church.) If a church is just collecting free money I think that it should go to a cause not the pocket of the church leaders.
I have to agree with Twiggie... If you are going to give money to your church or any organization, even if you can only afford to give your spare change, it should only be used to help others in need. Not just bibles and prayers but help with food, clothing and shelter. I went to a rather small church growing up. The money from the offering plate went to local charities or even families within the church if they were in need. To make an income, my pastor was a marriage counselor during the week.
The money donated to religious groups for disasters often goes toward BULLSHIT things, for example during the Haiti disaster faith healers and solar powered bibles were sent!
Yeah, I think that if you are going to send something to a group of people in need, send them stuff they NEED!! Bibles are not food, water, housing, etc. Sure if you want to spread your ideology of your religion to others thats fine. In the same token don't try to spread it cause the people you are talking to are down and out, instead of giving them a helping hand.
The same way, most people aren't extreme enough to fallow all the other rules of the religion. The bible has many rules that aren't fallowed or enforced by the leaders (like eating animals with hoove feet. Which include Deer, Goats, Sheep, sheep, etc.) I strongly believe that churches are looked at more like businesses by its leaders in a way to get money, which if they were more focused on the religion then they don't need to spend money on a huge stage/decoration. instead focus on the word.
For me personally i don't consider myself a christian. Though, personally i think that if you give money the money should be turned around to help people. Not in the pocket of the leaders. Just like many others I disregard a decent amount of the bible, though I do agree with most of the teachings of Ecclesiastes. That all things/feelings temporary. But i agree with it in a idea more then a complete religious sense.

The gospel of Jesus is not a commodity to be bought or sold, neither should any clergy eat meat by it; nor should any clergy be in control of you.

Well, how can you believe and follow a religion and not follow the rules? The bible says very clearly to give money to the church.

How do you justify what to follow and what not to?
