In the '60s a Folk Trio named the Kingston Trio had a hit song named "The Reverend Mr. Black." They used the first verse of this song for their lyrics. "You've got to walk this valley by yourself. Nobody can walk it for you."
Sparks the preacher man in the 1943 movie The Oxbow Incident sang this old gospel song immediately after the posse lynched the innocent cowhands it sounded best sung by him...it had real meaning in that movie,that was way before the Carter family...this song is an old negro spiritual I believe before the 20th century but I'm not sure.I'm searching for the original sheet music I'm guessing it was a-capela
@mommierene Hello, realised you left this comment a long time ago, but the original singer is Mississippi John Hurt, and my god his version had a lot of soul in his voice, as he played it in his few remaining years
