actually in the novel, denker's mother died from stomach ailments, implying that bessie poisoned her. her father died in an accident involving a threshing machine. her sister fell down the well. her little brother died when bessie spread arsenic on his toast mistaking it for sugar and her grandpa was shot mysteriously while napping on the porch.
