one thing i know now for sure,,these wonderful people are my proof of God's great grace,,,how infinitely privliged we are, fussin around with all these wars and such foolishness
I was blesses to hear them play with Ravi Shankar, and Pharoah Sanders at a John Coltrane memorial concert at UCLA's Royce Hall in the early '90s. Fantastic!
Thank you for posting this. I was lucky enough to attend this concert, which unfortunately was Alice Coltrane's final concert. If someone has a decent recording of the concert, please release it, since it was a magical night . I will never forget when Ravi introduced the band before the break, and when he got to Alice, he said "the most influential person in my life, my mother, Alice Coltrane" The crowd at the Masonic Temple instantly stood and roared. We all were in tears.
The fact that he does not simply emulate his father is a testament to his musicianship, let alone his understanding of his father's music.
Ravi has his own sound, a lovely tone, and a releaxed rhythmic conception.
He is still growing, like most of us, but he has accomplished a lot, and I find the dimissive comments willfully petty and trite and uninformed about the process of becoming a creative musician.
@chipstern Michael Tsarion is the worlds premier conspiracy reseracher/lecturer/author. Leo Zagami, Jordan Maxwell and Alexandre Dumas pere are highly informative as well. p.s. Melting Euphoria is similar to Ozric Tentacles and Gong.
Was lucky beyond belief to get free tickets to this show....
The only word to describe the effect it had on us is 'transformative'
On the way home from the show, we turned on the radio and quickly turned it off... it all sounded dull and ordinary compared to what we just experienced. In fact, we did not listen to any other music for a few days after.
@MINMICHELE67 Great holistic bands are---Melting Euphoria, Ozric Tentacles, Gong, Mother Gong, Acid Mother's Gong, Magma, Aphrodities Child, Jade Warrior, Steve Tibbetts, Patrick Bernard, Lost at Last, Larry Coryell, Shakti, Oregon, Kazumi Watanabe, Toninho Horta, Egberto Gismonti, Eat Static, System 7, Lisa Gerrard, Dead Can Dance, Magma, Sphongle, Bill Laswell, Stomu Yamashta, Here and Now band, Steve Hillage.
I saw Rhames in Willasau Switzerland in 1981 with Rashid Ali and it was the high point of a 4 day jazz festival. He was truly amazing for his young age. Too bad he died so young
hey man, it's not about playing a tune JUST LIKE your pop. it's about expounding yourself in it. Ravi does well to find his own path and sound despite having John Coltrane for a father. I'd like to see you touch people the way that he obviously has in a live setting.
It really pisses me that ppl cheer through the introduction to "A Love Supreme"! Uncouth idiots! No manners! No home training and ignorant to the fact they they are uncultured! Give them credit for even being present tho! They could have been at a 50cent concert!
You are an oaf! You have not been raised and properly educated. You cheer at the end of a piece of music, not during it's performance. Anyone trained in etiquette knows this. This was not a Van Halen concert imbecile! When someone plays Coltrane ppl want to hear the subtly of the music, not a bunch of morons cheering!

Great music. Beautiful family. Great beliefs and spiritual passion. A belief so deep that many people may not fully understand at first glance.
:) peace

Word. Talk to Flying Lotus, Alice's great-nephew, and hear him expound on the mystical properties of green tea, for example. Peace.

Arthur Rhames was the true heir to the throne, not Ravi. Sorry.

(n)osensei...you little puppet...excitement is a gift from God too. You seem to be too aloof to have any connection with God. Home training...prick.

How do you replace a Coltrane, lest one be sent by God? People of her stature are born of spirit. No earthy process can produce one such as she was.
osensei2987 4 years ago
Yeah. And maybe it's just natural talen, lots and lots of practice, and a bit of good fortune.

Maybe this was after a solo, or they transitioned from a different piece.
