hey guys i am my self power station mechanical technician and i am facing really big problem, the thing is , my boss which is mechanical engineer is a really corrupted ignorant guy who always look down at us technician's, we work in small power station and hes responsible about our salary and benefits, so i mean he dont give us what we deserve, he still wont give us danger allownace+home allownce+ transporter allownace, we re suffering and our voices is not heard any solutions :( ?

I've heard that in order to become an avionics technicians you need to have prior knowledge of electronics, chemistry, physics, and math? is this truth or the are those subjects taught along the way with this career?

@GODsoccersk8football Those are the Pre-Requirements you need in order to take the program. Thats what im doing. Im just going school for basically all the subjects you named, and once im done i start the avionics program

man o man these young bucks, if you think you like the career you're in ,by all means accomplish your dream as a a&p/structures mechanic, its really sucks for me, starting pay to even doing the everyday job, this is my 3rd year and it still sucks and im not even in a union, i thought it would be a ''great career'' but i was wrong, contracters make better money than me and ''most'' of them are not well experience, o yea $24/hour starting?? keep wishing on that shooting star guy

There are tens of thousands of laid off mechanics and pilots...and when the post holiday slump hits there are going to be hundreds more added to the lay-off list. Only a fool would get involved in an aviation career now days. Sorry to say it, but that's the unvarnished truth. I've been in it for 30 years. 911 had nothing whatsoever to do with the ongoing attack on aircraft mechanics. bush getting elected is what killed our trade...and many others. bush said that outsourcing was good for America, and CEOs took him at his word and did just that. You're right, RPMs are going up. The future of aviation is bright, but well paid union mechanics aren't included in that future. We have been cut OUT of the American dream...period.

Jetmechma re: 1- Im glad that I live in Canada and its stable, at least more then what your saying about the eco in America 2- yes Im younger and Ive been making good money in AME and I spent it on the nice car that I now have, here on in Im saving for a house and plan to have no pension and be living in a nice house by the time Im in my 30s late 40s...we make good money, even people like me that dont have 10 yrs experience, and because you had bad experiences doesnt mean everyone is the same.

I never said everyone is doing bad as a mechanic...but MOST aircraft mechanics are under attack. That's a fact. There are a VERY few mechanics at Southwest, UPS and FedEx who make $45 an hour...but the VAST majority of man-hours worked on those planes is done by low paid non-union scabs at outside vendors. For everyone else there is a downward pressure on good union wages and that is getting worse, not better.

You should LIVE at work. Work all the overtime you possibly can while you are young and able. Make all the money you can before it goes out of style. My friend worked all the overtime he could, and he paid cash for his house. Now he is bullet-proof. I highly recommend that to every young person. Make as much money as you can as soon as you can, pay cash for your house and then life is down hill from there. Then you own it and no one can take it away from you. Unless from your cold dead hands.

Jmartin is an A&P school dumb ass .For 20 years I have worked with everything from J-3's to F-18's. I hold an A&P and I.A. , single and multi engine instrument ratings. So who should you listen to ?Someone who has 20 years in aviation or someone who is in A&P school. This morning I saw a whole crew walking the line looking for FOD because they didn't have any work. Opening someone's chest pays well. They can only kill one person at a time, One mistake and we can kill hundreds at one time.!!

The hours are the same as anyone elses job, but the pay is low for the responsibility you sign your life away for....unless you are a union busting scab. Scabs will accept any pay...because they are self loathing scabs. They stab their fellow mechanics in the back and lower the standards of our trade. As an A&P mechanic, you sign legal maintenance documents that are kept forever. If anything happens they are going to try to pin it on YOU, the mechanic because you are the scapegoat.

Most A&P mechanics have had their wages drastically cut. This is the year 2009 not 1989. Our wages should reflect that, but they don't. We made advances in standard of living, only to have them stolen from us by criminal corporations who violated the contracts we had signed with them.
