Soldiers are screwed if they have a bad leader, like a platoon/squad/company/division leader blah blah blah because if their leader tells them to shoot the civilians, they get court marshaled by even higher authorities but if you DON'T shoot them, you get court martialed for not following orders. And over there it's very hard to avoid killing civilians when who we're fighting are just civilians with guns, it's hard to avoid it, but that's war against terrorism, not WW2.

But I would think that before a recruit enlists in the Corps, he does so thinking of protecting his family and his country, those Corps values still havn't even been presented to future Marines. Every branch in the US military gives the same oath (If I'm not mistaken) to recruits to make sure they place country/duty above all. Though brotherhood seems equally important.

If Marines, and any other U.S. military, do not follow rules of engagement set forth by the U.N., then they are no better then a terrorist. But what makes the U.S. military different from a terrorist is that they do (or suppose to) follow certain laws minimizing innocent civilians deaths.

When I talked about the "oomph", I was trying to clarify that I wasn't talking about the seats in the House and Senate and their power. I have large problems with bills that aren't fully read.. Like the PATRIOT Act--a bill passed so quickly that nothing past the first few clauses was ever read. The Healthcare Reform Bill was flawed, but it still was stronger than the previous system.

Soldiers are screwed if they have a bad leader, like a platoon/squad/company/division leader blah blah blah because if their leader tells them to shoot the civilians, they get court marshaled by even higher authorities but if you DON'T shoot them, you get court martialed for not following orders. And over there it's very hard to avoid killing civilians when who we're fighting are just civilians with guns, it's hard to avoid it, but that's war against terrorism, not WW2.

But I would think that before a recruit enlists in the Corps, he does so thinking of protecting his family and his country, those Corps values still havn't even been presented to future Marines. Every branch in the US military gives the same oath (If I'm not mistaken) to recruits to make sure they place country/duty above all. Though brotherhood seems equally important.

If Marines, and any other U.S. military, do not follow rules of engagement set forth by the U.N., then they are no better then a terrorist. But what makes the U.S. military different from a terrorist is that they do (or suppose to) follow certain laws minimizing innocent civilians deaths.

I agree that the marines deserve a fair trial. And Yes! Murtha should not say it is a fact that those marines are murderers. But to make the determination that Murtha is a piece of shit, after all the things he personally did for this country, is crap. Most of us weren't even alive when he was running through the jungle in Vietnam.

The whole excuse of saying, "well, those marines were scared, and fatigue." is not an excuse to kill. I can understand there feelings of being paranoid. But the officers in charge should have done a better job of calming that down.

Murtha is not a piece of shit. He is a 37 year veteran (Colonel) of the Marine Corp. A Vietnam era marine at that. I'm a former marine myself, and know that it is a real possibility that those marines murdered those Iraqis.
