This is very valuable advice. ALL the different vibrato techniques are well worth learning. The slide vibrato is better done with the wrist as the "hinge" point. Otherwise, if too much ARM IS USED, then the whole horn is shaking. We want to keep the horn movement down to as little as possible (within reason. . .). So watch Bill Watrous on a ballad, as an example of someone primarily doing wrist based slide vibrato.
Thank You, very helpful! One of my Jazz teachers told me when he was watching me perform one of my solos, he noticed the way I was trying to slide vibrato was ending up looking like I was shaking the trombone, using my forearm instead of my wrist. This lip vibrato technique feels much more comfortable for me.
On the New Years' Eve 2008 concert by the New York Philharmonic, they played Ravel's Bolero...the principal trombonist used slide vibrato, pretty well actually.
