I heard the Cheap Trick version before this one (Via 70's show) and thought it was a great song, but once I heard this version the Cheap Trick version seemed way too.. like "Hey let's take take this sweet song, instead of three guitars we'll use one with distortion." They took the arty intricacy out of it. Anyone could have made that cover, but only Big Star could have written it the way they did.
cheap trick really had a knack for fucking with greatness, really hate that band. oh, and outside of tommy chong, that 70s show was awful. death to ashton kutcher, i will smash his camera.
my friend introduced me to this bad and when i heard this i thought it sounded familiar. Then i realized it was the theme song for that 70s who. I was a little mad when i found out that payed Alex Chilton 70 dollars for the use of this song, then used cheap trick's inferior cover. thats some bullshit.
@MjXllcommando 70 bucks is Chilton's residual as the song's composer. He didn't get paid 70 dollars once, he got 70 dollars every time the show aired, anywhere, in any market, syndication, reruns, etc. If the show's reruns ran five days a week in one market, that's 350 bucks a week. And that's just in one market. Chilton himself jokingly referred to the show as "That 70-Dollar Show". Not a bad little profit on a tune written 30 years earlier.
@Salguine but why not use the original? big star's SOUND is a time capsule to the 1970's, not their songs. it'd have been just overall more authentic than to have cheap trick (a band that was about half Big Stars inferior in their peek, not to mention the 90s) do a Matchbox 20 version of this classic.
This song, to me, represents the beauty just being with someone for a while...like your friends or your girlfriend..and just spending some time together in this flicker of existence that we're all sharing right now.
the cheap trick version is decent, but I don't understand why they made it. It would have made more sense if a new band remade big star, but instead it's a band from the 70's covering...a band from the 70's. Now, most people think cheap trick wrote the song originally (even though a simple online search would prove them wrong.) If the show's producers wanted Cheap Trick on the show so badly, why didn't they just use a Cheap Trick song?
OK I think there was something very innovative going on with Alex Chilton. But I still can't find a great song he wrote except for Thirteen and September. So if anyone can recommend another great song or one that sounds like Thirteen . Thanks.
@11xzxzxz What? Have you listened to the first three Big Star albums or not? Chilton wrote dozens of great songs, not just two. Stroke It Noel? Ballad of El Goodo, What's Going Ahn? Thank You Friends? Blue Moon?
@decorativeedison Well I haven't bought them but I may have heard them. Anyway I was just hoping to hear what the good songs could me. I will listen to those.. Thanks. And scold you ha if you are wrong.
@alcarr99 "September Gurls" should have been a Top 10 single back then. How could ANYONE have heard that song and not played it for everyone they knew?!

Where's the version with distortion (70's show version)?
DanManThePurple 7 months ago
@DanManThePurple That was done by a different band called Cheap Trick who made a cover of this band's song for that show in the late 90s.

Big Star was way under-rated. This whole album of theirs kicks some serious ass.

It sure is hard to believe that Big Star didn't have
a hit or two from "#1 Record" or "Radio City". I have
a stand at my local swap meet, selling cds and dvds.
Sometimes, when I engage a customer in conver-
sation about music, I ask if they have heard of Big Star.
It's always a no. They are the best rock band that no one
has ever heard of. I love the jangle-pop, power- pop sound.
They were early masters of that sound, if not the inventors.
