Because I remember at the peak of the war Israeli troops halted their advance for a little over a day and there was no explanation for it, this allowed Israel sufficient time to regroup and get reinforcements up to the Golan which led to the eventual capture of the Golan. Ending conflict with as few casualties as possible is the best way to go. The bombs did exactly just that in the Pacific front. Either kill 500,000 people, or lose millions on both sides.
I knew the figure would be a tad bit lower than 500,000. But some people round up too much and I'd might as well put it in a way that they won't have to be "confused".

Its possible Israel knew the bomb was down in the desert but had no idea where it was. Rather than draw attention to its existence by searching a hotly contested border area. There are some serious difference between the movie and the novel by Tom Clancy. Firstly, the pilots and groundcrews didnt know it was a nuke and thought it was a fuel tank. Second, there were 4 aircraft on patrol, not one. Third, they did get into some action and destoroyed the sam site with 1 survivor. That surviving aircraft was badly damagd and crashed eventually with the pilot and the bomb flew into a farm. Fourth, the pilot was an 18 year old unmarried.

@zipacna1980 Not all that dumb. It wasn't for a patrol mission. The idea was that the Israelis had a secret emergancy plan to nuke Jordan if it looked like they were on the verge of victory.
In the book its a bit more detailed, the fighter-bombers get recalled and reloaded for a close support mission. But due to an ordinance handling accident the nuke isn't removed from one of the aircraft. It gets shot down attacking a Jordanian SAM unit and the bomb ends up buried in the desert.

The plane's shot down and buried for 30 years.

Its possible Israel knew the bomb was down in the desert but had no idea where it was. Rather than draw attention to its existence by searching a hotly contested border area. There are some serious difference between the movie and the novel by Tom Clancy. Firstly, the pilots and groundcrews didnt know it was a nuke and thought it was a fuel tank. Second, there were 4 aircraft on patrol, not one. Third, they did get into some action and destoroyed the sam site with 1 survivor. That surviving aircraft was badly damagd and crashed eventually with the pilot and the bomb flew into a farm. Fourth, the pilot was an 18 year old unmarried.

@zipacna1980 Not all that dumb. It wasn't for a patrol mission. The idea was that the Israelis had a secret emergancy plan to nuke Jordan if it looked like they were on the verge of victory.
In the book its a bit more detailed, the fighter-bombers get recalled and reloaded for a close support mission. But due to an ordinance handling accident the nuke isn't removed from one of the aircraft. It gets shot down attacking a Jordanian SAM unit and the bomb ends up buried in the desert.

@zipacna1980 Well its not acually a patrol mission its job was to fly close to Cairo then if the Isralie ground forces where destroyed and it was given the green light it would be sent to launch a nuclear strike on Cairo but as it is in the air and not doing anything technicaly it is classed as a patrol mission.

The Syrians however, as history has told, have never been a friend ot us. So one theory is we told Israel to take out Damascus in a final effort against them if necessary.

@zipacna1980 The book explains it better. The plane and four like it were armed for a deterrence mission before the Israelis were sure they could hold. The bombs were to be stripped off and the planes sent off to go hunt tanks, but due to a mix up and plane crash one bomb was left on and the new flight crew guys thought it was a radar pod and left it. The plane's shot down and buried for 30 years.

The United States have lost at least 6 Nuclear weapons since 1950 including an A-4 Skyhawk (bomb & pilot) lost over the side of the USS Ticonderoga near Japan in 1965. They only acknowledged this in 1981. So as you can see not such a absolute dumb scenario. In Israel 1973 it is indeed a good scenario. If you have only 1 bomb you want to move it the whole time so the enemy cannot find it.

@zipacna1980 The first time I watched this movie and saw the beginning I was like, WTF? Why is that guy flying on a patrol mission with a live nuke? But as it is written at the beginning of the movie, the Israeli's were thinking that their ground forces would be overrun in a short period and they would not have enough soldiers to fight that war, so in case if that happened they were getting ready to Nuke the capital of Egypt or Syria. I guess well never know :))))
