oh, dude my car did the EXACT same thing. its either oxygen sensor, or some other throttle sensor. it isnt a vacuum leak. is that a 96 Z24? looks like it

First of all take off the annoying ass pipe and check your computer or ignition system man? The ignition timing can get knocked off sometimes if the computer gets a shortor something.???
not that anyone seems to read my comments, but the car is and has been running fine for the past year and a half since i replaced the engine harness. i never did find out exactly what the problem was, but its all better now. engine is still as peppy as ever and, since its a drop top, im still using it as a DD and have put probably 20k or more on it since this was originally posted. w00t!
@bjk031 question for you. my cav is having the same exact problem. when you say engine harness, what exactly do you mean? i tried googling it and didn't find a part simply called engine harness
blown HG? stay away from disposable cars. sunfires, cavs, cobalts, g5's, grand am's etc... basically any GM "economy" car. they're good for a while but they're cheap for a reason, you'll end up spending more to fix them later on. like i'm not talking shit i like most of those cars but they aren't very reliable. and the resale value sucks.
This happened a couple days before 3 modules went out. That was...quite expensive, but I see you said it is fixed now. Glad you found the problem before anything expensive happened
its not a fuel injection problem check you aic (air idle control) and your throttle cant be stuck they are not to bright cause it would just sit at a certain idle thats all i can think of and check for vaccum leaks around your intake and good luck
i have a 97 cavalier z24 and had the sam exact problem i looked for answers and didnt find non so i took it in for a fuel injection tune uo and it solved it so try that its only 69.99
i dont care much for the 2.4 but the 2.2L is a damn fine little power plant. they run forever. i have 140K+ on a 91 2.2 and 104K on a 98 2.2 they both run great.
admittedly the older 2.2/2200s will run forever, but calling them a "power" plant is funny IMO. those things are dogs. now the 2.2 ecos, on the other hand......
@bjk031 umm beg to differ im running a Cavalier 2000 2.2 SFI OHV with Penzoil and Shell gas and can in Drive from 60 to 90 in about 2.5 seconds much faster than i used to when just using QT gas haha. And beats my friends Same Engine.
@ad356 idk much about 2.2s but i got almost 160 k on my 98 z24 2.4 and just starting to have a coolant leak not sure if its water pump or therm housing or what but this is the only problem ive had besides replacing a starter. ive heard horror stories about the 2.4 tho
if it does have a vacuum leak, get some propane and go around any kind of vaccum lines or the intake. Don't use carb spray because if there is an ignition leak it could start a fire. Also check the idle air control valve.
TPS i can almost garentee it. BTW your exaust sounds like shit

no it didnt. as i said in the replies, mine ended up being SOMEthing in the wiring, so i swapped in a full engine harness from a 97z.

I'll agree to that! My 2002 Cavvy 2.2 has never given me a lick of trouble in 63,000 miles but it can barely get out of its own way!

@bjk031 they are dogs but they sure do last. my 91 now has 172K on it. only replaced head gasket. it was a fairly cheap and easy job

@bjk031 yeah, theres not much power in the 2.2's but they do last forever it seems, i have a 94 2.2 with 343,000 miles.
