@DJSamLev Simplex means direct radio-to-radio use; repeaters are not used. 146.520 Mhz is recognized as the USA standard calling freq for 2 meter radio, however there are also other freq's. Any licensed amateur radio operator can use it. Hope this helps.
Im trying to set up a repeater with this radio and for some reason cant get my transmissions to go through. I set the PL tone, and odd split plus the output and input frequencies they have on there website. What could i be doing wrong?
@reefmaster ]hi, sorry. I've kinda been neglecting this channel. I'm not sure. It sounds like you did it right, but you might've missed one of those steps on accident. Could you put a video up showing me what you did?
@GilsonBrazil The audio is a little low, due to a piece of teflon tape on the inside over the mic for water protection. You can open the case and remove it and the audio will be good, or you can hold the mic closer to your mouth. It's your call. (I removed the tape on mine.)
@NFSfan38 Hey, my friend, I must thank you a lot for the information! Now I got the real point about its modulation. Thanks so much and sorry for horrible English...
Saw your demonstration page and it was somewhat helpful. I need to understand how to program in the frequency (which I now know thanks to your video) then what steps to program in the tone and transmit frequencies. You do mention some of this briefly in the video but not enough demonstrated for me to be able to get it right. Thanks.
hi can u pick up the ham satellites like ao51 with this one? I am still beginner and i am looking to buy something cheap for about 100-120 $. thank you in advance
@carlweathers818: You do NOT need a HAM license to operate the radio. You only need the license to operate on the HAM frequencies. If you have any other questions you can send me a PM..
in VFO mode, go to the feq you want. then set the pl tone, squelch, or other settings you want saved with that feq. then hold down the "F" key for a second. it'll beep and a number will start blinking on the top right. that's the memory number. you can change it up or down. press "F" again to save the memory.
Ah, that's actually fairly simple. I was using a local repeater. when I stopped transmitting, the radio picks up the end of the retransmission from the repeater.
If I was on simplex you wouldn't hear anything at the end. Hope that helps.
Im an animal rescue tech and i use the VX-170 and love it very much!
it is such a great radio! mine is modded of course. the HUGE thing i love about it is that when a speaker mic (i have an awesome aftermarket with an emergency key) is plugged into the radio you can still use the radios mic by using the radios PTT. just like an HT1000!
only issue i have with it is that the end of CTCSS RX it doesnt cut off silently.
i'm a voulnteer firefighter, coukd i use this for our fire and ems freqs. like the fire is 151.400 and the ems is 155.235, can this rido be used for that purpose
You would have to modify it. It won't broadcast outside of the ham band(144-148MHz).
IF you modify it, make sure it conforms to FCC rules for firefighters. IDK what they are, thats up to you. You'd be better off getting a radio that's made for that. Yaesu's parent company, Vertex Standard, does make radios for emergency personnel (including waterproof ones very much like this).
im a volunteer firefighter here in hawaii and we use 154.310 for fire and ems traffic. i modified mine and it works great. sometimes works better then the motorolas the departments uses. although it is illegal for ham radio operators to do it. since were firefighters and we are permited to use those frequencies and we would like to use a really good radio such as the VX-170 its fine. actually many of the paid firefighters have either the VX-150 or the VX-170. a few battalino chiefs have one
FYI...It is not Illeagal for Hams to MARS Cap (Modifiy) the Radio, We Can use any Freq. in time of an emergency even Police Freq. according to the FCC Rules Part 97.. It is Illeagal for a Fire Fighter Paid or Not to use the radio on thier Freq. .. Period. First you are not a Ham Operator, secondly the radio is Not FCC Type Accepted outside the Amatuer Bands. So you must use a Commercial Radio type accepted for your use.
Most Fire Fighters and Police that buy these radios, do so because of the Price and the user can Program them easily, but if you are going to stay LEAGAL Pay the price and the Programing fees for the Commercial Radios, they are better radios for your service also.
im also a ham operator. i pretty much just use the vx-170 for monitoring my fire frequencies. the battery doesnt hold its charge must so its pretty much a scanner. i have a motorola jt1000 and a mt2000, both of which i use for fire ops
do u think i can use this as a APRS tracker...i mean is opentracker or tinytrak3/4 compatible with this?
XXwikkiXX 3 months ago
@XXwikkiXX I use a TinyTrak3 with mine. I'm sure the TinyTrak4 or opentracker would work just fine too.

@kelster5312 hi, sorry. I've kinda been neglecting this channel.
First, make sure you're in VFO.
Go to the freq you want. hit "F" then "1 (SGTYP)". Select "TONE" and hit "F" again.
Then hit "F" then "2 (CODE)". Select the pl code in HZ. Hit "F" again & you should be done.
You can now save to memory. Hope this helps.

@kelster5312 Have you checked out my video response, "Re: Yaesu VX-170 Demonstration?" What specifically did you have in mind? I'd be glad to help.
