This interview is funny, but I'm pretty sure the interviewer was holding himself from either storming out of there or beating the crap out of two drunk punks.
Nick was (and still is) so effing sexy. Love this interview, they are both so not bothered by what's going on, Nick looks like an animal coming out of hibernation wothout the sunglasses on.....
This is a textbook example of how not to interview someone, or indeed carry a conversation with anyone. Asking what you think is a question via giving two somewhat opposing opinions that are really only your take on the world or a subject is textbook douchebaggery. Look out for this witless technique at any bar in the world.

@Shali2707 For the record, Blixa swears he's never done heroin (see documentary "Mein Leben") and actually looks pretty sharp. Nick, on the other hand, looks a little slooower. BTW, I saw Nick play an acoustic in-store set for this tour in San Francisco. What was amazing was how young he seemed at the time and the record store at Haight and Masonic was absolutely packed.
@surfistador I lived in SF from 85 - 90 and worked at Rough Trade (we distributed Halber Mensch stateside, and used to refer to Blixa as "the leather toothpick"). Hung out with a German woman who'd been hanging out with EN in Berlin. She said they were doing heroin, but that's just hearsay. Really doesn't matter to me one way or the other. Also, Nick and Blixa did an in-store performance at Reckless Records on Haight in Oct. 1986, and I was there. Perhaps there was another one two years before.
5:34 - I can't tell, but it looks like Nick notices Blixa's "fixed" hair at that point and cracks up. Hence "Do you want to try it?" and gesturing the comb toward him. Every time I see this I notice something new. Bad interviews can produce very funny outcomes...
Heroin is a hell of a drug. THIS IS CLASSIC. Wonder if Nick is going to buy these loaded interviews all up like Bowie did? Lou Reed, John Cale, Iggy Pop and Roxy Music are a hell of a drug.
Too right! It's the little details that add so much. I have yet to find another interview sequence that reveals so much - whether through background incidentals, not-so-subtle innuendo, stultifying questions, or the sheer unadulterated spectacle of a young 'n raw Nick and a ("he's the self-destructive one") babyfaced Blixa, on their first American tour together. Thanks to my dear friend Marianne for sharing it with me (and you).
I just can't wait until some clown on stage, or at least at some stage, explains to me life's mistayries. }This has got to be the funniest interview I have seen with Mr.Cave in it, and it's not even in California !{
"Ah, hey Nick. What's the secret of life man. Seriously. Right here in this interview could you sum it up for me in one breath? And Blixa. Could you tell me what the shape your turd was in when you dropped a douce this morning? Like seriously, explain in detail please. Was it long like an anaconda or more rabbit style?" Wow wow wowsers...
Why did the interviewer ask such dumbass questions? it's almost as bad as when that clubowner told Mr Cave that his sound system at the club (over which they had a dispute about it's volume) was "Good enough for Flock of Seagulls, why isn't it good enough for you?"
That interviewer sucks. He has his own biases, both personal and political, that colour everything he's asking these artists. Good show on Blixa & Nick's part in just laughing at that tool.
Christ. In almost all the interviews I've read or seen of Nick Cave in his early days he's a complete shit to the interviewer. But really, with questions as terrible as these, who can blame him? "Why did you leave Australia for England?" Blixa: "..." So. Fucking. Awkward.
this is the best footage of of Naughty Nick....love his media play...and blixa's obsession with his cool hair.....Jeez I'd wish I'd seen him in the birthday party...that mustve been awesome...shit Nick....if only a time machine couldve brought us together for a gig revival...
@PotatoManTada Search GoogleVideo. There's a pretty recent interview of him on there. He was doing a sort of experiment theatrical show, with just himself a microphone and some FX.
what does that even mean, that he was more punk? it's either who you are or something you put on. for most punk was totally just an attitude that people adopted to fit a social fad. look at nick cave today and he is nothing like he was here. what does that tell you? if anyone is actually 'punk' it is Iggy Pop.
Hahah yea, the car insurance salesman that sang sometimes and vomited into the audience and rolled around in glass on stage and whipped his dick out on stage and let it vibrate on speakers and possibly invented crowd surfing in the late 60s
Nick: "I don't know...I really think this conversation is becoming circular."
Interviewer: "Ok..uhm..kind of life's circular, dont you think, like birth and death"
That's one of my favs, always makes me laugh really loud, and then the one that follows: "uh..what's your conception of life, anyway" - and I'm done. Love it.
:D I know! Whenever I feel blue, I watch it and start laughing. It's the greatest comedy skit - pretend interview I've ever seen. It's hard to pick my favorite but the begining is close. I totally understand why Blixa felt it was more important to get on with his hairdo. BTW: I like IreneT1210's comment: Blixa's hairdo wins!
In case people haven't heard: Nick and Blixa will be in Hamburg together on Oct 17 reading Bunny Munro! Who's going? Not me :(((
ME!!! I am going - just bought a ticket !!! Iam so curious what they will do together - except reading. Its said, there will be music too... Oh hopefully they perform some songs together!!!!
I'm glad everyone's enjoying this upload. Try and watch part 2 if you can. Barry Adamson joins in and the three of them are great together. Lots of jokes - you have to listen closely.
