Sitting and watching a panda for hours is the same thing as sitting and watching the ocean for hours. It's not about the panda. I don't get it...what's the problem here? I mean, eight hours looking at the panda is probably going overboard, but what's so ridiculous about deriving joy from watching another creature? Honestly I don't see the harm in it. There are much worse things to be obsessed by than visiting the zoo and personally I can see getting attached to an animal like it was a relative or something. Some people think that makes you less of a person, but we're all animals. Who's to say love for humans necessarily needs to be greater than love for animals? And no I am not talking about sexual love of course, which isn't really love anyway, but rather lust.

But you missed my point. Its not just that its an animal, as having love for a pet I think is perfectly healthy, but rather that these people are showing far too much attachment to something that simply does not care if they're alive or dead.
Imagine the same situation with a human being. If these people showed the same emotion for, say, Will Smith or Bret Favre, they would be labeled obsessive fanatics in need of mental help, but because its a cute fuzzy animal, somehow its okay?

I think their attachment is wierd, but I recently lost my cat of 8 years.. and he died before me... I've also had to get rid of our dog and he has a new owner.

personally, i think ana and cenk are being dicks about this, and i can agree to some of what they say, but nevertheless, it still deosn't make them any less of a dick. there are many animal lovers out there, and for whatever personal life experience that they intertwine with that zoo and that panda could be very special to them. Other times, people form that connection with other things like celebrities, paintings, books, movies and maybe their own pets.
