the only amp like that is the brian may signature vox amp, but that sucks balls. bass/treble/mids aren't effects they're the eq for your tone and are essential for shaping your guitar tone. get a good tone with a good amp and then add effects from there. good amps (valve amps) generally dont have effects built in, a reverb at most. but if u really want just buy an amp and run all the eq at noon (half way) and then buy an eq pedal of some kind, but if the amps good, its much better to use that.

Well if you mean modern metal as in the stuff like slipknot etc then you have Korn to thank for that. Metallica were just a part of the trash scene and up until the black album they hadnt really pushed any boundaries at all. Sure they wrote good songs but so did Anthrax, Manowar(ha) and Exodus. The only thing they did was bring out a commercial metal album that sold bucket loads. I know what you mean about slayer, but honestly, check out south of heaven! After two listens you will be loving it
