Listeria has traveled to refridgerators and countertops throughout Canada from the infected meat at MapleLeaf. That infection is now in homes industries and institutions, on the very cutting boards of Canadians. MapleLeaf was unable to eradicate the bacterium and had to remove and replace all equipment. The same has not been done for homes hospitals and industry. Ontario and Canada now suffer from untenable levels of listeria in the common environment. Do you eat food in or from Canada?
I work at Maple Leaf Foods (Schneiders plant 321 Courtland Ave E Kitchener Ontario Canada) During the weekend of Jan31 and Feb1 two foremans were caught having sex in a sterilized dept during their shifts. John Aspen and Kelly deBarros have been suspended. When the syringe casing was found back in 2006 we received new training thanks to public knowledge of the incident. The Listeria outbreak was a direct result of behavior like this and a lack of concern for health and safety.
I boil all my hot-dogs before consuming them. Mmm.
Well, that was yesterday. I feel just fine: granted, it's not health food.. but..
Here I am, alive and well. I bought Maple Leaf hotdogs because they're currently cheaper. I'd also buy Beef during Mad Cow and chicken during Avian Flu.
Some people skydive, some people spelunk - I buy discounted meat products.
He contends his 23,000 employees live in a culture of food safety and have an unwavering commitment to keeping your food safe. I allege that is an outright false statement of fact, and I hold documentary proof of such. Maple Leaf does have a propensity for permitting their companies operations to perform with actionable negligence, all in the name of saving a buck, and in this case that buck was at a cost of human life.

To the person who claimed Mass Murder... You are careless and thoughtless, and very not well inforned to make a statement "mass murder people for a "reason" to a corporation who killed people due to carelessness? "
Do your research, look at the # of thousands of times in 2007 the FDA Canada received and inspected that plant. McCain... did and is doing the right thing.
Its not his fault, its the workers in the one establishment where the bacteria came from. Mcain doesn't work in the buildings. Its technically not his fault. He is beinblamed from ppl cuz he is the owner of Maple Leaf. I guess he should've been keeping a better eye open and made sure his plants were being maintained properly. I seen alot of the ppl that work at Maple Leaf and they are all mostly low lifes that cant get other jobs, I have seen the dirtiest, scum working there. Gross
to actually even be affected by listeria, and hence obtain listeriosis, you have to be very immunodeficient. The only people that are affect are: the old, the pregnant, and the people with a condition with renders there immune system to be weaker. Every single person has eaten listeria, in every single kitchen, listeria is there. It will always be there.
Look at PETA and ALF for doing this as an act of bio-terrorism. It is NOT beyond their capabilities and PETA has been stooping lower and lower with it's add campaigns. Remember Christmas 2006... same plant and syringes were found in packaged hams. Are the two incidents related? I don't know but I would be looking into it, if I was the CFIA. Like I said look at PETA and the ALF as possible suspects.
"On behalf of the 23,000 people of Maple Leaf Foods who live a culture of food safety, we offer deep and sincere sympathy to those who are ill, or who have lost loved ones."
FUCK YOU!!! INEXCUSABLE, UNFORGIVABLE! You have our health in your hand!! Mistake is not granted!! Hey MapleLeaf staff, get another job NOW!! FUCK BIG MEAL PRODUCER!!!
HEY ALL CONSUMER, GO TO BUY LOCALE PRODUCERS MEAL!!!BETTER THING YOU CAN DO!!
but well, it could have. i still done trust their brand, and even if i did, i wouldnt be able to buy it from a local grocery store. I havent seen the ham i usually eat for a while.
This is why pencil's have erasers. Everyone makes mistakes. He seems sincere about it. That, and I bet he had absolutely nothing to do with any of this. I imagine he was tucked away in his office. However, I do feel bad for the people who have lost loved ones.
i am so scared now, i dont even know what i can eat and i cant, but i can forget about eating at a restaurant for a while till it is going all better, i wont eat my school cafeteria food
i am a sanitation employee at MLCF Moncton. this outbreak is unfortunate. just to put the knowledge out there i will describe the sanitation process to words.
we begin by rinsing off wtih 5000psi water as close to 100% of the meat as possible. we then proceed to check ALL surfaces/cracks/crevices/hiding spots/walls for meat, rinsing as they are found.
we then proceed to apply a chemical called Diabec which removes any protein left after rinsing (includes and fat residue etc) and gives the equipent a nice shine (this is the first of 3 sanitizers). after this we use a chlorine based sanitizing foam called EnduroChlor and coat all surfaces (again all hiding spots) with a thick layer. we let this sit for approx 15 minutes. this foam also engorges any meat not visible prior to this step and allows for easy removal (this is pt 2 of sanitizing.rinse
If there was a "culture of food safety" this would never have happened. Maybe they should have had enough staff and quality control to prevent this from happening. I'm afraid for my family who ate these products-maybe this man should really apologize without the excuses - this has changed my outlook on feeding processed foods to my family. You can't live in a bubble but you certainly can't trust this man....given the public relations written babble he's spattering here
What attitude is that? Do you know this man? B/c he is successful means that he does not feel pain? that he does not make mistakes?
Please... the majority of people posting comments about this unfortunate situation know absolutely none of the facts and only part of the story. You're entitled to your opinion but I would not pass judgement on this man without meeting him.
The utmost sincerity was portrayed by this and the many, many media spots of the CEO gravely sorry from this tragedy. People who don't know the facts themselves as cy43 stated, make themselves look like idiots, who don't care and just attempt to ruin the apologies of those sincere. No one wanted this to happen, unfortunately it did.
ya because this is definetly the first company who's ever had to recall their products....
